Applications of Fluorogens with Rotor Structures in Solar Cells.

ABSTRACT: Solar cells are devices that convert light energy into electricity. To drive greater adoption of solar cell technologies, higher cell efficiencies and reductions in manufacturing cost are necessary. Fluorogens containing rotor structures may be helpful in addressing some of these challenges due to their unique twisted structures and photophysics. In this review, we discuss the applications of rotor-containing molecules as dyes for luminescent down-shifting layers and luminescent solar concentrators, where their aggregation-induced emission properties and large Stokes shifts are highly desirable. We also discuss the applications of molecules containing rotors in third-generation solar cell technologies, namely dye-sensitized solar cells and organic photovoltaics, where the twisted 3-dimensional rotor structures are used primarily for aggregation control. Finally, we discuss perspectives on the future role of molecules containing rotor structures in solar cell technologies.

Numerical Modeling of Sub-Wavelength Anti-Reflective Structures for Solar Module Applications.

Project description:This paper reviews the current progress in mathematical modeling of anti-reflective subwavelength structures. Methods covered include effective medium theory (EMT), finite-difference time-domain (FDTD), transfer matrix method (TMM), the Fourier modal method (FMM)/rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) and the finite element method (FEM). Time-based solutions to Maxwell's equations, such as FDTD, have the benefits of calculating reflectance for multiple wavelengths of light per simulation, but are computationally intensive. Space-discretized methods such as FDTD and FEM output field strength results over the whole geometry and are capable of modeling arbitrary shapes. Frequency-based solutions such as RCWA/FMM and FEM model one wavelength per simulation and are thus able to handle dispersion for regular geometries. Analytical approaches such as TMM are appropriate for very simple thin films. Initial disadvantages such as neglect of dispersion (FDTD), inaccuracy in TM polarization (RCWA), inability to model aperiodic gratings (RCWA), and inaccuracy with metallic materials (FDTD) have been overcome by most modern software. All rigorous numerical methods have accurately predicted the broadband reflection of ideal, graded-index anti-reflective subwavelength structures; ideal structures are tapered nanostructures with periods smaller than the wavelengths of light of interest and lengths that are at least a large portion of the wavelengths considered.

CdS/CdTe Heterostructures for Applications in Ultra-Thin Solar Cells.

Project description:The preparation of ultra-thin semi-transparent solar cells with potential applications in windows or transparent roofs entails several challenges due to the very small thickness of the layers involved. In particular, problems related to undesired inter-diffusion or inhomogeneities originated by incomplete coverage of the growing surfaces must be prevented. In this paper, undoped SnO₂, CdS, and CdTe thin films with thickness suitable for use in ultra-thin solar cells were deposited with a radiofrequency (RF) magnetron sputtering technique onto conductive glass. Preparation conditions were found for depositing the individual layers with good surface coverage, absence of pin holes and with a relatively small growth rate adapted for the control of very small thickness. After a careful growth calibration procedure, heterostructured solar cells devices were fabricated. The influence of an additional undoped SnO₂ buffer layer deposited between the conductive glass and the CdS window was studied. The incorporation of this layer led to an enhancement of both short circuit current and open circuit voltage (by 19 and 32%, respectively) without appreciable changes of other parameters. After the analysis of the cell parameters extracted from the current-voltage (I-V) curves, possible origins of these effects were found to be: Passivation effects of the SnO₂/CdS interface, blocking of impurities diffusion or improvement of the band alignment.

Inverted Silicon Nanopencil Array Solar Cells with Enhanced Contact Structures.

Project description:Although three-dimensional nanostructured solar cells have attracted extensive research attention due to their superior broadband and omnidirectional light-harvesting properties, majority of them are still suffered from complicated fabrication processes as well as disappointed photovoltaic performances. Here, we employed our newly-developed, low-cost and simple wet anisotropic etching to fabricate hierarchical silicon nanostructured arrays with different solar cell contact design, followed by systematic investigations of their photovoltaic characteristics. Specifically, nano-arrays with the tapered tips (e.g. inverted nanopencils) are found to enable the more conformal top electrode deposition directly onto the nanostructures for better series and shunt conductance, but its insufficient film coverage at the basal plane would still restrict the charge carrier collection. In contrast, the low-platform contact design facilitates a substantial photovoltaic device performance enhancement of ~24%, as compared to the one of conventional top electrode design, due to the shortened current path and improved lateral conductance for the minimized carrier recombination and series resistance. This enhanced contact structure can not only maintain excellent photon-trapping behaviors of nanostructures, but also help to eliminate adverse impacts of these tapered nano-morphological features on the contact resistance, providing further insight into design consideration in optimizing the contact geometry for high-performance nanostructured photovoltaic devices.

Impact of metastable defect structures on carrier recombination in solar cells.

Project description:The efficiency of a solar cell is often limited by electron-hole recombination mediated by defect states within the band gap of the photovoltaic (PV) semiconductor. The Shockley-Read-Hall (SRH) model considers a static trap that can successively capture electrons and holes. In reality however, true trap levels vary with both the defect charge state and local structure. Here we consider the role of metastable structural configurations in capturing electrons and holes, taking the tellurium interstitial in CdTe as an illustrative example. Consideration of the defect dynamics, and symmetry-breaking, changes the qualitative behaviour and activates new pathways for carrier capture. Our results reveal the potential importance of metastable defect structures in non-radiative recombination, in particular for semiconductors with anharmonic/ionic-covalent bonding, multinary compositions, low crystal symmetries or highly-mobile defects.

Omnidirectional Light Capture by Solar Cells Mimicking the Structures of the Epidermal cells of Leaves.

Project description:It is important to develop solar cells that can capture and utilize omnidirectional light in urban environments, where photovoltaic (PV) devices are installed in fixed directions. We report a new design for such light capture, which mimics the structure of a leaf epidermis. First, we analyzed the epidermal structures of different plant species in detail so that we could copy them and fabricate light-trapping layers with different shapes: as lens arrays, pillars, and lens arrays with rough surfaces. Then we analyzed the results of two-dimensional ray-tracing simulations of perfectly aligned and Gaussian-scattered incident light in terms of light-trapping capabilities. Based on these results, we prepared high-performance dye-sensitized solar cells with light-trapping layers that exhibited omnidirectional light capturing functionality. Our layers enhanced the efficiency of obliquely incident light capture by 70%. Therefore, we expect that new possibilities for next-generation PVs, extending beyond the current rigid concepts, will arise upon the application of these results and from findings that build on these results.

Novel symmetrical bifacial flexible CZTSSe thin film solar cells for indoor photovoltaic applications.

Project description:Environment-friendly flexible Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) solar cells show great potentials for indoor photovoltaic market. Indoor lighting is weak and multi-directional, thus the researches of photovoltaic device structures, techniques and performances face new challenges. Here, we design symmetrical bifacial CZTSSe solar cells on flexible Mo-foil substrate to efficiently harvest the indoor energy. Such devices are fabricated by double-sided deposition techniques to ensure bifacial consistency and save cost. We report 9.3% and 9% efficiencies for the front and back sides of the flexible CZTSSe solar cell under the standard sun light. Considering the indoor environment, we verify weak-light response performance of the devices under LED illumination and flexibility properties after thousands of bending. Bifacial CZTSSe solar cells in parallel achieve the superposition of double-sided output current from multi-directional light, significantly enhancing the area utilization rate. The present results and methods are expected to expand indoor photovoltaic applications.

Two Novel Small Molecule Donors and the Applications in Bulk-Heterojunction Solar Cells.

Project description:Two novel small molecules DTRDTQX and DTIDTQX, based on ditolylaminothienyl group as donor moiety and quinoxaline as middle acceptor moiety with different terminal acceptor groups were synthesized and characterized in this work. In order to study the photovoltaic properties of DTRDTQX and DTIDTQX, bulk-heterojunction solar cells with the configuration of FTO/c-TiO2/DTRDTQX(or DTIDTQX):C70/MoO3/Ag were fabricated, in which DTRDTQX and DTIDTQX acted as the donors and neat C70 as the acceptor. When the weight ratio of DTRDTQX:C70 reached 1:2 and the active layer was annealed at 100°C, the optimal device was realized with the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.44%. As to DTIDTQX:C70-based devices, the highest PCE of 1.70% was achieved with the optimal blend ratio (DTIDTQX:C70 = 1:2) and 100°C thermal annealing treatment. All the experimental data indicated that DTRDTQX and DTIDTQX could be employed as potential donor candidates for organic solar cell applications.

Cross-buckled structures for stretchable and compressible thin film silicon solar cells.

Project description:Increasing interests in stretchable electronic devices have resulted in vigorous research activities, most of which are focused on structural configurations. Diverse structural configurations are available for stretchability, including stiff-island, serpentine, and buckled structures. With easily deformable shapes and simple fabrication processes, buckled structures have the potential to realize stretchability. However, conventional buckled structures exhibit stretchability only in a single-axis direction. In the present study, a new type of cross-buckled structure, which can overcome the limitations of conventional buckled structures is developed. The stretchable thin film solar cells with the cross-buckled structure showed stable mechanical and electrical characteristics under both stretching and compressing conditions. The cross-buckled structure for stretchable electronic devices is expected to broaden the fields of wearable electronics, stretchable displays, and biocompatible applications.

Dynamic kirigami structures for integrated solar tracking.

Project description:Optical tracking is often combined with conventional flat panel solar cells to maximize electrical power generation over the course of a day. However, conventional trackers are complex and often require costly and cumbersome structural components to support system weight. Here we use kirigami (the art of paper cutting) to realize novel solar cells where tracking is integral to the structure at the substrate level. Specifically, an elegant cut pattern is made in thin-film gallium arsenide solar cells, which are then stretched to produce an array of tilted surface elements which can be controlled to within ±1°. We analyze the combined optical and mechanical properties of the tracking system, and demonstrate a mechanically robust system with optical tracking efficiencies matching conventional trackers. This design suggests a pathway towards enabling new applications for solar tracking, as well as inspiring a broader range of optoelectronic and mechanical devices.

A modular aldol approach for internal fluorescent molecular rotor chalcone surrogates for DNA biosensing applications.

Project description:Fluorescent molecular rotors (FMRs) are critical tools for probing nucleic acid structure and function. Many valuable FMRs have been incorporated into oligonucleotides, although the methods of doing so can be cumbersome. Development of synthetically simple, high yielding modular methods to fine-tune dye performance is crucial to expand the biotechnological applications of oligonucleotides. Herein, we report the utility of 6-hydroxy-indanone (6HI) with a glycol backbone to serve as a handle for on-strand aldehyde capture as a modular aldol approach for site-specific insertion of internal FMR chalcones. Aldol reactions with aromatic aldehydes containing N-donors proceed in high yield to create modified DNA oligonucleotides, which in the duplex match the stability of the fully paired canonical B-form with strong stacking interactions between the planar probe and the flanking base pairs, as evidenced by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The FMR chalcones possess remarkable quantum yields (Φfl up to 76%) in duplex DNA, coupled with large Stokes shifts (Δν up to 155 nm), light-up emissions (Irel up to 60-fold) that span the visible region (λem 518-680 nm) with brightness up to 17 480 cm-1 M-1. The library also contains a FRET pair and dual emission probes, suitable for ratiometric sensing. The ease of aldol insertion coupled with the excellent performance of the FMR chalcones permits their future wide-spread use.
