Error-Discovery Learning Boosts Student Engagement and Performance, while Reducing Student Attrition in a Bioinformatics Course.

ABSTRACT: We sought to test a hypothesis that systemic blind spots in active learning are a barrier both for instructors-who cannot see what every student is actually thinking on each concept in each class-and for students-who often cannot tell precisely whether their thinking is right or wrong, let alone exactly how to fix it. We tested a strategy for eliminating these blind spots by having students answer open-ended, conceptual problems using a Web-based platform, and measured the effects on student attrition, engagement, and performance. In 4 years of testing both in class and using an online platform, this approach revealed (and provided specific resolution lessons for) more than 200 distinct conceptual errors, dramatically increased average student engagement, and reduced student attrition by approximately fourfold compared with the original lecture course format (down from 48.3% to 11.4%), especially for women undergraduates (down from 73.1% to 7.4%). Median exam scores increased from 53% to 72-80%, and the bottom half of students boosted their scores to the range in which the top half had scored before the pedagogical switch. By contrast, in our control year with the same active-learning content (but without this "zero blind spots" approach), these gains were not observed.

Project description:IntroductionThere has been a move to a "flipped classroom" (FC) in medical education. The FC promotes active learning and utilizes independent preparation prior to in-class sessions. Few studies have evaluated the effectiveness of the FC approach in medical education, specifically via virtual learning. The purpose of this study evaluates student and faculty perceptions of the FC approach and relationships between student engagement and performance.MethodThe first-year medical student psychiatry curriculum was redesigned with an FC approach and subsequently altered by COVID-19 to a virtual learning environment. A mixed-method approach was used to examine both qualitative assessment and quantitative performance data. Students and facilitators were invited to participate in surveys regarding the curriculum changes. Student performance data was collected via quizzes and examinations. Engagement was evaluated by student participation in National Board of Medical Examiners-style multiple-choice questions delivered via Top Hat®. Correlational analyses were used to evaluate associations between engagement and performance. T-tests were used to compare student satisfaction across 2019 and 2020.ResultsPerformance on in-class questions was positively associated with class rank and performance (p < 0.005). More students were either satisfied or strongly satisfied (91.5%) in 2020 compared to 85.7% in 2019 (two-tailed t-test, p = 0.04). Most students (81.3%) preferred in-class questions to lectures. In 2020, 62.6% of student comments were positive regarding the psychiatry curriculum vs 33.3% in 2019. Over 61.5% of facilitators felt positive towards the changes.ConclusionOur results demonstrate a positive relationship between engagement and class performance. Students and facilitators positively perceived the approach, with students preferring in-class questions compared to lectures. Future research should evaluate overall performance on standardized tests, third-year clerkships, and number of students matching into psychiatry.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s40670-021-01287-x.

Project description:BackgroundActive learning relies on students' engagement with teachers, study materials and/or each other. Although medical education has adopted active learning as a core component of medical training, teachers have difficulties recognising when and why their students engage or disengage and how to teach in ways that optimise engagement. With a better understanding of the dynamics of student engagement in small-group active learning settings, teachers could be facilitated in effectively engaging their students.MethodsWe conducted a video-stimulated recall study to explore medical students' engagement during small-group learning activities. We recorded one teaching session of two different groups and selected critical moments of apparent (dis)engagement. These moments served as prompts for the 15 individual semi-structured interviews we held. Interview data were analysed using Template Analysis style of thematic analysis. To guide the analysis, we used a framework that describes student engagement as a dynamic and multidimensional concept, consisting of behavioural, cognitive and emotional components.ResultsThe analysis uncovered three main findings: (1) In-class student engagement followed a spiral-like pattern. Once students were engaged or disengaged on one dimension, other dimensions were likely to follow suit. (2) Students' willingness to engage in class was decided before class, depending on their perception of a number of personal, social and educational antecedents of engagement. (3) Distinguishing engagement from disengagement appeared to be difficult for teachers, because the intention behind student behaviour was not always identifiable.DiscussionThis study adds to the literature by illuminating the dynamic process of student engagement and explaining the difficulty of recognising and influencing this process in practice. Based on the importance of discerning the intentions behind student behaviour, we advise teachers to use their observations of student (dis)engagement to initiate interaction with students with open and inviting prompts. This can help teachers to (re-)engage students in their classrooms.
