Project description:Micelles formed by the self-assembly of block copolymers in selective solvents have attracted widespread attention and have uses in a wide variety of fields, whereas applications based on their electronic properties are virtually unexplored. Herein we describe studies of solution-processable, low-dispersity, electroactive fibre-like micelles of controlled length from π-conjugated diblock copolymers containing a crystalline regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) core and a solubilizing, amorphous regiosymmetric poly(3-hexylthiophene) or polystyrene corona. Tunnelling atomic force microscopy measurements demonstrate that the individual fibres exhibit appreciable conductivity. The fibres were subsequently incorporated as the active layer in field-effect transistors. The resulting charge carrier mobility strongly depends on both the degree of polymerization of the core-forming block and the fibre length, and is independent of corona composition. The use of uniform, colloidally stable electroactive fibre-like micelles based on common π-conjugated block copolymers highlights their significant potential to provide fundamental insight into charge carrier processes in devices, and to enable future electronic applications.

Project description:The development of organic semiconducting nanowires that act as charge carrier transport pathways in flexible and lightweight nanoelectronics is a major scientific challenge. We report on the fabrication of fullerene nanowires that is universally applicable to its derivatives (pristine C(60), methanofullerenes of C(61) and C(71), and indene C(60) bis-adduct), realized by the single particle nanofabrication technique (SPNT). Nanowires with radii of 8-11 nm were formed via a chain polymerization reaction induced by a high-energy ion beam. Fabrication of a poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT): [6,6]-phenyl C(61) butyric acid methyl ester (PC(61)BM) bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaic cell including PC(61)BM nanowires with precisely-controlled length and density demonstrates how application of this methodology can improve the power conversion efficiency of these inverted cells. The proposed technique provides a versatile platform for the fabrication of continuous and uniform n-type fullerene nanowires towards a wide range of organic electronics applications.

Project description:The global production of unrecycled electronic waste is extensively growing each year, urging the search for alternatives in biodegradable electronic materials. Electroactive bacteria and their nanowires have emerged as a new route toward electronic biological materials (e-biologics). Recent studies on electron transport in cable bacteria-filamentous, multicellular electroactive bacteria-showed centimeter long electron transport in an organized conductive fiber structure with high conductivities and remarkable intrinsic electrical properties. In this work we give a brief overview of the recent advances in biodegradable electronics with a focus on the use of biomaterials and electroactive bacteria, and with special attention for cable bacteria. We investigate the potential of cable bacteria in this field, as we compare the intrinsic electrical properties of cable bacteria to organic and inorganic electronic materials. Based on their intrinsic electrical properties, we show cable bacteria filaments to have great potential as for instance interconnects and transistor channels in a new generation of bioelectronics. Together with other biomaterials and electroactive bacteria they open electrifying routes toward a new generation of biodegradable electronics.

Project description:The semiconductor nanowire architecture provides opportunities for non-planar electronics and optoelectronics arising from its unique geometry. This structure gives rise to a large surface area-to-volume ratio and therefore understanding the effect of nanowire surfaces on nanowire optoelectronic properties is necessary for engineering related devices. We present a systematic study of the non-uniform optical properties of Au-catalyzed GaAs/AlGaAs core-shell nanowires introduced by changes in the sidewall faceting. Significant variation in intra-wire photoluminescence (PL) intensity and PL lifetime (τ PL ) was observed along the nanowire axis, which was strongly correlated with the variation of sidewall facets from {112} to {110} from base to tip. Faster recombination occurred in the vicinity of {112}-oriented GaAs/AlGaAs interfaces. An alternative nanowire heterostructure, the radial quantum well tube consisting of a GaAs layer sandwiched between two AlGaAs barrier layers, is proposed and demonstrates superior uniformity of PL emission along the entire length of nanowires. The results emphasize the significance of nanowire facets and provide important insights for nanowire device design.

Project description:To improve the osteointegration property of biomedical titanium, nano-architectured electroactive coating was synthesized through the electrochemical polymerization of dopamine and pyrrole. The highly binding affinity of Ca2+ to the catechol moiety of doped dopamine enabled efficient interaction between polypyrrole/polydopamine nanowires and mineral ions. The results indicate that the PPy/PDA nanowires preserved its efficient electro-activity and accelerated the hydroxyapatite deposition in a simulated body fluid. The PPy/PDA nanowires coating could be applied to promote the osteointegration of titanium implant.

Project description:Electricity generation by Geobacter sulfurreducens biofilms grown on electrodes involves matrix-associated electron carriers, such as c-type cytochromes. Yet, the contribution of the biofilm's conductive pili remains uncertain, largely because pili-defective mutants also have cytochrome defects. Here we report that a pili-deficient mutant carrying an inactivating mutation in the pilus assembly motor PilB has no measurable defects in cytochrome expression, yet forms anode biofilms with reduced electroactivity and is unable to grow beyond a threshold distance (∼10 μm) from the underlying electrode. The defects are similar to those of a Tyr3 mutant, which produces poorly conductive pili. The results support a model in which the conductive pili permeate the biofilms to wire the cells to the conductive biofilm matrix and the underlying electrode, operating coordinately with cytochromes until the biofilm reaches a threshold thickness that limits the efficiency of the cytochrome pathway but not the functioning of the conductive pili network.

Project description:Soft electronics using metal nanowires have attracted notable attention attributed to their high electrical conductivity and mechanical flexibility. However, high-resolution complex patterning of metal nanowires on curvilinear substrates remains a challenge. Here, a micromolding-based method is reported for scalable printing of metal nanowires, which enables complex and highly conductive patterns on soft curvilinear and uneven substrates with high resolution and uniformity. Printing resolution of 20 μm and conductivity of the printed patterns of ~6.3 × 106 S/m are achieved. Printing of grid structures with uniform thickness for transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs) and direct printing of pressure sensors on curved surfaces such as glove and contact lens are also realized. The printed hybrid soft TCEs and smart contact lens show promising applications in optoelectronic devices and personal health monitoring, respectively. This printing method can be extended to other nanomaterials for large-scale printing of high-performance soft electronics.

Project description:Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) feature graphene-type 2D layered sheets but with a tunable structure, electroactivity, and high porosity. If these traits are well-combined, then 2D COFs can be applied in electronics to realize functions with a high degree of complexity. Here, a highly crystalline electroactive COF, BDFamide-Tp, was designed and synthesized. It shows regularly distributed pores with a width of 1.35 nm. Smooth and successive films of such a COF were fabricated and found to be able to increase the conductivity of an organic semiconductor by 103 by interfacial doping. Upon encapsulation of a photoswitchable molecule (spiropyran) into the voids of the COF layer, the resulted devices respond differently to light of different wavelengths. Specifically, the current output ratio after UV vs Vis illumination reaches 100 times, thus effectively creating on and off states. The respective positive and negative feedbacks are memorized by the device and can be reprogrammed by UV/Vis illumination. The reversible photostimulus responsivity and reliable memory of the device are derived from the combination of electroactivity and porosity of the 2D COF. This work shows the capability of 2D COFs in higher-level electronic functions and extends their possible applications in information storage.

Project description:Electronics allowing for visible light to pass through are attractive, where a key challenge is to make the core functional units transparent. Here, it is shown that transparent electronics can be constructed by epitaxial growth of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on single-layer graphene (SLG) to give a desirable transparency of 95.7% to 550 nm visible light and an electrical conductivity of 4.0 × 104 S m-1. Through lattice and symmetry match, collective alignment of MOF pores and dense packing of MOFs vertically on SLG are achieved, as directly visualized by electron microscopy. These MOF-on-SLG constructs are capable of room-temperature recognition of gas molecules at the ppb level with a linear range from 10 to 108 ppb, providing real-time gas monitoring function in transparent electronics. The corresponding devices can be fabricated on flexible substrates with large size, 3 × 5 cm, and afford continuous folding for more than 200 times without losing conductivity or transparency.

Project description:Today's organic electronic devices, such as the highly successful OLED displays, are based on disordered films, with carrier mobilities orders of magnitude below those of inorganic semiconductors like silicon or GaAs. For organic devices such as diodes and transistors, higher charge carrier mobilities are paramount to achieve high performance. Organic single crystals have been shown to offer these required high mobilities. However, manufacturing and processing of these crystals are complex, rendering their use outside of laboratory-scale applications negligible. Furthermore, doping cannot be easily integrated into these systems, which is particularly problematic for devices mandating high mobility materials. Here, it is demonstrated for the model system rubrene that highly ordered, doped thin films can be prepared, allowing high-performance organic devices on almost any substrate. Specifically, triclinic rubrene crystals are created by abrupt heating of amorphous layers and can be electrically doped during the epitaxial growth process to achieve hole or electron conduction. Analysis of the space charge limited current in these films reveals record vertical mobilities of 10.3(49) cm2 V-1 s-1. To demonstrate the performance of this materials system, monolithic pin-diodes aimed for rectification are built. The f3db of these diodes is over 1 GHz and thus higher than any other organic semiconductor-based device shown so far. It is believed that this work will pave the way for future high-performance organic devices based on highly crystalline thin films.
