Project description:Herein, via introducing eight methacryl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (Ma-POSS), we dramatically enhance the holographic performance of phenanthraquinone-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) (PQ/PMMA) photopolymer with excellent characteristics of high sensitivity, high diffraction efficiency, and neglectable volume shrinkage for holographic data storage, the photosensitivity, diffraction efficiency, and volume shrinkage reaching 1.47 cm/J, ∼75%, and ∼0.09%, respectively. Ma-POSS here dramatically enhances the photosensitivity ∼5.5 times, diffraction efficiency more than 50%, and suppressed the volume shrinkage over 4 times. Further analysis reveals that Ma-POSS obviously increased the molecular weight by grafting PMMA to be a star-shaped macromolecule. And the residual C═C of POSS-PMMA dramatically increased the photosensitivity. Moreover, the star-shaped POSS-PMMA acting as a plasticizer dramatically enhances the mechanical properties and so reduces the photoinduced volume shrinkage of PQ/PMMA. Finally, by the use of the POSS-PMMA/PQ in a collinear holography system, it appeared to be promising for a fast but low bit error rate in holographic information storage. The current study thence has not only successfully synthesized photopolymer materials with potential for highly sensitive holographic storage applications but also investigated the microphysical mechanism of the impact of Ma-POSS on the holographic properties of PQ/PMMA photopolymer and clarified the thermal- and photoreaction processes of the POSS-PMMA/PQ photopolymer.

Project description:In this review, we summarize research efforts to realize Na-based organic materials for novel battery chemistries. Na is a more abundant element than Li, thereby contributing to less costly materials with limited to no geopolitical constraints while organic electrode materials harvested from biomass resources provide the possibility of achieving renewable battery components with low environmental impact during processing and recycling. Together, this can form the basis for truly sustainable electrochemical energy storage. We explore the efforts made on electrode materials of organic salts, primarily carbonyl compounds but also Schiff bases, unsaturated compounds, nitroxides and polymers. Moreover, sodiated carbonaceous materials derived from biomasses and waste products are surveyed. As a conclusion to the review, some shortcomings of the currently investigated materials are highlighted together with the major limitations for future development in this field. Finally, routes to move forward in this direction are suggested.

Project description:Corner cube retroreflectors (CCRs) have applications in sensors, image processing, free space communication and wireless networks. The ability to construct low-loss wavelength filters embedded in CCRs can enable the development of wavelength multiplexing, tunable lasers and photonic integrated circuits. Here we created an ~10-?m-thick holographic corner cube retroreflector (HCCR) array that acted as a color-selective wavelength filter and diffracted light at broad angles. Angle-resolved spectral measurements showed that the Bragg peak of the diffracted light from the HCCR array could be tuned from 460 to 545?nm by varying the incident angle. The HCCR array also exhibited a wavelength-selective tuning capability based on the rotation angle in the visible spectrum. HCCRs projected holographic images with the rotational property in the far field. The utility of the HCCR was demonstrated as optical temperature and relative humidity sensors that produced a visible colorimetric response for rapid diagnostics.

Project description:Lignin-derived porous carbons have great potential for energy storage applications. However, their traditional synthesis requires highly corrosive activating agents in order to produce porous structures. In this work, an environmentally friendly and unique method has been developed for preparing lignin-based 3D spherical porous carbons (LSPCs). Dropwise injection of a lignin solution containing PVA sacrificial templates into liquid nitrogen produces tiny spheres that are lyophilized and carbonized to produce LSPCs. Most of the synthesized samples possess excellent specific surface areas (426.6-790.5 m2/g) along with hierarchical micro- and mesoporous morphologies. When tested in supercapacitor applications, LSPC-28 demonstrates a superior specific capacitance of 102.3 F/g at 0.5 A/g, excellent rate capability with 70.3% capacitance retention at 20 A/g, and a commendable energy density of 2.1 Wh/kg at 250 W/kg. These materials (LSPC-46) also show promising performance as an anode material in sodium-ion batteries with high reversible capacity (110 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1), high Coulombic efficiency, and excellent cycling stability. This novel and green technique is anticipated to facilitate the scalability of lignin-based porous carbons and open a range of research opportunities for energy storage applications.

Project description:Digital holographic cytometry (DHC) and other methods of quantitative phase imaging permit extended time-lapse imaging of mammalian cells in the absence of induced cellular toxicity. Manufactured DHC platforms equipped with semi-automated image acquisition, segmentation, and analysis software packages (or modules) for assessing cell behavior are now commercially available. When housed in mammalian cell incubators these cytometers offer the potential to monitor and quantify a range of cellular behaviors without disrupting routine culture. Realization of this potential requires validation against established standards. Two proprietary software modules for assessing cellular motility available using the HoloMonitor M4 DHC platform were evaluated on human melanoma cells lines with known relative motility and metastatic potential. One such software package, the Track Cells module, was run during routine culture. In addition, the Wound Healing module was conducted in parallel with established transwell migration and invasion assays. Each module was evaluated for reproducibility and correlation to established assays. Both software modules reliably recorded increased cellular motility in the metastatic 1205Lu line as compared with the non-metastatic WM793 line. In a direct comparison of the two propriety DHC software modules and two established transwell assays, the relative cell motilities were well correlated. The granularity of data provided by the Track Cells module permitted the additional identification of rare hyper-motile cells in the metastatic population and the distinction of motility from division associated displacement. The two HoloMonitor M4 DHC proprietary software modules for assessing cellular motility yielded reproducible results that were well-correlated with established standards. © 2018 International Society for Advancement of Cytometry.

Project description:pyDHM is an open-source Python library aimed at Digital Holographic Microscopy (DHM) applications. The pyDHM is a user-friendly library written in the robust programming language of Python that provides a set of numerical processing algorithms for reconstructing amplitude and phase images for a broad range of optical DHM configurations. The pyDHM implements phase-shifting approaches for in-line and slightly off-axis systems and enables phase compensation for telecentric and non-telecentric systems. In addition, pyDHM includes three propagation algorithms for numerical focusing complex amplitude distributions in DHM and digital holography (DH) setups. We have validated the library using numerical and experimental holograms.

Project description:Willow bark is a byproduct from forestry and is obtained at an industrial scale. We upcycled this byproduct in a two-step procedure into sustainable electrode materials for symmetrical supercapacitors using organic electrolytes. The procedure employed precarbonization followed by carbonization using different types of KOH activation protocols. The obtained electrode materials had a hierarchically organized pore structure and featured a high specific surface area (>2500 m2 g-1) and pore volume (up to 1.48 cm3 g-1). The assembled supercapacitors exhibited capacitances up to 147 F g-1 in organic electrolytes concomitant with excellent cycling performance over 10,000 cycles at 0.6 A g-1 using coin cells. The best materials exhibited a capacity retention of 75% when changing scan rates from 2 to 100 mV s-1.

Project description:Low-cost, rapid and accurate detection technologies are key requisites to cope with the growing global cancer challenges. The need is particularly pronounced in resource-limited settings where treatment opportunities are often missed due to the absence of timely diagnoses. We herein describe a Holographic Assessment of Lymphoma Tissue (HALT) system that adopts a smartphone as the basis for molecular cancer diagnostics. The system detects malignant lymphoma cells labeled with marker-specific microbeads that produce unique holographic signatures. Importantly, we optimized HALT to detect lymphomas in fine-needle aspirates from superficial lymph nodes, procedures that align with the minimally invasive biopsy needs of resource-constrained regions. We equipped the platform to directly address the practical needs of employing novel technologies for "real world" use. The HALT assay generated readouts in <1.5 h and demonstrated good agreement with standard cytology and surgical pathology.

Collagen and keratin make up a significant part of the animal origin protein waste, and the potential for their biotechnological application is almost inexhaustible. The specific fibrillar structure allows collagen and keratin to be in demand in bioengineering in various forms and formats, as a basis for obtaining hydrogels, nanoparticles and scaffolds for regenerative medicine and targeted drug delivery, films for the development of biodegradable packaging materials, etc. This review describes the variety of sustainable sources of collagen and keratin and the beneficial application multiformity of these proteins.

Project description:Anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions from power plants can be limited using postcombustion carbon dioxide capture by amine-based solvents. However, sustainable strategies for the simultaneous utilization and storage of carbon dioxide are limited. In this study, membrane distillation-crystallization is used to facilitate the controllable production of carbonate minerals directly from carbon dioxide-loaded amine solutions and waste materials such as fly ash residues and waste brines from desalination. To identify the most suitable conditions for carbon mineralization, we vary the membrane type, operating conditions, and system configuration. Feed solutions with 30 wt % monoethanolamine are loaded with 5-15% CO2 and heated to 40-50 °C before being dosed with 0.18 M Ca2+ and Mg2+. Membranes with lower surface energy and greater roughness are found to more rapidly promote mineralization due to up to 20% greater vapor flux. Lower operating temperature improves membrane wetting tolerance by 96.2% but simultaneously reduces crystal growth rate by 48.3%. Sweeping gas membrane distillation demonstrates a 71.6% reduction in the mineralization rate and a marginal improvement (37.5%) on membrane wetting tolerance. Mineral identity and growth characteristics are presented, and the analysis is extended to explore the potential improvements for carbon mineralization as well as the feasibility of future implementation.
