Project description:A large-scale entomological survey was carried out in summer 2016 in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It revealed, for the first time, the presence of the phlebotomine sand fly Phlebotomus (Transphlebotomus) mascittii Grassi, 1908 (Diptera: Phlebotominae) in south-western Slovakia. Species identification of a captured female was confirmed by both morphological and sequencing (COI) analyses.

Project description:Based on the known fossil record, the majority of crocodylians from the Cenozoic Era of Australia are referred to the extinct clade Mekosuchinae. The only extant crocodylians in Australia are two species of Crocodylus. Hence, the viewpoint that Crocodylus and mekosuchines have been the only crocodylians inhabiting Australia during the Cenozoic has remained largely undisputed. Herein we describe Australia's first tomistomine crocodylian, Gunggamarandu maunala gen. et sp. nov., thus challenging the notion of mekosuchine dominance during most of the Cenozoic. The holotype specimen of Gunggamarandu maunala derives from the Pliocene or Pleistocene of south-eastern Queensland, marking the southern-most global record for Tomistominae. Gunggamarandu maunala is known from a large, incomplete cranium that possesses a unique combination of features that distinguishes it from other crocodylians. Phylogenetic analyses place Gunggamarandu in a basal position within Tomistominae, specifically as a sister taxon to Dollosuchoides from the Eocene of Europe. These results hint at a potential ghost lineage between European and Australian tomistomines going back more than 50 million years. The cranial proportions of the Gunggamarandu maunala holotype specimen indicate it is the largest crocodyliform yet discovered from Australia.

Project description:BACKGROUND: Despite widespread use of electronic health records (EHRs), it is unclear whether residents possess the EHR skills to perform required tasks. OBJECTIVE: We assessed first-year residents' skills on specific EHR tasks. METHODS: Incoming residents were required to participate in EHR training before starting clinical rotations. The training team developed an assessment tool for 19 EHR tasks. Senior residents used a structured template to assess interns. RESULTS: For ambulatory workflow skills, most participants (range, 70%-100%) demonstrated competence. The 3 skills for which interns needed the most assistance were (1) creating and routing a result note (17 of 68, 25%), (2) deleting a medication or changing a dose in reconciling medications (10 of 68, 15%), and (3) finding results for the past 90 days (10 of 68, 15%). For inpatient workflow skills, most interns (range, 63%-100%) demonstrated competence. The 3 skills in which interns needed the most assistance were (1) placing a referral order at discharge (23 of 68, 34%), (2) finding a temperature on a flow sheet and trending it over time (14 of 68, 21%), and (3) creating a discharge summary, having it reviewed, and forwarding it to the primary care physician (14 of 68, 21%). CONCLUSIONS: Our results should help EHR training teams at other institutions to better understand the strengths and weakness of EHR training approaches and to target training on tasks with the greatest performance deficits as well as toward underperforming individuals or groups.

Project description:In previous surveys for the investigation of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus in Turkey, several Bursaphelenchus species, except B. xylophilus, were detected. To determine the insect vectors of these previously reported Bursaphelenchus species, trap trees of each pine species (Pinus brutia and P. nigra) were cut and kept in the field from April to September in 2011. Aphelenchoides stammeri was isolated from wood chip samples of P. nigra from Isparta (Sütçüler). A. stammeri was first identified by using morphological features and allometric criteria of females and males. In addition, molecular analysis using sequences of 18S and 28S ribosomal (rRNA) genes of A. stammeri was performed. Project description:A total of 30 different agricultural fields in the Golden Triangle Region of Montana, USA were surveyed, and 150 soil samples were evaluated for the presence of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs). The authors isolated EPNs from 10% of the collected samples. The recovered isolates were identified as Steinernema feltiae and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora by using morphological and molecular analysis. Steinernema feltiae was found from two fields, Kalispell (S. feltiae 1) and Choteau (S. feltiae 2). Steinernema feltiae (1 and 2) differed significantly from each other in terms of morphological characters for infective juveniles (distance from anterior end to excretory pore and nerve ring) and 1st generation males (body length, spicule length, gubernaculum length, oesophagus, tail, and anal body diameter). Steinernema feltiae 2 and H. bacteriophora were recovered from the same field in Choteau. Project description:RNA of Kyzylagach virus (KYZV), a Sindbis-like mosquito-borne alphavirus from Western equine encephalitis virus complex, was detected in four pools (out of 221 pools examined), encompassing 10,784 female Culex modestus mosquitoes collected at a fishpond in south Moravia, Czech Republic, with a minimum infection rate of 0.04%. This alphavirus was never detected in Central Europe before.

Project description:Three specimens of Stephanopachys quadricollis (Marseul, 1878) were recently found in Malta in UV light traps and represent the first record of this species for this country. Although Stephanopachys quadricollis is native to the Mediterranean basin, it is not yet clear if these Maltese records are due to a natural population or to an interception. Distributional, nomenclatural and biological data on this species are summarized, and a new synonymy is established: Stephanopachys quadricollis (Marseul, 1879) = Stephanopachys quadraticollis Kocher, 1956, syn. n.

Project description:BackgroundHuman Adenovirus species D (HAdV-D) was common human viral pathogen especially in eye infection, consists of several types of which HAdV-D8, -D19 and -D37 were common in eye infection. This study includes detection of HAdV-D types implicated in conjunctivitis based on L2 (Penton protein) gene similarity.MethodsConjunctival swabs were collected from Keratoconjunctivitis patients as eye infection related to adenovirus. Viral nucleic acids were extracted and specific primer pairs for HAdV-D L2 gene (encoding for penton base protein) was used to amplify the target gene and only positive samples were sent to sequencing.ResultsThe results revealed that only 6 samples give positive results for L2 gene amplification and then sent for sequencing for L2 (penton protein) gene-based typing. The results show that 4 local isolates (S1, S2, S3, S6) were similar to HAdV-D8 and 2 local isolates (S4, S5) were similar to HAdV-D20. Also the results display that the HAdV-37, prominent HAdV-D type of human eye infection, may be variant of HAdV-D20 due to that six variation were seen in S4and S5 local isolates nucleotide sequence in relation to HAdV-D37: T>C at position 14364, A>C at position 14411, T>C at position 14427, C>A at position 14448, G>A at position 14540 and T>C at position 14617, leading to only 2 amino acid change in resulted penton protein: T (Threonine) instead of K (Lysine) at position 204 and N (Asparagine) instead of D (Aspartic acid) at position 247.ConclusionThe current study concludes the possibility of implication of HAdV-D20 in eye infections especially conjunctivitis.

Project description:BackgroundMyotis albescens occurs from Mexico southward to Uruguay and Argentina. The species is known for all South American countries except French Guiana and Chile.New informationBased on one specimen recently collected in French Guiana we fill part of the gap in the distribution of the species in South America. Myotis albescens occurs in the Guiana Shield with other four congeners, from which it can be distinguished by external and skull traits. As an aid to future identifications, we provide a key to this assemblage.
