ABSTRACT: The title compound [systematic name: (4bS)-4-hy-droxy-2-isopropyl-4b,8,8-trimethyl-4b,5,6,7,8,8a-hexa-hydro-phenanthrene-3,9-dione], C20H26O3, is an abietane-type diterpene, which was isolated from Taxodium ascendens (B.). In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by weak C-H?O hydrogen bonds, forming supra-molecular chains propagating along the [001] direction.

Project description:The title limonoid compound, C26H28O5·0.5H2O (TS3) [systematic name: (3aS,3bS,4aS,5aS,6S,7aR,8aR,8bS,11aR)-6-(furan-3-yl)-3a,5a,8b,11a-tetra-methyl-3a,4a,5,5a,6,7,7a,8b,11,11a-deca-hydro-oxireno[2',3':4b,5]oxireno[2'',3'':2',3']cyclo-penta-[1',2':7,8]phenanthro[10,1-bc]furan-3(3aH)-one hemihydrate], crystallizes with two independent mol-ecules (1 and 2) in the asymmetric unit and one water mol-ecule. TS3 is composed of three six-membered rings (A, C and D), three five-membered rings (B, E and F) and two epoxide rings. A group of five fused rings (A-E) is bonded to a furan ring (F) with a Csp3-Csp2 bond [1.500 (3) Å in mol-ecule 1 and 1.499 (3) Å in mol-ecule 2]. The absolute structures of the mol-ecules in the crystal were determined by resonant scattering; Flack parameter = 0.05 (5). In the crystal, the individual mol-ecules stack in columns along the b-axis direction. The water mol-ecule bridges mol-ecules 1 and 2 via Owater-H⋯O and C-H⋯Owater hydrogen bonds. Together with further C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, linking mol-ecules 1 and 2, the columns are linked to form slabs parallel to the ab plane. Within each column, mol-ecules are also linked via C-H⋯π inter-actions involving the five-membered furan (F) rings.

Project description:The title compound, C15H24O2 {systematic name: 1-[6-hy-droxy-7-(propan-2-yl)-4-methyl-idene-2,3,3a,4,5,6,7,7a-octa-hydro-1H-inden-1-yl]ethanone} was iso-la-ted from A. reticulata by column chromatography over silica gel by gradient solvent elution. The mol-ecule comprises a bi-cyclo-[4.3.0]nonane ring bearing acet-oxy, hy-droxy and isopropyl substituents, and an exocyclic double bond on the cyclo-hexane ring. In the bicyclic skeleton, the cyclo-hexane ring adopts a chair conformation ring and the cyclo-pentane ring is in an envelope conformation. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming chains along [010]. These chains are cross-linked by C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

The configuration of ochraceolide A was proposed based on analogue compounds which belong to the lupane type.

The compound crystallizes in the chiral space group P21, but it was not possible to determine the absolute structure of the mol-ecule in the crystal by resonant scattering. The mol-ecular structure is stabilized by two intra-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, enclosing S(5) and S(6) ring motifs. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by O-H⋯O and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming chains along the [010] direction. The crystal structure of the 10R stereoisomer of the title compound, isolated from the roots of Premna obtusifolia (Verbenaceae), has been reported. It crystallized in the chiral space group P212121, and the absolute structure was determined as (4bS,8aS,10R), by resonant scattering using Cu Kα radiation [Razak et al. (2010 ▸). Acta Cryst. Fortuitous structure determination of 'as-isolated' Escherichia coli bacterioferritin in a novel crystal form.

Project description:Escherichia coli bacterioferritin was serendipitously crystallized in a novel cubic crystal form and its structure could be determined to 2.5 A resolution despite a high degree of merohedral twinning. This is the first report of crystallographic data on 'as-isolated' E. coli bacterioferritin. The ferroxidase active site contains positive difference density consistent with two metal ions that had co-purified with the protein. X-ray fluorescence studies suggest that the metal composition is different from that of previous structures and is a mix of zinc and native iron ions. The ferroxidase-centre configuration displays a similar flexibility as previously noted for other bacterioferritins.

It is composed of an octa-hydro-naphthalene ring system substituted with an essentially planar benzodioxole ring system [r.m.s. deviation = 0.012 Å] and an extended iso-butyl-acryl-amide group. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming chains propagating along [100]. The chains are linked by pairs of C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, involving inversion-related benzodioxole ring systems, forming ribbons lying parallel to (010). There are also C-H⋯π inter-actions present within the ribbons.

Isolation, Characterization, Crystal Structure Elucidation, and Anticancer Study of Dimethyl Cardamonin, Isolated from Syzygium campanulatum Korth.

Project description:Syzygium campanulatum Korth is an equatorial, evergreen, aboriginal shrub of Malaysia. Conventionally it has been used as a stomachic. However, in the currently conducted study dimethyl cardamonin or 2',4'-dihydroxy-6'-methoxy-3',5'-dimethylchalcone (DMC) was isolated from S. campanulatum Korth, leaf extract. The structural characterization of DMC was carried out by making use of various techniques including UV, IR, NMR spectral followed by LC-MS, and X-ray crystallographic techniques. For determining the purity of compound, highly effective techniques including TLC, HPLC, and melting point were used. The cytotoxicity of DMC and three different extracts of S. campanulatum was evaluated against human colon cancer cell line (HT-29) by three different assays. DMC and ethanolic extract revealed potent and dose-dependent cytotoxic activity on the cancer cell line with IC50 12.6 and 90.1?µg/mL, respectively. Quite astonishingly to our knowledge, this is the very first report on S. campanulatum as being a rich source (3.5%) of DMC, X-ray crystallography, and anticancer activity on human colon cancer cells.

Crystal structure of BaMnB2O5 containing structurally isolated manganese oxide sheets.

Project description:In an attempt to search for mixed alkaline-earth and transition metal pyroborates, the title compound, barium manganese(II) pyroborate, has been synthesized by employing a flux method. The structure of BaMnB2O5 is composed of MnO5 square pyramids that form Mn2O8 dimers by edge-sharing and of pyroborate units ([B2O5]4-) that are composed of two corner-sharing trigonal-planar BO3 units. These building blocks share corners to form ?2[MnB2O5]2- layers extending parallel to (100). The Ba2+ cations reside in the gap between two manganese pyroborate slabs with a coordination number of nine. The title compound forms an inter-esting spiral framework propagating along the 21 screw axis. The structure is characterized by two alternating layers, which is relatively rare among known transition-metal-based pyroborate compounds.
