Long-term safety, health and mental status in men with vasectomy.

ABSTRACT: Vasectomy is an efficient male contraceptive method, but the long-term effects of this technology in a large population are unclear. To investigate the influence of vasectomy on long-term health effects, we recruited 485 men with a vasectomy and 1940 men without vasectomy in China. After obtaining basic information from the Aging Males' Symptoms (AMS) scale and other questionnaires, peripheral blood was drawn to assess the hormone levels, prostate specific antigen (PSA) and blood biochemistry. Using multiple linear regression analysis, these factors had no relationship with vasectomy except for four factors including the Somatic score (0.31, 0.02 and 0.61) in AMS, SF-36 score (-18.8, -32.00 and -5.60), "Role emotional" (-6.28, -10.34 and -2.22) and "Mental health" (-1.55, -3.08 and -0.02). A stratified analysis showed that with increased age, smoking and drinking, residence in township or a higher level of education, the mental health of men was worse. Vasectomy had no long-term effect on the level of sexual hormones in men, and it did not increase the level of PSA. The impact of the vasectomy on quality of life in men were mainly reflected in psychological effects, which suggests that men with vasectomy groups many benefit from professional psychological counseling.

Project description:ObjectivesThis study sought to determine the association of chronic stress with long-term adverse outcomes after acute myocardial infarction (AMI).BackgroundChronic stress has been shown to be associated with the development of cardiovascular disease and, in the case of particular types of stress such as job and marital strain, with recurrent adverse events after AMI. Little is known, however, about the association of chronic stress with mortality and adverse health status outcomes in a general AMI population.MethodsIn a cohort of 4,204 AMI patients from 24 U.S. hospitals completing the Perceived Stress Scale-4 (sum scores ranging from 0 to 16) during hospitalization, moderate/high stress over the previous month was defined as scores in the top 2 quintiles (scores of 6 to 16). Detailed data on sociodemographics, psychosocial status, and clinical characteristics were collected at baseline. Outcomes included patients' 1-year health status, assessed with the Seattle Angina Questionnaire, Short Form-12, and EuroQol Visual Analog Scale, and 2-year mortality.ResultsAMI patients with moderate/high stress had increased 2-year mortality compared with those having low levels of stress (12.9% vs. 8.6%; p < 0.001). This association persisted after adjusting for sociodemographics, clinical factors (including depressive symptoms), revascularization status, and GRACE (Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events) discharge risk scores (hazard ratio: 1.42: 95% confidence interval: 1.15 to 1.76). Furthermore, moderate/high stress was independently associated with poor 1-year health status, including a greater likelihood of angina, worse disease-specific and generic health status, and worse perceived health (p < 0.01 for all).ConclusionsModerate/high perceived stress at the time of an AMI is associated with adverse long-term outcomes, even after adjustment for important confounding factors. Future studies need to examine whether stress mediates observed racial and socioeconomic disparities and whether novel interventions targeting chronic stress and coping skills can improve post-AMI outcomes.

Project description:From an evolutionary perspective, phenotypic, social, and environmental factors help to shape the different costs and benefits of pursuing different reproductive strategies (or a mixture of them) from one individual to another. Since men's reproductive success is mainly constrained to women's availability, their mating orientations should be partially calibrated by features that women prefer in a potential partner. For long-term relationships, women prefer traits that signal access to resources, protection skills, and the willingness to share them. Using generalized linear models with laboratory data taken from a Chilean population (N = 197), this study aimed to test whether real and potential resources (measured as self-reported socioeconomic status), protection skills (measured as handgrip strength), and the willingness to provide resources and protection (measured as their disposition toward parenthood) are related to mating orientation in men. Our predictions were: (1) socioeconomic status would be positively associated with long-term and short-term mating orientation but for long-term-oriented individuals, this would be enhanced by having a more favorable parenthood disposition and (2) strength would be positively related to long-term mating orientation in men with higher socioeconomic status and a favorable disposition toward parenthood and it would have a positive and direct association with short-term mating orientation. Our results partially supported the first hypothesis, since men with higher socioeconomic status were more long-term oriented, but parenting disposition did not moderate this effect. Contrary to our expectations, socioeconomic status was not related to short-term mating orientation. Strength appeared not to be significant for long-term mating orientation, even interacting with other traits. However, strength by itself was powerfully linked with a short-term mating orientation. Our results suggest that only some individuals that are attractive for long-term relationships are indeed long-term oriented and may reflect the overall conflict of interests between mating strategies among sexes.
