Anaesthesia in early childhood - is the development of the immature brain in danger?

ABSTRACT: Experimental studies performed on immature animal brains had demonstrated a neurotoxic effect following sedation and general anaesthetics administration. The same magnitude of neurotoxicity has been suggested but not been proven to neonates, infants and small children who have undergone anaesthesia. There is a justified and increasing inquiry regarding the administration of general anaesthesia to paediatric patients.
