Low-Frequency Raman Spectroscopy of Few-Layer 2H-SnS2.

ABSTRACT: We investigated interlayer phonon modes of mechanically exfoliated few-layer 2H-SnS2 samples by using room temperature low-frequency micro-Raman spectroscopy. Raman measurements were performed using laser wavelengths of 441.6, 514.4, 532 and 632.8?nm with power below 100??W and inside a vacuum chamber to avoid photo-oxidation. The intralayer Eg and A1g modes are observed at ~206?cm-1 and 314?cm-1, respectively, but the Eg mode is much weaker for all excitation energies. The A1g mode exhibits strong resonant enhancement for the 532?nm (2.33?eV) laser. In the low-frequency region, interlayer vibrational modes of shear and breathing modes are observed. These modes show characteristic dependence on the number of layers. The strengths of the interlayer interactions are estimated by fitting the interlayer mode frequencies using the linear chain model and are found to be 1.64?×?1019?N?·?m-3 and 5.03?×?1019?N?·?m-3 for the shear and breathing modes, respectively.

Probing stacking configurations in a few layered MoS2 by low frequency Raman spectroscopy.

Project description:Novel two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, such as MoS2, have recently gained a significant traction, chiefly due to their tunable electronic and optical properties. A major attribute that affects the tunability is the number of layers in the system. Another important, but often overlooked aspect is the stacking configuration between the layers, which can modify their electro-optic properties through changes in internal symmetries and interlayer interactions. This demands a thorough understanding of interlayer stacking configurations of these materials before they can be used in devices. Here, we investigate the spatial distribution of various stacking configurations and variations in interlayer interactions in few-layered MoS2 flakes probed through the low-frequency Raman spectroscopy, which we establish as a versatile imaging tool for this purpose. Some interesting anomalies in MoS2 layer stacking, which we propose to be caused by defects, wrinkles or twist between the layers, are also reported here. These types of anomalies, which can severely affect the properties of these materials can be detected through low-frequency Raman imaging. Our findings provide useful insights for understanding various structure-dependent properties of 2D materials that could be of great importance for the development of future electro-optic devices, quantum devices and energy harvesting systems.

Optical Contrast and Raman Spectroscopy Techniques Applied to Few-Layer 2D Hexagonal Boron Nitride.

Project description:The successful integration of few-layer thick hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) into devices based on two-dimensional materials requires fast and non-destructive techniques to quantify their thickness. Optical contrast methods and Raman spectroscopy have been widely used to estimate the thickness of two-dimensional semiconductors and semi-metals. However, they have so far not been applied to two-dimensional insulators. In this work, we demonstrate the ability of optical contrast techniques to estimate the thickness of few-layer hBN on SiO2/Si substrates, which was also measured by atomic force microscopy. Optical contrast of hBN on SiO2/Si substrates exhibits a linear trend with the number of hBN monolayers in the few-layer thickness range. We also used bandpass filters (500-650 nm) to improve the effectiveness of the optical contrast methods for thickness estimations. We also investigated the thickness dependence of the high frequency in-plane E2g phonon mode of atomically thin hBN on SiO2/Si substrates by micro-Raman spectroscopy, which exhibits a weak thickness-dependence attributable to the in-plane vibration character of this mode. Ab initio calculations of the Raman active phonon modes of atomically thin free-standing crystals support these results, even if the substrate can reduce the frequency shift of the E2g phonon mode by reducing the hBN thickness. Therefore, the optical contrast method arises as the most suitable and fast technique to estimate the thickness of hBN nanosheets.

Contrast and Raman spectroscopy study of single- and few-layered charge density wave material: 2H-TaSe?.

Project description:In this article, we report the first successful preparation of single- and few-layers of tantalum diselenide (2H-TaSe?) by mechanical exfoliation technique. Number of layers is confirmed by white light contrast spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Vibrational properties of the atomically thin layers of 2H-TaSe? are characterized by micro-Raman spectroscopy. Room temperature Raman measurements demonstrate MoS?-like spectral features, which are reliable for thickness determination. E?g mode, usually forbidden in backscattering Raman configuration is observed in the supported TaSe? layers while disappears in the suspended layers, suggesting that this mode may be enabled because of the symmetry breaking induced by the interaction with the substrate. A systematic in-situ low temperature Raman study, for the first time, reveals the existence of incommensurate charge density wave phase transition in single and double-layered 2H-TaSe? as reflected by a sudden softening of the second-order broad Raman mode resulted from the strong electron-phonon coupling (Kohn anomaly).

Thermal expansion coefficient of few-layer MoS2 studied by temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy.

Project description:The thermal expansion coefficient is an important thermal parameter that influences the performance of nanodevices based on two-dimensional materials. To obtain the thermal expansion coefficient of few-layer MoS2, suspended MoS2 and supported MoS2 were systematically investigated using Raman spectroscopy in the temperature range from 77 to 557 K. The temperature-dependent evolution of the Raman frequency shift for suspended MoS2 exhibited prominent differences from that for supported MoS2, obviously demonstrating the effect due to the thermal expansion coefficient mismatch between MoS2 and the substrate. The intrinsic thermal expansion coefficients of MoS2 with different numbers of layers were calculated. Interestingly, negative thermal expansion coefficients were obtained below 175 K, which was attributed to the bending vibrations in the MoS2 layer during cooling. Our results demonstrate that Raman spectroscopy is a feasible tool for investigating the thermal properties of few-layer MoS2 and will provide useful information for its further application in photoelectronic devices.

Low-Frequency Raman Spectroscopy of Pure and Cocrystallized Mycophenolic Acid.

Project description:The aqueous solubility of solid-state pharmaceuticals can often be enhanced by cocrystallization with a coformer to create a binary cocrystal with preferred physical properties. Greater understanding of the internal and external forces that dictate molecular structure and intermolecular packing arrangements enables more efficient design of new cocrystals. Low-frequency (sub-200 cm-1) Raman spectroscopy experiments and solid-state density functional theory simulations have been utilized together to investigate the crystal lattice vibrations of mycophenolic acid, an immunosuppressive drug, in its pure form and as a cocrystal with 2,2'-dipyridylamine. The lattice vibrations primarily consist of large-amplitude translations and rotations of the crystal components, thereby providing insights into the critical intermolecular forces governing cohesion of the molecular solids. The simulations reveal that despite mycophenolic acid having a significantly unfavorable conformation in the cocrystal as compared to the pure solid, the cocrystal exhibits greater thermodynamic stability over a wide temperature range. The energetic penalty due to the conformational strain is more than compensated for by the strong intermolecular forces between the drug and 2,2'-dipyridylamine. Quantifying the balance of internal and external energy factors in cocrystal formation indicates a path forward in the development of future mycophenolic acid cocrystals.

Raman Spectra Shift of Few-Layer IV-VI 2D Materials.

Project description:Raman spectroscopy is the most commonly used method to investigate structures of materials. Recently, few-layered IV-VI 2D materials (SnS, SnSe, GeS, and GeSe) have been found and ignited significant interest in electronic and optical applications. However, unlike few-layer graphene, in which its interlayer structures such as the number of its layers are confirmed through measurement of the Raman scattering, few-layer IV-VI 2D materials have not yet been developed to the point of understanding their interlayer structure. Here we performed first-principles calculations on Raman spectroscopy for few-layer IV-VI 2D materials. In addition to achieving consistent results with measurements of bulk structures, we revealed significant red and blue shifts of characteristic Raman modes up to 100?cm-1 associated with the layer number. These shifts of lattice vibrational modes originate from the change of the bond lengths between the metal atoms and chalcogen atoms through the change of the interlayer interactions. Particularly, our study shows weak covalent bonding between interlayers, making the evolution of Raman signals according to the thickness different from other vdW materials. Our results suggest a new way for obtaining information of layer structure of few-layer IV-VI 2D materials through Raman spectroscopy.

Structural, electronic and vibrational properties of few-layer 2H- and 1T-TaSe2.

Project description:Two-dimensional metallic transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are of interest for studying phenomena such as charge-density wave (CDW) and superconductivity. Few-layer tantalum diselenides (TaSe2) are typical metallic TMDs exhibiting rich CDW phase transitions. However, a description of the structural, electronic and vibrational properties for different crystal phases and stacking configurations, essential for interpretation of experiments, is lacking. We present first- principles calculations of structural phase energetics, band dispersion near the Fermi level, phonon properties and vibrational modes at the Brillouin zone center for different layer numbers, crystal phases and stacking geometries. Evolution of the Fermi surfaces as well as the phonon dispersions as a function of layer number reveals dramatic dimensionality effects in this CDW material. Our results indicate strong electronic interlayer coupling, detail energetically possible stacking geometries, and provide a basis for interpretation of Raman spectra.

Raman spectroscopy of a few layers of bismuth telluride nanoplatelets.

Project description:We can shape the electronic and phonon properties of Bi2Te3 crystals via the variation of the number of layers. Here, we report a Raman study with the aid of first-principles calculations on few-layered Bi2Te3 systems ranging from 5 to 24 nm layer thickness using 1.92, 2.41 and 2.54 eV excitation energies. We examine how the frequency position, intensity and lineshape of the main Raman modes (A11g, E2g, and A21g) behave by the variation of the layer thickness and excitation energy. We observed a frequency dispersion on the number of layers of the main modes, indicating changes in the inter- and intra-layers interaction. A resonant Raman condition is reached for all modes for samples with 11 and 18 nm thickness because of van Hove singularities at the electronic density of states. Also, the Breit-Wigner-Fano line shape of the A21g mode shows an increase of electron-phonon coupling for thick layers. These results suggest a relevant influence of numbers of layers on the Raman scattering mechanics in Bi2Te3 systems.

Pharmaceutical Evaluation of Levofloxacin Orally Disintegrating Tablet Formulation Using Low Frequency Raman Spectroscopy.

Project description:We evaluated the pharmaceutical properties of levofloxacin (LV) in the form of an orally disintegrating tablet (LVODT) to find a new usefulness of low frequency (LF) Raman spectroscopy. LVODT contained dispersed granules with diameters in the order of several hundred micrometers, which were composed of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), as confirmed by infrared (IR) microspectroscopy. On the contrary, the API and inactive pharmaceutical ingredients (non-APIs) were homogeneously distributed in LV tablet (LVT) formulations. Microscopic IR spectroscopy and thermal analyses showed that LVODT and LVT contained the API in different crystalline forms or environment around the API each other. Furthermore, powder X-ray diffraction showed that LVT contained a hemihydrate of the API, while LVODT showed a partial transition to the monohydrate form. This result was confirmed by microscopic LF Raman spectroscopy. Moreover, this method confirmed the presence of thin layers coating the outer edges of the granules that contained the API. Spectra obtained from these thin layers indicated the presence of titanium dioxide, suggesting that the layers coexisted with a polymer that masks the bitterness of API. The microscopic LF Raman spectroscopy results in this study indicated new applications of this method in pharmaceutical science.

Large Area Few-Layer Hexagonal Boron Nitride as a Raman Enhancement Material.

Project description:Increasingly, two-dimensional (2D) materials are being investigated for their potential use as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) active substrates. Hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN), a layered 2D material analogous to graphene, is mostly used as a passivation layer/dielectric substrate for nanoelectronics application. We have investigated the SERS activity of few-layer hBN film synthesized on copper foil using atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition. We have drop casted the probe molecules onto the hBN substrate and measured the enhancement effect due to the substrate using a 532 nm excitation laser. We observed an enhancement of ≈103 for malachite green and ≈104 for methylene blue and rhodamine 6G dyes, respectively. The observed enhancement factors are consistent with the theoretically calculated interaction energies of MB > R6G > MG with a single layer of hBN. We also observed that the enhancement is independent of the film thickness and surface morphology. We demonstrate that the hBN films are highly stable, and even for older hBN films prepared 7 months earlier, we were able to achieve similar enhancements when compared to freshly prepared films. Our detailed results and analyses demonstrate the versatility and durability of hBN films for SERS applications.
