Aroui minusetosus, a new species of Scopelocheiridae from Korea (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Lysianassoidea).

ABSTRACT: A new species, Aroui minusetosussp. n., is recorded from Korean waters with detailed description and illustrations. A new key to all known Aroui is provided. The Korean material of this scopelocheirid is readily assigned to the genus Aroui by the presence of long and distally barbed setae on the outer plate of maxilla 2. This new species is distinguished from congeners by ventrally smooth coxae 1-3 and a setose posteroventral margin of coxa 4, the subchelate gnathopod 2 having a row of four robust setae on its posterior margin (including an elongate single locking seta), and the setation of all appendages which is less dense than in other species. This is the first record of scopelocheirid amphipods from Korean waters.

Project description:Four new isopods, Amakusanthura intermedia sp. nov., Apanthura laevipedata sp. nov., Idarcturus trispinosus sp. nov., and Neastacilla paralongipectus sp. nov., are reported from the sublittoral zones in Korean waters. Amakusanthura intermedia sp. nov. differs from its congeners by the following features: the uropodal exopod is sinuous distally and with pointed apex; the maxillipedal endite is present and reaching to the distal end of fused palp articles I and II; and the propodal palm of pereopod I is stepped. Apanthura laevipedata sp. nov. can be distinguishable from its related species by the following characteristics: the eye is lacking; the propodal palm of pereopod I is not stepped; and the uropodal exopod is not sinuous. Idarcturus trispinosus sp. nov. is diagnosed by the following features: the cephalon has three dorsal spines and a pair of lateral spines; pereonite IV has two pairs of small dorsolateral spines, four pairs of dorsal spines, and one posterior spine; and the pleotelson has three pairs of wings laterally. Neastacilla paralongipectus sp. nov. can be distinguished by the following characteristics: the body is smooth and lacking dorsal spines or tubercles; pereonite IV is approximately 5.4× longer than pereonites II and III together; and the pleotelson has two pairs of lateral wings. In this paper, detailed descriptions and illustrations of the four species are presented. A key to the genera of the family Arcturidae and keys to the species of the four genera are also provided.

A new species of the genus Pseudocrangonyx (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Pseudocrangonyctidae) from Korea.

Project description:A new subterranean species of pseudocrangonyctid amphipod, Pseudocrangonyx daejeonensissp. n. is described from the interstitial waters in Daejeon, Korea. Pseudocrangonyx daejeonensissp. n. is distinguished from three morphologically similar congeners, P. coreanus Uéno, 1966, P. febras Sidorov, 2009, and P. gudariensis Tomikawa & Sato, 2016, by the characteristics of antenna 1, antenna 2, mandible, gnathopod 2, pleopods, uropods 1-2, and telson. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear 28S rRNA and histone H3, and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and 16S rRNA genes revealed that P. daejeonensis is a sister species of the unnamed Pseudocrangonyx sp. 3 inhabiting central Japan.

A new species of Hangangbathynella (Crustacea, Bathynellacea, Parabathynellidae) from South Korea.

Project description:A new parabathynellid bathynellacean species, Hangangbathynella mihoensis sp. nov., was found in the groundwater of the Geumgang River in South Korea. This is the first report of Hangangbathynella from a tributary of the Geumgang River. All previously-reported species were found in the Hangang River and the origins of the two rivers are distinct from each other. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by the two-segmented mandibular palp and the absence of epipods on thoracopod II. In this study, we provide a description of the new species and an identification table for the genus Hangangbathynella. In addition, we obtained partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene for DNA barcoding.

A new species of Eusirus from Jeju Island, Korea (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Eusiridae).

Project description:A new eusirid amphipod, Eusirus bulbodigitussp. n., from Jeju Island, Korea is described with a detailed description and illustrations. Eusirus bulbodigitussp. n. shows common features with the five known eusirid amphipods Eusirus abyssi Stephensen, 1944, Eusirus columbianus Bousfield & Hendrycks, 1995, Eusirus hirayamae Bousfield & Hendrycks, 1995, Eusirus laticarpus Chevreux, 1906, and Eusirus parvus Pirlot, 1934, such as the mandibular palp article 3 bearing a group of setae laterally. However, this new species is differentiated by the combination of the following characteristics: the eyes are poorly developed, the propodus on pereopod 4 is slightly shorter, the inner margin of dactylus on pereopod 4 is swollen, the length of pereopods 5-7 is moderate, the urosomite 1 has a dorsal protrusion distally, and the telson is shallowly cleft. This is the first record of the genus Eusirus Krøyer, 1845 from Korean waters.

A new genus and species of Nannopodidae (Crustacea, Copepoda, Harpacticoida) from the Yellow Sea of South Korea.

Project description:A new monospecific genus of the family Nannopodidae Brady, 1880 is proposed, based on specimens of both sexes of Concilicoxa hispida gen. et sp. nov. collected from subtidal sandy sediments in the Yellow Sea of South Korea. The presence of a coxal outer projection on the first to fourth legs and reduction of both rami of the second to fourth legs in this new genus show a clear relationship with a clade, which is characterised by the modified thoracopods for burrowing ability, comprising Huntemannia Poppe, 1884, Rosacletodes Wells, 1985, Laophontisochra George, 2002, Acuticoxa Huys & Kihara, 2010 and Talpacoxa Corgosinho, 2012 in Nannopodidae. Within this clade, C. hispida gen. et sp. nov. is most closely related to L. maryamae George, 2002 in having the prehensile endopod in the first leg, broad intercoxal sclerite on the second to fourth legs and the female fifth leg being composed of separate exopod and baseoendopod, but is distinguished by the absence of mandibular exopod, two-segmented mandibular endopod, presence of four setae on the distal exopodal segment of the first leg, and fusion of the intercoxal sclerite to the coxae in the third and fourth legs. These four features are considered as autapomorphies of the new genus. The possible relationship amongst members of the nannopodid clade is further discussed. Additionally, some comments on the taxonomic position of L. terueae Björnberg, 2014 are given, resulting in the transfer of the species to Acuticoxa as A. terueae comb. nov.

New species of Caromiobenella Jeon, Lee & Soh, 2018 (Crustacea, Copepoda, Monstrilloida) from Chuja Island, Korea.

Project description:Male monstrilloid copepods belonging to the genus Caromiobenella Jeon, Lee & Soh, 2018 were collected from Chuja Island, Jeju, Korea, using a light trap. This paper describes a new species, Caromiobenellaohtsukai sp. n., based on the display of reduced, knob-like fifth legs on the ventral side of the first urosomal somite. A unique combination of male genitalia features and number of caudal setae further confirms its specificity. Molecular analysis based on two partial gene sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (mtCOI) and 28S ribosomal RNA (28S rRNA) also supports the designation of this species by showing a relevant divergence from known congeners. Caromiobenellaohtsukai sp. n. is the ninth member of this genus and also the ninth monstrilloid reported from Korea.

On the genus Mesopontonia Bruce, 1967 (Crustacea: Decapoda: Palaemonidae) in Korea, with the description of a new species.

Project description:Mesopontonia verrucimanus and Mesopontonia kimwoni sp. nov. are recorded from high-latitude temperate waters in Munseom Islet, Jejudo Island, Republic of Korea, with both species collected on gorgonians and sponges by trimix diving between 50 and 75 m depth. Mesopontonia kimwoni sp. nov. is morphologically allied to M. brevicarpus, but can be distinguished by the cutting edges of the fingers of the first chela being entire. Significant morphological variation in the rostrum as well as the second pereiopods is documented in M. verrucimanus, although cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) barcode analysis proves this to be infra-specific variation. A key to species of the genus Mesopontonia is provided.

A new genus and species of Sphyrapodidae (Crustacea, Peracarida, Tanaidacea) from the southern coast of the South Korea.

Project description:Wandogarida canaliculagen. n et sp. n. (Tanaidacea, Sphyrapodidae) is described from the southern coast of Korea (NW Pacific). The genus is included in the subfamily Sphyrapodinae Gu?u, 1980 by having a mandible lacking a palp. It has a close affinity with the genus Poligarida Bamber & Marshall, 2013 in the third pereonite having lateral pointed apophyses, the antennule of males with fringes of aesthetascs on articles 1 and 2 of the outer flagellum and the antenna with an elongate article 2. However, it is distinguished from Poligarida by having a maxillular palp. Wandogaridagen. n. can be differentiated from other genera within the subfamily Sphyrapodinae by the unique shape characterised by the male's antennule article 1 with its rough denticles and a deep groove, pleonites each with a ventral hyposphenium, the maxillule with uniarticulate palp and the presence of prominent sexual dimorphism in the mouthparts. An identification key to the five genera of the subfamily Sphyrapodinae is presented.

Sinocorophium hangangense sp. n. (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Corophiidae), a new species from Korea, with a key to the genus Sinocorophium.

Project description:A new species of the corophiid gammaridean amphipod belonging to the genus Sinocorophium Bousfield & Hoover was collected from the lower reaches of the Han River in Gyeonggi-do, Korea. A relatively large body size and morphology of the uropods 1 and 3 are the major characteristics which serve to distinguish the new species from its congeners. The new species is fully illustrated and extensively compared with related species. A key to the species of (Sinocorophium is also provided.

A new species of the genus Hexapleomera Dudich, 1931 from the South Korea, with molecular evidence (Crustacea, Tanaidacea, Tanaididae).

Project description:Two populations of new species are described for Hexapleomera Dudich, 1931 from the southeastern coast and Jeju island of South Korea (north west Pacific). The specimens were collected using a light trap set overnight at the entrance near a pier or harbour. Hexapleomera ulsanasp. n. is clearly differentiated from other species in the genus by the uropod with five articles, a maxillule palp with four distal setae, the maxilliped coxa with three proximal setae, the epignath with short and blunt spiniform seta, the propodus of pereopods 2-3 with three ventral setae, and the maxilla with a rugged shape of the distal margin. Differences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (mtCOI) gene observed between two populations of H. ulsana from different regions (Ulsan and Jeju Island) and between H. ulsana and H. urashima (Japan) were 1.1 % and 32.4 %, respectively. Two genetically-close populations differed in the setae on pleopod 3, the proximal setae on the maxilliped coxa, and the ventral setae on pereopods 2-3, which showed that geographical distance affected the morphological divergence. In addition, a comprehensive comparison with previous records of Hexapleomera was conducted and close examinations on the appendages, known to have morphological variations between the individuals of one species and/or between different genders, were carried out based on new species and discussed herein.
