Project description:Background:Nasal deformities accompanying unilateral incomplete cleft lip have minor skeletal and soft tissue deficiencies compared with deformities associated with unilateral complete cleft lip. Extended dissection and surgical incisions (often required for nasal deformities in complete cleft lip) are not recommended to address deformities accompanying incomplete cleft lip. The purpose of this study is to describe an innovative method involving a rotational composite flap for nasal repair in patients with unilateral cleft lip. Methods:Since 2016, 49 consecutive patients with unilateral incomplete cleft lip have undergone primary anatomical repair of accompanying nasal deformities. The technique involves a skin incision along the marginal and intercartilaginous borders to create a V-shaped composite flap consisting of vestibular skin and alar cartilage. Rotational mobilization of the composite flap creates a triangular raw surface laterally, which is closed by advancement of the vestibular skin. Results:This innovative method, which is based on the use of a rotational composite vestibular flap, achieves proper symmetry of the repaired nose. Conclusion:The herein described composite flap rhinoplasty is a good surgical option, which provides a good overall nasal symmetry in patients with nasal deformities accompanying unilateral incomplete cleft lip.

Project description:The bidomain equations have been widely used to model the electrical activity of cardiac tissue. While it is well-known that implicit methods have much better stability than explicit methods, implicit methods usually require the solution of a very large nonlinear system of equations at each timestep which is computationally prohibitive. In this work, we present two fully implicit time integration methods for the bidomain equations: the backward Euler method and a second-order one-step two-stage composite backward differentiation formula (CBDF2) which is an L-stable time integration method. Using the backward Euler method as fundamental building blocks, the CBDF2 scheme is easily implementable. After solving the nonlinear system resulting from application of the above two fully implicit schemes by a nonlinear elimination method, the obtained nonlinear global system has a much smaller size, whose Jacobian is symmetric and possibly positive definite. Thus, the residual equation of the approximate Newton approach for the global system can be efficiently solved by standard optimal solvers. As an alternative, we point out that the above two implicit methods combined with operator splittings can also efficiently solve the bidomain equations. Numerical results show that the CBDF2 scheme is an efficient time integration method while achieving high stability and accuracy.

It is also believed that the color of the bovine nose is regulated in a similar manner; however, the molecular mechanism underlying pigment deposition in the black nose has yet to be elucidated. The aim of the present study was to identify melanogenesis-associated genes that are differentially expressed in the black vs. yellow nose of native Korean cows.

Project description:HighlightsNovel artificial nose based upon electrode-deposited carbon dots (C-dots). Significant selectivity and sensitivity determined by "polarity matching" between the C-dots and gas molecules. The C-dot artificial nose facilitates, for the first time, real-time, continuous monitoring of bacterial proliferation and discrimination among bacterial species, both between Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and between specific strains. Machine learning algorithm furnishes excellent predictability both in the case of individual gases and for complex gas mixtures. Continuous, real-time monitoring and identification of bacteria through detection of microbially emitted volatile molecules are highly sought albeit elusive goals. We introduce an artificial nose for sensing and distinguishing vapor molecules, based upon recording the capacitance of interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) coated with carbon dots (C-dots) exhibiting different polarities. Exposure of the C-dot-IDEs to volatile molecules induced rapid capacitance changes that were intimately dependent upon the polarities of both gas molecules and the electrode-deposited C-dots. We deciphered the mechanism of capacitance transformations, specifically substitution of electrode-adsorbed water by gas molecules, with concomitant changes in capacitance related to both the polarity and dielectric constants of the vapor molecules tested. The C-dot-IDE gas sensor exhibited excellent selectivity, aided by application of machine learning algorithms. The capacitive C-dot-IDE sensor was employed to continuously monitor microbial proliferation, discriminating among bacteria through detection of distinctive "volatile compound fingerprint" for each bacterial species. The C-dot-IDE platform is robust, reusable, readily assembled from inexpensive building blocks and constitutes a versatile and powerful vehicle for gas sensing in general, bacterial monitoring in particular.

Project description:Isotactic polypropylene (PP) composite drawn fibers were prepared using melt extrusion and high-temperature solid-state drawing at a draw ratio of 7. Five different fillers were used as reinforcement agents (microtalc, ultrafine talc, wollastonite, attapulgite and single-wall carbon nanotubes). In all the prepared samples, antioxidant was added, while all samples were prepared with and without using PP grafted with maleic anhydride as compatibilizer. Material characterization was performed by tensile tests, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Attapulgite composite fibers exhibited poor results in terms of tensile strength and thermal stability. The use of ultrafine talc particles yields better results, in terms of thermal stability and tensile strength, compared to microtalc. Better results were observed using needle-like fillers, such as wollastonite and single-wall carbon nanotubes, since, as was previously observed, high aspect ratio particles tend to align during the drawing process and, thus, contribute to a more symmetrical distribution of stresses. Competitive and synergistic effects were recognized to occur among the additives and fillers, such as the antioxidant effect being enhanced by the addition of the compatibilizer, while the antioxidant itself acts as a compatibilizing agent.

Project description:Current primary cleft nose correction techniques are associated with a significant rate of long term alar collapse. The nasal lining on the cleft side has been observed to be distorted and deficient. Nasal endoscopy was used to map the two dimensional topography of the anterior nasal airway lining in a normal and patient with unilateral cleft lip. The vestibular nasal subunit was noted to have a triple structural overlap (Lateral crus, valve and vestibule units). A nasal lining subunit based surgical strategy was designed, based on the subunit principle. The lateral crural tethering was released and differential repositioning of the cartilage/lining complex performed. The difference in domal height between the cleft and non-cleft sides was translated into a superior and medial advancement of the cartilage/lining composite subunit. The valve sub-unit defect was resurfaced with a vermilion full thickness graft, taken at the time of primary cleft lip repair. Primary septal relocation was performed and no percutaneous cartilage sutures were done. Pre and post-operative anthropometry measurements were obtained, and repeated at follow up. Complete nasal correction was seen in the unilateral cleft lip patient and was noted to be stable at 1 year follow-up. A novel nasal cartilage/lining subunit topographical map is proposed and forms the basis for a surgical strategy addressing comprehensive correction of the unilateral cleft nasal deformity.

Project description:PurposeThe purpose of this study was to investigate the spatial distribution of human cone photoreceptors and examine cone density differences between the retinal meridians and quadrants.MethodUsing adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, the maculae were imaged in 17 eyes of 11 subjects with normal chorioretinal health aged 54 to 72 years. We measured cone density at 325 points within the central 10 degrees radius of the retina. Cone density spatial distributions along the primary retinal meridians and in four macular quadrants (superior-nasal, superior-temporal, inferior-temporal, and inferior-nasal) were analytically modeled using the polynomial function to assess the meridional and quadrantal difference.ResultsThe mean and 95% confidence interval for the prediction of cone density along the primary retinal meridians was modeled with a 7-degree one-variable polynomial (R2 = 0.9761, root mean squared error [RMSE] = 0.0585). In the 4 retinal quadrants, cone density distribution was described by a 2-variable polynomial with X degree 3 and Y degree 4 (R² = 0.9834, RMSE = 0.0377). The models suggest no statistically significant difference between medians and between quadrants. However, cone density difference at corresponding spatial locations in different areas can be up to 25.6%. The superior-nasal region has more areas with high cone density, followed by quadrants of inferior-nasal, inferior-temporal, and superior-temporal.ConclusionsAnalytical modeling provides comprehensive knowledge of cone distribution across the entire macula. Although modeling analysis suggests no statistically significant difference between medians and between quadrants, the remarkable cone density discrepancies in certain regions should be accounted for in applications requiring sensitive detection of cone variation.

Project description:The composite vibrational structure near 3650-3200 and 3000-2400 cm-1 in the observed IR absorption spectrum of Chelidonic acid has been explained in terms of intra- and inter-molecular -O-H∙∙∙O H-bonding attributed to monomer and dimer species computed at B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level. Three of the six dimer species derived out of ten monomeric components have shown both intra- and inter-molecular H-bonding. Vibrational modes of the monomer and dimer species are satisfactorily identified with the observed IR and Raman bands including frequency shifts associated with the H-bondings. The H-bond interactions in the monomer and dimer species have been characterized in terms of electron density, ρ(r), its Laplacian, ∇2ρ(r) and potential energy density at the O∙∙∙H bond critical points (BCPs) based on the Atoms in Molecules (AIM) theory. The attractive (van der Waals, H-bonds) and repulsive steric clash (SC) interactions are explained using computed reduced density gradient values from the noncovalent interaction (NCI) method. The AIM analysis confirms the presence of the intra- and inter-molecular H-bondings in the monomer/dimer species. The natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis of the natural charges and stabilization energy of the H-bonds for the dimer species further points to the stronger inter-than intra-molecular H-bonding.

Project description:Based on a phenomenological methodology, a three dimensional (3D) thermochemical model was developed to predict the temperature profile, the mass loss and the decomposition front of a carbon-reinforced epoxy composite laminate (T700/M21 composite) exposed to fire conditions. This 3D model takes into account the energy accumulation by the solid material, the anisotropic heat conduction, the thermal decomposition of the material, the gas mass flow into the composite, and the internal pressure. Thermophysical properties defined as temperature dependant properties were characterised using existing as well as innovative methodologies in order to use them as inputs into our physical model. The 3D thermochemical model accurately predicts the measured mass loss and observed decomposition front when the carbon fibre/epoxy composite is directly impacted by a propane flame. In short, the model shows its capability to predict the fire behaviour of a carbon fibre reinforced composite for fire safety engineering.

Project description:This data article presents experimental data on the in-plane mechanical behavior of a carbon-epoxy twill woven composite. Properties under tension, shear, and compression are measured and reported, which include force vs. stroke curves, stress vs. strain curves, in-plane on-axis and off-axis moduli, in-plane shear modulus, tensile and compressive strengths, post-peak residual stress under compression, and on-axis and off-axis Poisson ratios. Laminate plates of the composite were ordered from a commercial vendor and specimens of desired dimensions were cut using a waterjet cutter. Tests were conducted in accordance with ASTM standards D3039 and D6641, under on-axis and off-axis tension, and under on-axis compression. The data represents a complete set of in-plane mechanical properties for the composite and can be used directly as lamina level input to numerical FEA models and design analyses with woven composite laminates. It can also serve as benchmark for the calibration and validation of these models. It can be used to calculate properties for other off-axis configurations using transformation equations. Since the data is intended to be a lamina level input, it can be used to determine and model the in-plane behavior of any laminate layup with this composite. The data also serves to demonstrate the marked anisotropy and tension compression asymmetry exhibited by woven composites.
