ABSTRACT: The data presented in this article are related to the research article entitled: "Electrochemical characterization of Raney nickel electrodes prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying for alkaline water electrolysis" (Kim et al., 2018). This article describes the characterization of raw Ni-Al alloy and Raney Ni powders via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and presents the EDS data of the prepared electrodes.

Separating hydrogen and oxygen evolution in alkaline water electrolysis using nickel hydroxide.

Project description:Low-cost alkaline water electrolysis has been considered a sustainable approach to producing hydrogen using renewable energy inputs, but preventing hydrogen/oxygen mixing and efficiently using the instable renewable energy are challenging. Here, using nickel hydroxide as a redox mediator, we decouple the hydrogen and oxygen production in alkaline water electrolysis, which overcomes the gas-mixing issue and may increase the use of renewable energy. In this architecture, the hydrogen production occurs at the cathode by water reduction, and the anodic Ni(OH)2 is simultaneously oxidized into NiOOH. The subsequent oxygen production involves a cathodic NiOOH reduction (NiOOH?Ni(OH)2) and an anodic OH(-) oxidization. Alternatively, the NiOOH formed during hydrogen production can be coupled with a zinc anode to form a NiOOH-Zn battery, and its discharge product (that is, Ni(OH)2) can be used to produce hydrogen again. This architecture brings a potential solution to facilitate renewables-to-hydrogen conversion.

Preparation of Practical High-Performance Electrodes for Acidic and Alkaline Media Water Electrolysis.

Project description:The synthesis of electrocatalyst and the electrode preparation were merged into a one-step process and proved to be a versatile method to synthesize metal oxide electrocatalysts on the conductive carbon paper (CP). Very simply, the metal precursor deposited on the CP was thermally treated by a torch-gun for just 6 s, resulting in the formation of RuO2 , Co3 O4 , and mixed oxide nanoparticles. The material could be directly used as working electrode for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Compared with commercial and other state-of-the-art electrocatalysts, the fabricated electrode showed a superior electrocatalytic activity for OER in 1 m HClO4 and 1 m KOH in terms of not only a low overpotential to reach 10 mA cm-2 but also a high current density at 1.6 VRHE with satisfying a long-term stability. The novel strategy without requiring time-consuming and uneconomical steps could be expanded to the preparation of various metal oxides on conductive substrates towards diverse electrocatalytic applications.

Role of water structure in alkaline water electrolysis.

Project description:Herein, with the help of experimental and first-principles density functional theory (DFT)-based studies, we have shown that structural changes in the water coordination in electrolytes having high alkalinity can be a possible reason for the reduced catalytic activity of platinum (Pt) in high pH. Studies with polycrystalline Pt electrodes indicate that electrocatalytic HER activity reduces in terms of high overpotential required, high Tafel slope, and high charge transfer resistances in concentrated aqueous alkaline electrolytes (say 6 M KOH) in comparison to that in low alkaline electrolytes (say 0.1 M KOH), irrespective of the counter cations (Na+, K+, or Rb+) present. The changes in the water structure of bulk electrolytes as well as that in electrode-electrolyte interface are studied. The results are compared with DFT-based analysis, and the study can pave new directions in studying the HER process in terms of the water structure near the electrode-electrolyte interface.

Antioxidant Activity Enhancement Effect of Silver-Ionized Water: Silver Cation Prepared by Electrolysis.

Project description:In the present study, tap water, alkaline electrolyzed water (AlEW) and tourmaline water (TMW) were used as the electrolytes to generated the silver-ionized water (SIW), AlEW-SIW and TMW-SIW, respectively. The antioxidant properties of the samples containing ascorbic acid (AsA) were investigated by WST-kit method. The results showed that the SOD activity of AsA (2 mmol/L) dissolved in SIW (66.0%) was enhanced by about 8% compared to that of the tap water (57.9%). The SOD activity of the AlEW-SIW solution (77.3%), which was higher than that of the SIW solution, and lower than that of the AlEW solution (83.6%). The SOD activity of the TMW-SIW solution (83.0%) was similar to that of the TMW solution (82.5%). Furthermore, to classify the sample solutions, discriminant analyses were performed based on near infrared (NIR) spectral data, which was consistent with the results of the WST-kit method. The SOD activity of the AlEW-SIW and TMW-SIW solutions decreased slowly with storage time, and their SOD activities were higher than that of AlEW, TMW and the tap water solutions at storage time of 14 days. In summary, AlEW-SIW and TMW-SIW showed similar antioxidant activity enhancement as AlEW and TMW, and they also maintained the stability of the antioxidant activity of AsA during storage.

Vapor-solid synthesis of monolithic single-crystalline CoP nanowire electrodes for efficient and robust water electrolysis.

Project description:Electrochemical water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen is a promising technology for sustainable energy storage. The development of earth-abundant transition metal phosphides (TMPs) to catalyze the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and TMP-derived oxy-hydroxides to catalyze the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has recently drawn considerable attention. However, most monolithically integrated metal phosphide electrodes are prepared by laborious multi-step methods and their operational stability at high current densities has been rarely studied. Herein, we report a novel vapor-solid synthesis of single-crystalline cobalt phosphide nanowires (CoP NWs) on a porous Co foam and demonstrate their use in overall water splitting. The CoP NWs grown on the entire surface of the porous Co foam ligaments have a large aspect ratio, and hence are able to provide a large catalytically accessible surface over a given geometrical area. Comprehensive investigation shows that under the OER conditions CoP NWs are progressively and conformally converted to CoOOH through electrochemical in situ oxidation/dephosphorization; the latter serving as an active species to catalyze the OER. The in situ oxidized electrode shows exceptional electrocatalytic performance for the OER in 1.0 M KOH, delivering 100 mA cm-2 at an overpotential (η) of merely 300 mV and a small Tafel slope of 78 mV dec-1 as well as excellent stability at various current densities. Meanwhile, the CoP NW electrode exhibits superior catalytic activity for the HER in the same electrolyte, affording -100 mA cm-2 at η = 244 mV and showing outstanding stability. An alkaline electrolyzer composed of two symmetrical CoP NW electrodes can deliver 10 and 100 mA cm-2 at low cell voltages of 1.56 and 1.78 V, respectively. The CoP NW electrolyzer demonstrates exceptional long-term stability for overall water splitting, capable of working at 20 and 100 mA cm-2 for 1000 h without obvious degradation.

Improving plasma sprayed Raney-type nickel-molybdenum electrodes towards high-performance hydrogen evolution in alkaline medium.

Project description:Rationally designed free-standing and binder-free Raney-type nickel-molybdenum (Ni-Mo) electrodes produced via atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) are developed by correlating APS process parameters with the microstructure of electrodes and their electrochemical performance in alkaline media. The results revealed that the electrode morphology and elemental composition are highly affected by the plasma parameters during the electrode fabrication. It is found that increasing plasma gas flow rate and input plasma power resulted in higher in-flight particle velocities and shorter dwell time, which in result delivered electrodes with much finer structure exhibiting homogeneous distribution of phases, larger quantity of micro pores and suitable content of Ni and Mo. Tafel slope of electrodes decreased with increasing the in-flight particles velocities from 71 to 33 mV dec-1 in 30 wt.% KOH. However, beyond a critical threshold in-flight velocity and temperature of particles, electrodes started to exhibit larger globular pores and consequently reduced catalytic performance and higher Tafel slop of 36 mV dec-1 in 30 wt.% KOH. Despite slightly lower electrochemical performance, the electrodes produced with highest plasma gas flow and energy showed most inter-particle bonded structure as well as highest stability with no measurable degradation over 47 days in operation as HER electrode in 30 wt.% KOH. The Raney-type Ni-Mo electrode fabricated at highest plasma gas flow rate and input plasma power has been tested as HER electrode in alkaline water electrolyzer, which delivered high current densities of 0.72 and 2 A cm-2 at 1.8 and 2.2 V, respectively, representing a novel prime example of HER electrode, which can synergistically catalyze the HER in alkaline electrolyzer. This study shows that sluggish alkaline HER can be circumvented by rational electrode composition and interface engineering.

Enhancing the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Activity of Platinum Electrodes in Alkaline Media Using Nickel-Iron Clusters.

Project description:Herein, we demonstrate an easy way to improve the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of Pt electrodes in alkaline media by introducing Ni-Fe clusters. As a result, the overpotential needed to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in H2 -saturated 0.1 m KOH is reduced for the model single-crystal electrodes down to about 70 mV. To our knowledge, these modified electrodes outperform any other reported electrocatalysts tested under similar conditions. Moreover, the influence of 1) Ni to Fe ratio, 2) cluster coverage, and 3) the nature of the alkali-metal cations present in the electrolyte on the HER activity has been investigated. The observed catalytic performance likely originates from both the improved water dissociation at the Ni-Fe clusters and the subsequent optimal hydrogen adsorption and recombination at Pt atoms present at the Ni-Fe/Pt boundary.

Photoenhanced Water Electrolysis in Separate O<sub>2</sub> and H<sub>2</sub> Cells Using Pseudocapacitive Electrodes.

Project description:Water electrolysis has received much attention in recent years as a means of sustainable H2 production. However, many challenges remain in obtaining high-purity H2 and making large-scale production cost-effective. This study provides a strategy for integrating a two-cell water electrolysis system with solar energy storage. In our proposed system, CuO-Cu(OH)2/Cu2O was used as a redox mediator between oxygen and hydrogen evolution components. The system not only overcame the gas-mixing issue but also showed high gas generation performance. The redox reaction (charge/discharge) of CuO-Cu(OH)2/Cu2O led to a significant increase (51%) in the initial rate of H2 production from 111.7 μmol h-1 cm-2 in the dark to 168.9 μmol h-1 cm-2 under solar irradiation. The effects of light on the redox reaction of CuO-Cu(OH)2/Cu2O during water electrolysis were investigated by in situ X-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy. These results suggest that surface oxygen vacancies are created under irradiation and play an important role in increased capacitance and gas generation. These findings provide a new path to direct storage of abundant solar energy and low-cost sustainable hydrogen production.

Highly energetic phenomena in water electrolysis.

Project description:Water electrolysis performed in microsystems with a fast change of voltage polarity produces optically invisible nanobubbles containing H2 and O2 gases. In this form the gases are able to the reverse reaction of water formation. Here we report extreme phenomena observed in a millimeter-sized open system. Under a frequency of driving pulses above 100?kHz the process is accompanied by clicking sounds repeated every 50?ms or so. Fast video reveals that synchronously with the click a bubble is growing between the electrodes which reaches a size of 300??m in 50??s. Detailed dynamics of the system is monitored by means of a vibrometer by observing a piece of silicon floating above the electrodes. The energy of a single event is estimated as 0.3??J and a significant part of this energy is transformed into mechanical work moving the piece. The observations are explained by the combustion of hydrogen and oxygen mixture in the initial bubble with a diameter of about 40??m. Unusual combustion mechanism supporting spontaneous ignition at room temperature is responsible for the process. The observed effect demonstrates a principal possibility to build a microscopic internal combustion engine.

Simultaneous, efficient and continuous oil-water separation via antagonistically functionalized membranes prepared by atmospheric-pressure cold plasma.

Project description:For decades, oil and water separation has remained a challenge. Not only oil spills but also industrial oily wastewaters are threatening our environment. Over the years, oil-water separation methods have been developed, however, there are still considerable hurdles to overcome to provide a low cost and efficient process able to treat a large amount of liquid. In this work, we suggest a continuous, simultaneous and effective oil-water separation method based on the antagonistic functionalization of meshes using atmospheric pressure cold plasmas. Using this robust plasma method, superhydrophobic/underwater-superoleophilic or superhydrophilic/underwater-superoleophobic functionalized meshes are obtained. Antagonistically functionalized meshes can simultaneously separate oil and water and show continuous separation flow rates of water (900 L m-2 h-1) and oil (400 L m-2 h-1) with high purities (> 99.9% v/v). This fast, low-cost and continuous plasma-based process can be readily and widely adopted for the selective functionalization of membranes at large scale for oil-spill cleanup and water purification.
