Exchange-driven Magnetic Logic.

ABSTRACT: Direct exchange interaction allows spins to be magnetically ordered. Additionally, it can be an efficient manipulation pathway for low-powered spintronic logic devices. We present a novel logic scheme driven by exchange between two distinct regions in a composite magnetic layer containing a bistable canted magnetization configuration. By applying a magnetic field pulse to the input region, the magnetization state is propagated to the output via spin-to-spin interaction in which the output state is given by the magnetization orientation of the output region. The dependence of this scheme with input field conditions is extensively studied through a wide range of micromagnetic simulations. These results allow different logic operating modes to be extracted from the simulation results, and majority logic is successfully demonstrated.

Exchange biased anomalous Hall effect driven by frustration in a magnetic kagome lattice.

Project description:Co[Formula: see text]Sn[Formula: see text]S[Formula: see text] is a ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal that has been the subject of intense scientific interest due to its large anomalous Hall effect. We show that the coupling of this material's topological properties to its magnetic texture leads to a strongly exchange biased anomalous Hall effect. We argue that this is likely caused by the coexistence of ferromagnetism and geometric frustration intrinsic to the kagome network of magnetic ions, giving rise to spin-glass behavior and an exchange bias.

An electron transfer driven magnetic switch: ferromagnetic exchange and spin delocalization in iron verdazyl complexes.

Project description:The verdazyl 'pincer' ligand, 1-isopropyl-3,5-dipyridyl-6-oxoverdazyl (dipyvd), coordinates iron to form a series of pseudooctahedral coordination compounds [Fe(dipyvd)2]n+ (n = 0-3). In the case where n = 2, the molecular geometry and physical and spectral properties are consistent with a low spin (S = 0) iron(ii) ion coordinated by two ferromagnetically coupled radical ligands. Upon one electron reduction, the room temperature effective magnetic moment of the complex jumps from μeff = 2.64 to μeff = 5.86 as a result of spin crossover of the iron atom combined with very strong ferromagnetic coupling of the remaining ligand centered unpaired electron with the metal center. The sign of the exchange is opposite to that observed in other high spin iron/radical ligand systems and appears to be a result of delocalization of the ligand unpaired electron across the whole molecule. The large change in magnetic properties, combined with a delocalized electronic structure and accessible redox potentials, suggests the utility of this and related systems in the development of novel molecular spintronic devices.

Voltage-driven spintronic logic gates in graphene nanoribbons.

Project description:Electronic devices lose efficacy due to quantum effect when the line-width of gate decreases to sub-10 nm. Spintronics overcome this bottleneck and logic gates are building blocks of integrated circuits. Thus, it is essential to control electronic transport of opposite spins for designing a spintronic logic gate, and spin-selective semiconductors are natural candidates such as zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNR) whose edges are ferromagnetically ordered and antiferromagnetically coupled with each other. Moreover, it is necessary to sandwich ZGNR between two ferromagnetic electrodes for making a spintronic logic gate and also necessary to apply magnetic field to change the spin orientation for modulating the spin transport. By first principle calculations, we propose a method to manipulate the spin transport in graphene nanoribbons with electric field only, instead of magnetic field. We find that metal gates with specific bias nearby edges of ZGNR build up an in-plane inhomogeneous electric field which modulates the spin transport by localizing the spin density in device. The specific manipulation of spin transport we have proposed doesn't need spin-charge conversion for output and suggests a possible base for designing spintronic integrated circuit in atomic scale.

Pressure-Driven Two-Input 3D Microfluidic Logic Gates.

Project description:Microfluidics is a continuously growing field with potential not only in the fields of medical, chemical, and bioanalysis, but also in the domains of optics and information technology. Here, a pressure-driven 3D microfluidic chip is demonstrated with multiple logic Boolean functions. The presence and absence of fluid at the output of the gates represent the binary signals 1 and 0, respectively. Therefore, the logic gates do not require a specially functionalized liquid to operate. The chip is based on a multilevel of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-based polymeric sheets with aligned microchannels while a flexible polyimide-based sheet with a cantilever-like structure is embedded to enable a one-directional flow of the liquid. Several Boolean logic functions are realized (AND, OR, and XOR) using different fluids in addition to a half adder digital microfluidic circuit. The outputs of the logic gates are designed to be at different heights within the 3D chip to enable different pressure drops. The results show that the logic gates are operational for a specific range of flow rates, which is dependent on the microchannel dimensions, surface roughness, and fluid viscosity and therefore on their hydraulic resistance. The demonstrated approach enables simple cascading of logic gates for large-scale microfluidic computing systems.

Entropy-driven DNA logic circuits regulated by DNAzyme.

Project description:The catalytic DNA circuits play a critical role in engineered biological systems and molecular information processing. Actually, some of the natural or synthetic DNA circuits were triggered by covalent modifications, where conformational changes were induced to facilitate complex DNA engineering functions and signal transmissions. However, most of the reported artificial catalytic DNA circuits were regulated by the toehold-mediated reaction. Therefore, it is significant to propose a strategy to regulate the catalytic DNA circuit not only by the toehold-mediated mechanism, but also by involving the conformational changes induced by the covalent modification. In this study, we developed the catalytic DNA logic circuits regulated by DNAzyme. Here, a regulation strategy based on the covalent modification was proposed to control the DNA circuit, combing two reaction mechanisms: DNAzyme digestion and entropy-driven strand displacement. The DNAzyme and DNA catalyst can participate into the reactions alternatively, thus realizing the cascading catalytic circuits. Using the DNAzyme regulation, a series of logic gates (YES, OR and AND) were constructed. In addition, a two-layer cascading circuit and a feedback self-catalysis circuit were also established. The proposed DNAzyme-regulated strategy shows great potentials as a reliable and feasible method for constructing more complex catalytic DNA circuits.

Topological computation based on direct magnetic logic communication.

Project description:Non-uniform magnetic domains with non-trivial topology, such as vortices and skyrmions, are proposed as superior state variables for nonvolatile information storage. So far, the possibility of logic operations using topological objects has not been considered. Here, we demonstrate numerically that the topology of the system plays a significant role for its dynamics, using the example of vortex-antivortex pairs in a planar ferromagnetic film. Utilising the dynamical properties and geometrical confinement, direct logic communication between the topological memory carriers is realised. This way, no additional magnetic-to-electrical conversion is required. More importantly, the information carriers can spontaneously travel up to ~300 nm, for which no spin-polarised current is required. The derived logic scheme enables topological spintronics, which can be integrated into large-scale memory and logic networks capable of complex computations.

Free-standing magnetic nanopillars for 3D nanomagnet logic.

Project description:Nanomagnet logic (NML) is a relatively new computation technology that uses arrays of shape-controlled nanomagnets to enable digital processing. Currently, conventional resist-based lithographic processes limit the design of NML circuitry to planar nanostructures with homogeneous thicknesses. Here, we demonstrate the focused electron beam induced deposition of Fe-based nanomaterial for magnetic in-plane nanowires and out-of-plane nanopillars. Three-dimensional (3D) NML was achieved based on the magnetic coupling between nanowires and nanopillars in a 3D array. Additionally, the same Fe-based nanomaterial was used to produce tilt-corrected high-aspect-ratio probes for the accurate magnetic force microscopy (MFM) analysis of the fabricated 3D NML gate arrays. The interpretation of the MFM measurements was supported by magnetic simulations using the Object Oriented MicroMagnetic Framework. Introducing vertical out-of-plane nanopillars not only increases the packing density of 3D NML but also introduces an extra magnetic degree of freedom, offering a new approach to input/output and processing functionalities in nanomagnetic computing.

Skeletal metalation of lactams through a carbonyl-to-nickel-exchange logic.

Project description:Classical metalation reactions such as the metal-halogen exchange have had a transformative impact on organic synthesis owing to their broad applicability in building carbon-carbon bonds from carbon-halogen bonds. Extending the metal-halogen exchange logic to a metal-carbon exchange would enable the direct modification of carbon frameworks with new implications in retrosynthetic analysis. However, such a transformation requires the selective cleavage of highly inert chemical bonds and formation of stable intermediates amenable to further synthetic elaborations, hence its development has remained considerably challenging. Here we introduce a skeletal metalation strategy that allows lactams, a prevalent motif in bioactive molecules, to be readily converted into well-defined, synthetically useful organonickel reagents. The reaction features a selective activation of unstrained amide C-N bonds mediated by an easily prepared Ni(0) reagent, followed by CO deinsertion and dissociation under mild room temperature conditions in a formal carbonyl-to-nickel-exchange process. The underlying principles of this unique reactivity are rationalized by organometallic and computational studies. The skeletal metalation is further applied to a direct CO excision reaction and a carbon isotope exchange reaction of lactams, underscoring the broad potential of metal-carbon exchange logic in organic synthesis.

Model Driven Optimization of Magnetic Anisotropy of Exchange-coupled Core-Shell Ferrite Nanoparticles for Maximal Hysteretic Loss.

Project description:This study provides a guide to maximizing hysteretic loss by matching the design and synthesis of superparamagnetic nanoparticles to the desired hyperthermia application. The maximal heat release from magnetic nanoparticles to the environment depends on intrinsic properties of magnetic nanoparticles (e.g. size, magnetization, and magnetic anisotropy), and extrinsic properties of the applied fields (e.g. frequency, field strength). Often, the biomedical hyperthermia application limits flexibility in setting of many parameters (e.g. nanoparticle size and mobility, field strength and frequency). We show that core-shell nanoparticles combining a soft (Mn ferrite) and a hard (Co ferrite) magnetic material form a system in which the effective magnetic anisotropy can be easily tuned independently of the nanoparticle size. A theoretical framework to include the crystal anisotropy contribution of the Co ferrite phase to the nanoparticles total anisotropy is developed. The experimental results confirm that this framework predicts the hysteretic heating loss correctly when including non-linear effects in an effective susceptibility. Hence, we provide a guide on how to characterize the magnetic anisotropy of core-shell magnetic nanoparticles, model the expected heat loss and therefore, synthesize tuned nanoparticles for a particular biomedical application.

Ultrafast phase-change logic device driven by melting processes.

Project description:The ultrahigh demand for faster computers is currently tackled by traditional methods such as size scaling (for increasing the number of devices), but this is rapidly becoming almost impossible, due to physical and lithographic limitations. To boost the speed of computers without increasing the number of logic devices, one of the most feasible solutions is to increase the number of operations performed by a device, which is largely impossible to achieve using current silicon-based logic devices. Multiple operations in phase-change-based logic devices have been achieved using crystallization; however, they can achieve mostly speeds of several hundreds of nanoseconds. A difficulty also arises from the trade-off between the speed of crystallization and long-term stability of the amorphous phase. We here instead control the process of melting through premelting disordering effects, while maintaining the superior advantage of phase-change-based logic devices over silicon-based logic devices. A melting speed of just 900 ps was achieved to perform multiple Boolean algebraic operations (e.g., NOR and NOT). Ab initio molecular-dynamics simulations and in situ electrical characterization revealed the origin (i.e., bond buckling of atoms) and kinetics (e.g., discontinuouslike behavior) of melting through premelting disordering, which were key to increasing the melting speeds. By a subtle investigation of the well-characterized phase-transition behavior, this simple method provides an elegant solution to boost significantly the speed of phase-change-based in-memory logic devices, thus paving the way for achieving computers that can perform computations approaching terahertz processing rates.
