Historically, multicellular bacterial communities, known as biofilms, have been thought to be held together solely by a self-produced extracellular matrix. Our study identified a novel mechanism maintaining <i>Bacillus subtilis</i> and <i>Mycobacterium smegmatis</i> biofilms-active production of calcite minerals.
