The pathogen Brucella abortus resides inside macrophages within a unique, replication-permissive organelle that is derived from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Although dependent on the Brucella type IV secretion system VirB, the mechanisms governing the biogenesis of this compartment remain elusive.
