Exploring the Formation of Black Phosphorus Intercalation Compounds with Alkali Metals.

ABSTRACT: Black phosphorus intercalation compounds (BPICs) with alkali metals (namely: K and Na) have been synthesized in bulk by solid-state as well as vapor-phase reactions. By means of a combination of in?situ X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and DFT calculations the structural behavior of the BPICs at different intercalation stages has been demonstrated for the first time. Our results provide a glimpse into the very first steps of a new family of intercalation compounds, with a distinct behavior as compared to its graphite analogues (GICs), showing a remarkable structural complexity and a dynamic behavior.

Alkali metal bilayer intercalation in graphene.

Project description:Alkali metal (AM) intercalation between graphene layers holds promise for electronic manipulation and energy storage, yet the underlying mechanism remains challenging to fully comprehend despite extensive research. In this study, we employ low-voltage scanning transmission electron microscopy (LV-STEM) to visualize the atomic structure of intercalated AMs (potassium, rubidium, and cesium) in bilayer graphene (BLG). Our findings reveal that the intercalated AMs adopt bilayer structures with hcp stacking, and specifically a C6M2C6 composition. These structures closely resemble the bilayer form of fcc (111) structure observed in AMs under high-pressure conditions. A negative charge transferred from bilayer AMs to graphene layers of approximately 1~1.5×1014 e-/cm-2 was determined by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), Raman, and electrical transport. The bilayer AM is stable in BLG and graphite superficial layers but absent in the graphite interior, primarily dominated by single-layer AM intercalation. This hints at enhancing AM intercalation capacity by thinning the graphite material.

Alkali metal doping of black phosphorus monolayer for ultrasensitive capture and detection of nitrogen dioxide.

Project description:Black phosphorus nanostructures have recently sparked substantial research interest for the rational development of novel chemosensors and nanodevices. For the first time, the influence of alkali metal doping of black phosphorus monolayer (BP) on its capabilities for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) capture and monitoring is discussed. Four different nanostructures including BP, Li-BP, Na-BP, and K-BP were evaluated; it was found that the adsorption configuration on Li-BP was different from others such that the NO2 molecule preferred a vertical stabilization rather than a parallel configuration with respect to the surface. The efficiency for the detection increased in the sequence of Na-BP < BP < K-BP < Li-BP, with the most significant improvement of + 95.2% in the case of Li doping. The Na-BP demonstrated the most compelling capacity (54 times higher than BP) for NO2 capture and catalysis (- 24.36 kcal/mol at HSE06/TZVP). Furthermore, the K-doped device was appropriate for both nitrogen dioxide adsorption and sensing while also providing the highest work function sensitivity (55.4%), which was much higher than that of BP (10.4%).

Interlayer Bond Formation in Black Phosphorus at High Pressure.

Project description:Black phosphorus was compressed at room temperature across the A17, A7 and simple-cubic phases up to 30 GPa, using a diamond anvil cell and He as pressure transmitting medium. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction showed the persistence of two previously unreported peaks related to the A7 structure in the pressure range of the simple-cubic phase. The Rietveld refinement of the data demonstrates the occurrence of a two-step mechanism for the A7 to simple-cubic phase transition, indicating the existence of an intermediate pseudo simple-cubic structure. From a chemical point of view this study represents a deep insight on the mechanism of interlayer bond formation during the transformation from the layered A7 to the non-layered simple-cubic phase of phosphorus, opening new perspectives for the design, synthesis and stabilization of phosphorene-based systems. As superconductivity is concerned, a new experimental evidence to explain the anomalous pressure behavior of Tc in phosphorus below 30 GPa is provided.

Electrochemical Atomic Force Microscopy of Black Phosphorus Composite Anodes: Electrode Destabilization and Degradation Mechanisms in Alkali-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Despite their higher capacity compared to common intercalation- and conversion-type anodes, black phosphorus (BP) based anodes suffer from significant capacity fading attributed to the large volume expansion (∼300%) during lithiation. Downsizing BP into nanosheets has been proposed to mitigate this issue, and various methods, particularly mechanical mixing with graphitic materials (BP-C), have been explored to enhance electrochemical performance. However, the understanding of BP-C hybridization is hindered by the lack of studies focusing on fundamental degradation mechanisms within operational battery environments. Here we address this challenge by employing electrochemical atomic force microscopy (EC-AFM) to study the morphological and mechanical evolution of BP-C composite anodes during lithiation. The results reveal that BP-C binding interactions alone are insufficient to withstand the structural reorganization of BP during its alloying reaction with lithium. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the critical role of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and BP-C interface evolution in determining the long-term performance of these composites, shedding light on the disparity in final electrode morphologies between binder-inclusive and binder-free BP-C composites. These findings provide crucial insights into the challenges associated with BP-based anodes and underscore the need for a deeper understanding of the dynamic behavior within operating cells for the development of stable and high-performance battery materials.

Designing Excess Electron Compounds by Substituting Alkali Metals to a Small and Versatile Tetracyclic Framework: A Theoretical Perspective.

Project description:Organic compound-based nonlinear optical (NLO) materials have sparked a lot of attention due to their multitude of applications and shorter optical response times than those of inorganic NLO materials. In the present investigation, we designed exo-exo-tetracyclo[6.2.1.13,6.02,7]dodecane (TCD) derivatives, which were obtained by replacing H atoms of methylene bridge carbon with alkali metals (Li, Na, and K). It was observed that upon the substitution of alkali metals at bridging CH2 carbon, absorption within the visible region occurred. Moving from 1 to 7 derivatives, the maximum absorption wavelength of the complexes exhibited a red shift. The designed molecules showed a high degree of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and excess electrons in nature, which were responsible for rapid optical response time and significant large molecular (hyper)polarizability. Calculated trends also inferred that the crucial transition energy decreased in order that also played a key role in the higher nonlinear optical response. Furthermore, to examine the effect of the structure/property relationship on the nonlinear optical properties of these investigated compounds (1-7), we calculated the density of state (DOS), transition density matrix (TDM), and frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs). The largest first static hyperpolarizability (βtot) of TCD derivative 7 was 72059 au, which was 43 times greater than that of the prototype p-nitroaniline (βtot = 1675 au).

Nanoscopy reveals surface-metallic black phosphorus.

Project description:Black phosphorus (BP) is an emerging two-dimensional material with intriguing physical properties. It is highly anisotropic and highly tunable by means of both the number of monolayers and surface doping. Here, we experimentally investigate and theoretically interpret the near-field properties of a-few-atomic-monolayer nanoflakes of BP. We discover near-field patterns of bright outside fringes and a high surface polarizability of nanofilm BP consistent with its surface-metallic, plasmonic behavior at mid-infrared frequencies <1176?cm-1. We conclude that these fringes are caused by the formation of a highly polarizable layer at the BP surface. This layer has a thickness of ~1?nm and exhibits plasmonic behavior. We estimate that it contains free carriers in a concentration of n?1.1 × 1020?cm-3. Surface plasmonic behavior is observed for 10-40?nm BP thicknesses but absent for a 4-nm BP thickness. This discovery opens up a new field of research and potential applications in nanoelectronics, plasmonics and optoelectronics.

Nitrogen in black phosphorus structure.

Project description:Group V elements in crystal structure isostructural to black phosphorus with unique puckered two-dimensional layers exhibit exciting physical and chemical phenomena. However, as the first element of group V, nitrogen has never been found in the black phosphorus structure. Here, we report the synthesis of the black phosphorus–structured nitrogen at 146 GPa and 2200 K. Metastable black phosphorus–structured nitrogen was retained after quenching it to room temperature under compression and characterized in situ during decompression to 48 GPa, using synchrotron x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. We show that the original molecular nitrogen is transformed into extended single-bonded structure through gauche and trans conformations. Raman spectroscopy shows that black phosphorus–structured nitrogen is strongly anisotropic and exhibits high Raman intensities in two Ag normal modes. Synthesis of black phosphorus–structured nitrogen provides a firm base for exploring new type of high-energy-density nitrogen and a new direction of two-dimensional nitrogen.

Ultratough graphene-black phosphorus films.

Project description:Graphene-based films with high toughness have many promising applications, especially for flexible energy storage and portable electrical devices. Achieving such high-toughness films, however, remains a challenge. The conventional mechanisms for improving toughness are crack arrest or plastic deformation. Herein we demonstrate black phosphorus (BP) functionalized graphene films with record toughness by combining crack arrest and plastic deformation. The formation of covalent bonding P-O-C between BP and graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets not only reduces the voids of GO film but also improves the alignment degree of GO nanosheets, resulting in high compactness of the GO film. After further chemical reduction and ?-? stacking interactions by conjugated molecules, the alignment degree of rGO nanosheets was further improved, and the voids in lamellar graphene film were also further reduced. Then, the compactness of the resultant graphene films and the alignment degree of reduced graphene oxide nanosheets are further improved. The toughness of the graphene film reaches as high as ?51.8 MJ m-3, the highest recorded to date. In situ Raman spectra and molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the record toughness is due to synergistic interactions of lubrication of BP nanosheets, P-O-C covalent bonding, and ?-? stacking interactions in the resultant graphene films. Our tough black phosphorus functionalized graphene films with high tensile strength and excellent conductivity also exhibit high ambient stability and electromagnetic shielding performance. Furthermore, a supercapacitor based on the tough films demonstrated high performance and remarkable flexibility.

Edge phonons in black phosphorus.

Project description:Black phosphorus has recently emerged as a new layered crystal that, due to its peculiar and anisotropic crystalline and electronic band structures, may have important applications in electronics, optoelectronics and photonics. Despite the fact that the edges of layered crystals host a range of singular properties whose characterization and exploitation are of utmost importance for device development, the edges of black phosphorus remain poorly characterized. In this work, the atomic structure and behaviour of phonons near different black phosphorus edges are experimentally and theoretically studied using Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Polarized Raman results show the appearance of new modes at the edges of the sample, and their spectra depend on the atomic structure of the edges (zigzag or armchair). Theoretical simulations confirm that the new modes are due to edge phonon states that are forbidden in the bulk, and originated from the lattice termination rearrangements.

Thermal Decomposition of Ternary Sodium Graphite Intercalation Compounds.

Project description:Graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) are often used to produce exfoliated or functionalised graphene related materials (GRMs) in a specific solvent. This study explores the formation of the Na-tetrahydrofuran (THF)-GIC and a new ternary system based on dimethylacetamide (DMAc). Detailed comparisons of in situ temperature dependent XRD with TGA-MS and Raman measurements reveal a series of dynamic transformations during heating. Surprisingly, the bulk of the intercalation compound is stable under ambient conditions, trapped between the graphene sheets. The heating process drives a reorganisation of the solvent and Na molecules, then an evaporation of the solvent; however, the solvent loss is arrested by restacking of the graphene layers, leading to trapped solvent bubbles. Eventually, the bubbles rupture, releasing the remaining solvent and creating expanded graphite. These trapped dopants may provide useful property enhancements, but also potentially confound measurements of grafting efficiency in liquid-phase covalent functionalization experiments on 2D materials.
