Freshwater ecosystems are a major source of methane (CH<sub>4</sub>), contributing 0.65 Pg (in CO<sub>2</sub> equivalents) yr<sup>-1</sup> towards global carbon emissions and offsetting ~25% of the terrestrial carbon sink.
