Project description:IntroductionEarly formal instruction in procedural skills may increase the frequency with which residents perform procedures in the clinical setting. This workshop trained internal medicine residents in ultrasound skills and manual skills required to perform procedures common on medicine wards and required for board eligibility.MethodsSince 2016, our internal medicine residency program has executed three annual half-day workshops for interns during orientation, before clinical duties began. Prior to the workshop, we directed interns to relevant educational resources in the form of online modules and videos. At the workshop, trainees rotated in small groups through facilitated stations to learn basics of procedural ultrasound and to practice manual tasks performed during paracentesis, thoracentesis, lumbar puncture, and peripheral intravenous catheter placement. We administered questionnaires before and immediately after the workshop and used Wilcoxon signed rank tests to compare self-assessed independence and confidence.ResultsTwo hundred four interns with little prior procedural training participated in the workshop. Most participants (85%) indicated that orientation was the best timing for this training experience when compared to later options. Confidence and independence increased for ultrasound-marked thoracentesis, paracentesis, and peripheral intravenous catheters and for lumbar puncture without ultrasound.DiscussionThis internal medicine intern orientation workshop on procedures and procedural ultrasound was well received and increased participants' confidence and sense of independence. This publication contains materials needed to reproduce the training experience.

Project description:Background/aimWith the pharmaceutical innovation and clinical knowledge updating, the continuing education and on-the-job training are extremely important for improving community pharmacists' professional competence. Previous training often adopted traditional lecture-based teaching, and the efficacy was limited. The aim of this study is to develop a new strategy for community pharmacist training.MethodsBased on the BOPPPS (Bridge-in, Objective, Pre-assessment, Participatory Learning, Post-assessment and Summary) teaching model and workshop method, a continuing on-the-job training program was constructed. Participates were randomly and evenly divided into two groups by random number table method. Twenty-four community pharmacists in total completed all training contents and evaluation components in this study. Twelve pharmacists in experimental group were trained via this new BOPPPS-based workshop, while others still adopted traditional didactic lecture-based approaches.ResultsAfter training, quantitative examination combined with clinical pharmacy practice tests were carried out to evaluate the effectiveness and outcomes of two training groups. For written exam, the total scores from the BOPPPS-based workshop group (82.67 ± 4.70) was higher than that of traditional lectured-base group (73.75 ± 6.15) (P < 0.001). Encouragingly, compared with the results of practical ability assessment from traditional training group (71.75 ± 4.75), the pharmacists receiving BOPPPS-based workshop training presented more excellent performance (78.25 ± 5.03), which displayed statistically significant differences (P < 0.01). In addition, an anonymous questionnaire was used to survey trainees' feelings after completing this continuing education program. The results revealed that the BOPPPS-based workshop can bring a better learning experience than traditional lecture-based training, and the percentages of positive response to each item were more than 91.7%.ConclusionsThrough multi-dimensional evaluation, it was suggested that our BOPPPS-based workshop achieved desired training effects. Moreover, our research also demonstrated that this strategy had advantages of stimulating inspiration, autonomous learning, team-work spirit and pharmacy practice improvement. It may provide a reference of innovative training method for community pharmacists.

Project description:IntroductionPhysicians are increasingly being called on to address inequities created by social and structural determinants of health, yet few receive training in specific leadership skills that allow them to do so effectively.MethodsWe developed a workshop to introduce incoming medical interns from all specialties at Boston-area residency programs to community organizing as a framework for effective physician advocacy. We utilized didactic sessions, video examples, and small-group practice led by trained coaches to familiarize participants with one community organizing leadership skill-public narrative-as a means of creating the relationships that underlie collective action. We offered this 3-hour, cross-institutional workshop just prior to intern orientation and evaluated it through a postworkshop survey.ResultsIn June 2019, 51 residents from 13 programs at seven academic medical centers attended this workshop. In the postworkshop survey, participants agreed with positive evaluative statements about the workshop's value and impact on their knowledge, with a mean score on all items of over 4 (5-point Likert scale, 1 = strongly disagree, 5 = strongly agree; response rate: 34 of 51). Free-text comments emphasized the workshop's effectiveness in evoking positive feelings of solidarity, community, and professional identity.DiscussionThe workshop effectively introduced participants to community organizing and public narrative, allowed them to apply the principles of public narrative by developing their own stories of self, and demonstrated how these practices can be utilized in physician advocacy. The workshop also connected participants to their motivations for pursuing medicine and stimulated interest in more community organizing training.

Project description:IntroductionIn response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for social distancing, medical education curricula across the country had to be quickly transitioned from in-person experiences to remote sessions. Simultaneously, use of telemedicine in clinical practice skyrocketed. Despite telemedicine expansion and the opportunity afforded to teach these skills virtually, many institutions lacked telemedicine curricula.MethodsWe developed and evaluated a foundational telemedicine workshop during a pandemic (158 students in 28 groups) guided by principles to maximize learner engagement during remote learning, including use of discrete, time-limited activities (self-assessment, templated group exercises, review of brief multimedia, and active role-play.).ResultsStudents completed pre- and postsession surveys to assess session impact. Of 158 students, 92 (58%) completed the presession survey, and 36 (23%) completed the postsession survey. There was an increase in confidence in all areas, particularly in skills related to starting the encounter, minimizing barriers, and taking the medical history. Learners reported the physical examination content as more useful than any other area and valued the exemplar videos provided.DiscussionThe pandemic highlighted our own institution's need to develop telemedicine curricula to prepare medical students to provide this increasingly essential service. We developed a foundational telemedicine skills session that increased students' reported confidence in their telemedicine knowledge and skills. The session could be easily adapted by other schools interested in incorporating telemedicine into their preclerkship curriculum. Additional experiences providing opportunities to practice and receive feedback on telemedicine skills with standardized and real patients are warranted.

Project description:IntroductionEndoscopy education in the US traditionally follows the apprenticeship model, in which educators often have little formal training in education, and the acquisition of procedural skills by trainees relies heavily on procedure volume and learning by doing. A growing appreciation of the need to formally educate endoscopy trainers has led to the development of mandatory training curricula in other countries, but the implementation of such courses in the US has been limited. This 1-hour workshop aimed to provide educators the rationale and skills to offer a more standardized approach to procedural training.MethodsWe implemented a 1-hour interactive workshop designed for both gastroenterology faculty and trainees. The four sections of the workshop focused on: (1) rationale for standardized approach, (2) verbal and physical preparation for training, (3) training using standardized language and avoidance of cognitive overload, and (4) providing feedback. Four interactive video cases followed by large-group discussion were included.ResultsA total of 13 gastroenterology faculty and trainees attended the workshop. Eight additional members of the gastroenterology faculty watched an online video of the workshop. Survey data revealed that the workshop was effective in helping faculty set goals with trainees (M pre = 2.4, M post = 3.6), identify standardized language to use during endoscopy (M pre = 3.1, M post = 3.8), and give feedback after sessions (M pre = 3.4, M post = 4.1).DiscussionA 1-hour lecture-based interactive workshop with video cases was an engaging and effective introduction to formal endoscopy education techniques. The format was easy to incorporate into faculty conferences and can help bridge the current gap in formal endoscopy faculty training.

Project description:Introduction:Medical school reproductive health curricula often lack adequate education regarding intrauterine devices (IUDs). When placed in clinical scenarios, students may have insufficient knowledge and training to counsel patients about IUDs. Methods:We developed a workshop for preclinical medical students and assessed whether it improved knowledge of and comfort with counseling patients on IUDs. The workshop consisted of a 45-minute lecture and a 45-minute IUD simulation training. Each session was taught to groups of 40 to 50 students. The workshop was evaluated between January 2016 and November 2017. Participants completed pre- and postsurveys. The primary outcome was comfort level with IUD counseling. Results:One hundred forty-two students completed the workshop, and 137 completed both pre- and postsurveys (96% response rate). At baseline, more than half (56%, n = 77) had not seen an IUD inserted. Students scoring 75% or higher on the IUD knowledge questions increased from 51% (n = 70) on presurveys to 87% (n = 119) on postsurveys (p < .0001). Students agreeing or strongly agreeing that they felt comfortable counseling patients on IUDs increased from 27% (n = 37) to 92% (n = 122, p < .0001) on postsurveys. All students felt the workshop was worthwhile. Discussion:Preclinical students showed increased knowledge of and comfort with IUDs after a simple IUD simulation. Medical schools could utilize this workshop to ensure students have hands-on training and experience related to IUDs prior to clinical rotations and for their future careers.

Project description:IntroductionSocial determinants of health (SDHs) are now recognized as a major factor affecting patient health outcomes and should be addressed by the health care system. Many medical students do not receive practical training on how to assess SDH needs or connect individuals with appropriate resources.MethodsThe authors developed and delivered a 90-minute case-based workshop to train undergraduate medical students in assessing SDH needs and connecting with community resources during their service-learning experiences. The workshop was implemented with undergraduate medical students participating in service-learning programs that linked individuals with resources, with the intention that this information could be used in other educational activities and the students' future medical practice.ResultsTwenty-five students participated in the training. Pre- and postsurveys indicated that the training resulted in statistically significant increases in average knowledge and confidence in all topic areas. All participants reported enhanced knowledge and indicated that they would use this information in service-learning and their future medical practice.DiscussionIn addition to teaching medical students about the impact of SDHs, this cased-based curriculum provides learners with tools to understand the barriers their patients may face as well as how policy and local resources impact them.

Project description:We report the major conclusions of the online open-access workshop "Computational Applications in Secondary Metabolite Discovery (CAiSMD)" that took place from 08 to 10 March 2021. Invited speakers from academia and industry and about 200 registered participants from five continents (Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, and North America) took part in the workshop. The workshop highlighted the potential applications of computational methodologies in the search for secondary metabolites (SMs) or natural products (NPs) as potential drugs and drug leads. During 3 days, the participants of this online workshop received an overview of modern computer-based approaches for exploring NP discovery in the "omics" age. The invited experts gave keynote lectures, trained participants in hands-on sessions, and held round table discussions. This was followed by oral presentations with much interaction between the speakers and the audience. Selected applicants (early-career scientists) were offered the opportunity to give oral presentations (15 min) and present posters in the form of flash presentations (5 min) upon submission of an abstract. The final program available on the workshop website ( https://caismd.indiayouth.info/ ) comprised of 4 keynote lectures (KLs), 12 oral presentations (OPs), 2 round table discussions (RTDs), and 5 hands-on sessions (HSs). This meeting report also references internet resources for computational biology in the area of secondary metabolites that are of use outside of the workshop areas and will constitute a long-term valuable source for the community. The workshop concluded with an online survey form to be completed by speakers and participants for the goal of improving any subsequent editions.

Project description:The modelling of materials properties and processes from first principles is becoming sufficiently accurate as to facilitate the design and testing of new systems in silico. Computational materials science is both valuable and increasingly necessary for developing novel functional materials and composites that meet the requirements of next-generation technology. A range of simulation techniques are being developed and applied to problems related to materials for energy generation, storage and conversion including solar cells, nuclear reactors, batteries, fuel cells, and catalytic systems. Such techniques may combine crystal-structure prediction (global optimisation), data mining (materials informatics) and high-throughput screening with elements of machine learning. We explore the development process associated with computational materials design, from setting the requirements and descriptors to the development and testing of new materials. As a case study, we critically review progress in the fields of thermoelectrics and photovoltaics, including the simulation of lattice thermal conductivity and the search for Pb-free hybrid halide perovskites. Finally, a number of universal chemical-design principles are advanced.

Project description:Auxetics comprise a rare family of materials that manifest negative Poisson's ratio, which causes an expansion instead of contraction under tension. Most known homogeneously auxetic materials are porous foams or artificial macrostructures and there are few examples of inorganic materials that exhibit this behavior as polycrystalline solids. It is now possible to accelerate the discovery of materials with target properties, such as auxetics, using high-throughput computations, open databases, and efficient search algorithms. Candidates exhibiting features correlating with auxetic behavior were chosen from the set of more than 67 000 materials in the Materials Project database. Poisson's ratios were derived from the calculated elastic tensor of each material in this reduced set of compounds. We report that this strategy results in the prediction of three previously unidentified homogeneously auxetic materials as well as a number of compounds with a near-zero homogeneous Poisson's ratio, which are here denoted "anepirretic materials".There are very few inorganic materials with auxetic homogenous Poisson's ratio in polycrystalline form. Here authors develop an approach to screening materials databases for target properties such as negative Poisson's ratio by using stability and structural motifs to predict new instances of homogenous auxetic behavior as well as a number of materials with near-zero Poisson's ratio.
