Dataset of surface water vapour density in southeast, Nigeria.

ABSTRACT: In this data article, analysis of surface water vapour density in Southeast, Nigeria were reported. The meteorological data were obtained for the period of 39 years between 1973 and 2012 from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climatology Centre. Five stations considered in the research area includes: Enugu, Onitsha, Abakaliki, Aba and Ihiala. Descriptive statistics were used to show an increase in monthly variation of surface water vapour density (SWVD) minimum value of about 7.15?g/m3 at Enugu in January to maximum value of about 21.96?g/m3 at Onitsha in April. Hence, the seasonal variation for South East indicate peak value within the months of March to May in the rainy season and a lower value around December to February which is the dry season. The results from this data will help engineers in proper design and planning of radiowave propagation and satellite communication systems in southeastern, Nigeria.

Project description:In this data article, analysis of surface refractivity and water vapour density in Southeast, Nigeria were reported. The meteorological data were collected for the period of 39 years between 1973 and 2012 from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climatology Centre. Five locations considered in the study area includes: Enugu, Onitsha, Abakaliki, Aba and Ihiala. Descriptive statistics were used to show an increase in monthly variation of refractivity of about 299.8 N units at Enugu in January to peak value of about 385.81 N units at Abakaliki in May. Hence, the seasonal variation for South East indicate maximum value within the months of March to May in the rainy season and a minimum value around December to February which is the dry season. The results from this data will help engineers in proper design and planning of radiowave propagation and satellite communication systems in southeastern, Nigeria.

Dataset of Stagnant Water and Wet Surface Label Images for Detection.

Project description:Clean water is one of the essential things in life. The running water in natural forms is considered as clean water. To avoid exposure to countless diseases, it is imperative to separate stagnant water from clean water. Thus the main objective of the proposed paper is to create an image dataset of stagnant water and wet surface to detect stagnant water. Accordingly, we considered stagnant water images in different forms and sizes to construct the dataset. In addition to that, brown and black earth surface is considered for the wet surface detection. The dataset consists of 1976 labeled images captured from various angles with annotated files. The dataset images are labelled for two classes, namely water and wet surface. This dataset is highly useful for deep learning experts working in the field of disease control management and post-rainfall earth surface monitoring.

Dataset on the assessment of water quality and water quality index of Ubogo and Egini rivers, Udu LGA, Delta State Nigeria.

Project description:The article contains datasets built on a baseline study on the selected physicochemical parameters and Water Quality Index of Ubogo and Egini Rivers, Delta State, for a period of six months, spanning the time frame between February - July, 2010. Within this space, six stations were shared equally among the two rivers using the three communities they flow through as guide, and water samples were collected on monthly basis from these stations. The objectives include determination of the spatial variations and background concentrations of the selected physicochemical parameters. Sixteen physicochemical parameters were analyzed in the water. Current velocity, air and water temperature were determined in-situ; the rest physicochemical parameters were determined via adopting standard methods. Apart from turbidity, the values of the rest physical parameters - air and water temperature, TDS showed significant difference (p < 0.05) across the stations.

Nanoparticle Size Effect on Water Vapour Adsorption by Hydroxyapatite.

Project description:Handling and properties of nanoparticles strongly depend on processes that take place on their surface. Specific surface area and adsorption capacity strongly increase as the nanoparticle size decreases. A crucial factor is adsorption of water from ambient atmosphere. Considering the ever-growing number of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles applications, we decided to investigate how the size of nanoparticles and the changes in relative air humidity affect adsorption of water on their surface. Hydroxyapatite nanoparticles of two sizes: 10 and 40 nm, were tested. It was found that the nanoparticle size has a strong effect on the kinetics and efficiency of water adsorption. For the same value of water activity, the quantity of water adsorbed on the surface of 10 nm nano-hydroxyapatite was five times greater than that adsorbed on the 40 nm. Based on the adsorption isotherm fitting method, it was found that a multilayer physical adsorption mechanism was active. The number of adsorbed water layers at constant humidity strongly depends on particles size and reaches even 23 layers for the 10 nm particles. The amount of water adsorbed on these particles was surprisingly high, comparable to the amount of water absorbed by the commonly used moisture-sorbent silica gel.

An expanded mammal mitogenome dataset from Southeast Asia.

Project description:Southeast (SE) Asia is 1 of the most biodiverse regions in the world, and it holds approximately 20% of all mammal species. Despite this, the majority of SE Asia's genetic diversity is still poorly characterized. The growing interest in using environmental DNA to assess and monitor SE Asian species, in particular threatened mammals-has created the urgent need to expand the available reference database of mitochondrial barcode and complete mitogenome sequences. We have partially addressed this need by generating 72 new mitogenome sequences reconstructed from DNA isolated from a range of historical and modern tissue samples. Approximately 55 gigabases of raw sequence were generated. From this data, we assembled 72 complete mitogenome sequences, with an average depth of coverage of ×102.9 and ×55.2 for modern samples and historical samples, respectively. This dataset represents 52 species, of which 30 species had no previous mitogenome data available. The mitogenomes were geotagged to their sampling location, where known, to display a detailed geographical distribution of the species. Our new database of 52 taxa will strongly enhance the utility of environmental DNA approaches for monitoring mammals in SE Asia as it greatly increases the likelihoods that identification of metabarcoding sequencing reads can be assigned to reference sequences. This magnifies the confidence in species detections and thus allows more robust surveys and monitoring programmes of SE Asia's threatened mammal biodiversity. The extensive collections of historical samples from SE Asia in western and SE Asian museums should serve as additional valuable material to further enrich this reference database.

Dataset of the density, water absorption and compressive strength of lateritic earth moist concrete.

Project description:In this data article, the experimental data of the density, water absorption and compressive strength of lateritic earth moist concrete are presented. 10% and 20% of fine aggregate were replaced with laterite. Potable water at 0.3 water/cement ratio was used and ordinary Portland cement used as the binder. Concrete cubes ( 150mm×150mm×150mm ) were cured and tested at 7 days, 14 days, 21 days, 28 days and 56 days. The reported original data is made publicly available for ensuring critical or extended analyses.

Dataset on hydrogeochemical characteristics of groundwater and surface water in Kattumannarkoil Taluk, India.

Project description:Surfacewater overlay groundwater at the groundwater/surface water interface(GSI). Water and chemicals are continually exchanged via GSI. Surface water recharges the underlying aquifer and undergo significant changes in chemical composition before it discharges back into the stream or at the surface. Thus a sustainable management of water resource needs an insight in the water chemistry and seasonal variations. The hydrochemical dataset representing a total of 37 groundwater samples and 13 surface water samples has been collected from Kattumannarkoil taluk,India to identify the factors governing water chemistry of the region. Hence, the samples were collected during two different seasons summer (April 2015) and monsoon (September 2015) to broadly cover seasonal variation. The collected samples were analyzed for physical and chemical parameters. The physical parameters measured in the field are pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS). The chemical parameters analyzed in the laboratory are calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), sodium (Na+), potassium (K +), chloride (Cl-), bicarbonate (HCO3 -), nitrate (NO3 -), phosphate (PO4), sulfate (SO4 2+) and silica (H4SiO4). Furthermore, the results were processed using AquaChem software, Geographical information system (GIS), multivariate statistical techniques and a computer program WATCLAST written in C ++. This hydrochemical dataset ascertain the utility purpose of water. The dataset can serve as a guide for hydrogeochemistry of other predominantly agricultural area that share similar geological characteristics. A global dataset of surface water and groundwater salinity measurements from 1980-2019.

Project description:Salinization of freshwater resources is a growing water quality challenge, which may negatively impact both sectoral water-use and food security, as well as biodiversity and ecosystem services. Although monitoring of salinity is relatively common compared to many other water quality parameters, no compilation and harmonisation of available datasets for both surface and groundwater components have been made yet at the global scale. Here, we present a new global salinity database, compiled from electrical conductivity (EC) monitoring data of both surface water (rivers, lakes/reservoirs) and groundwater locations over the period 1980-2019. The data were assembled from a range of sources, including local to global salinity databases, governmental organizations, river basin management commissions and water development boards. Our resulting database comprises more than 16.3 million measurements from 45,103 surface water locations and 208,550 groundwater locations around the world. This database could provide new opportunities for meta-analyses of salinity levels of water resources, as well as for addressing data and model-driven questions related to historic and future salinization patterns and impacts.

Observed behaviours of precipitable water vapour and precipitation intensity in response to upper air profiles estimated from surface air temperature.

Project description:Extremely heavy precipitation affects human society and the natural environment, and its behaviour under a warming climate needs to be elucidated. Recent studies have demonstrated that observed extreme precipitation increases with surface air temperature (SAT) at approximately the Clausius-Clapeyron (CC) rate, suggesting that atmospheric water vapour content can explain the relationship between extreme precipitation and SAT. However, the relationship between atmospheric water vapour content and SAT is poorly understood due to the lack of reliable observations with sufficient spatial and temporal coverage for statistical analyses. Here, we analyse the relationship between atmospheric water vapour content and SAT using precipitable water vapour (PWV) derived from global positioning system satellites. A super-CC rate appears in hourly PWV when the SAT is below 16?°C, whereas the rate decreases at high SAT, which is different from the precipitation-SAT relationship. The effects of upper air temperature and water vapour can consistently explain the super-CC rate of PWV relative to SAT. The difference between moist and dry adiabatic lapse rates increases with SAT, in consequence of more ability to hold water vapour in the free atmosphere under higher SAT conditions; therefore, attainable PWV increases more rapidly than the CC rate as SAT increases.

Computation of human health risk in surface water in Ado-Odo Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria.

Project description:Heavy metals find their way into surface and groundwater due to degrading environmental conditions, and as such consistent monitoring to avoid the adverse health implications associated with the consumption of polluted water is required. This study examined the concentrations for Lead (Pb), Nickel (Ni), Zinc (Zn), Chromium (Cr), Cadmium (Cd), Copper (Cu) and Arsenic (As) in the Surface water of River Balogun in Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria during the wet season and estimated the human health risk resulting from prolonged consumption by children and adult of dissimilar age groups without treatment. Although there were persistent occurrence of Nickel (Ni), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn) and Arsenic (As) in all stations sampled, the health risk assessment conducted revealed that both population groups are more likely to be affected by high concentration levels of Arsenic than any other Heavy metal present.
