The Dead Man Test: a Preliminary Experimental Analysis.

ABSTRACT: Behavior analysts often invoke the "Dead Man Test" as a means of distinguishing behavior from other things, but the assumption underpinning this test, that behavior is absent in vitality-challenged individuals, lacks systematic empirical support. In a field experiment, three individuals who reasonably could be considered as deceased each were observed under three conditions in which behavior might have been observed. None was detected. These results are consistent with predictions derived from the Dead Man Test, although, due to limitations of the experiment, that foundational concept of behavioral measurement cannot yet be considered as validated.

Internet addiction test: Croatian preliminary study.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Everyday internet usage is particularly significant in the population of adolescents and young people. Besides numerous benefits, internet usage brings certain risks of addictive behavior. Internet Addiction Test (IAT) is the most spread scale for measuring internet addiction. The aim of this study was to investigate internet addiction on a sample of Croatian adolescents. METHODS:Overall, 352 students aged between 15 and 20 from randomly selected high schools participated in the study. We have collected the data on the Internet Addiction Test along with basic demographic information. The main analyses included the factorization of IAT test and the measurement of prevalence of internet addiction with the analysis of the gender differences. RESULTS:The results showed that 3.4% of high school students reported high levels of internet addiction, while 35.4% of respondents reported some signs of addiction. Three-factor structure of IAT was obtained with dimensions: Emotional and cognitive internet preoccupation, then Neglecting work and lack of self-control and the last one is Social problems. Although the first factor has the most significant role in internet addiction risk, gender differences were found only in the last two factors, where boys have higher scores on Social Problems, while girls have higher scores on Neglecting work and lack of self-control. CONCLUSIONS:Based on our results, the prevention activities should be focused on the area of ??emotional and social competence and the responsible use of internet. Since the result show that a third of the sample show moderate signs of addiction, programs of both indicated and selective prevention should be systematically planned for the general population of adolescents as well as for the groups in risk. The obtained gender differences indicate that the preventive and treatment programs should take into account gender specifics.

Is hunting nonintentionally selective? A test using game bird capture‐dead recoveries

Project description:Abstract Selective hunting has various impacts that need to be considered for the conservation and management of harvested populations. The consequences of selective harvest have mostly been studied in trophy hunting and fishing, where selection of specific phenotypes is intentional. Recent studies, however, show that selection can also occur unintentionally. With at least 52 million birds harvested each year in Europe, it is particularly relevant to evaluate the selectivity of hunting on this taxon. Here, we considered 211,806 individuals belonging to 7 hunted bird species to study unintentional selectivity in harvest. Using linear mixed models, we compared morphological traits (mass, wing, and tarsus size) and body condition at the time of banding between birds that were subsequently recovered from hunting during the same year as their banding, and birds that were not recovered. We did not find any patterns showing systematic differences between recovery categories, among our model species, for the traits we studied. Moreover, when a difference existed between recovery categories, it was so small that its biological relevance can be challenged. Hunting of birds in Europe therefore does not show any form of strong selectivity on the morphological and physiological traits that we studied and should hence not lead to any change of these traits either by plastic or by evolutionary response. In this study, we evaluated the potential unintentional selectivity of bird hunting in Europe on 7 species. Experimental test of nonlocal causality.

Project description:Explaining observations in terms of causes and effects is central to empirical science. However, correlations between entangled quantum particles seem to defy such an explanation. This implies that some of the fundamental assumptions of causal explanations have to give way. We consider a relaxation of one of these assumptions, Bell's local causality, by allowing outcome dependence: a direct causal influence between the outcomes of measurements of remote parties. We use interventional data from a photonic experiment to bound the strength of this causal influence in a two-party Bell scenario, and observational data from a Bell-type inequality test for the considered models. Our results demonstrate the incompatibility of quantum mechanics with a broad class of nonlocal causal models, which includes Bell-local models as a special case. Recovering a classical causal picture of quantum correlations thus requires an even more radical modification of our classical notion of cause and effect.

Experimental test of local observer independence.

Project description:The scientific method relies on facts, established through repeated measurements and agreed upon universally, independently of who observed them. In quantum mechanics the objectivity of observations is not so clear, most markedly exposed in Wigner's eponymous thought experiment where two observers can experience seemingly different realities. The question whether the observers' narratives can be reconciled has only recently been made accessible to empirical investigation, through recent no-go theorems that construct an extended Wigner's friend scenario with four observers. In a state-of-the-art six-photon experiment, we realize this extended Wigner's friend scenario, experimentally violating the associated Bell-type inequality by five standard deviations. If one holds fast to the assumptions of locality and free choice, this result implies that quantum theory should be interpreted in an observer-dependent way.

VPAC1 Targeted (64)Cu-TP3805 Positron Emission Tomography Imaging of Prostate Cancer: Preliminary Evaluation in Man.

Project description:To evaluate (64)Cu-TP3805 as a novel biomolecule, to positron emission tomography (PET) image prostate cancer (PC), at the onset of which VPAC1, the superfamily of G protein-coupled receptors, is expressed in high density on PC cells, but not on normal cells.Twenty-five patients undergoing radical prostatectomy were PET/X-ray computerized tomography imaged preoperatively with (64)Cu-TP3805. Standardized maximum uptake (SUVmax) values were determined and malignant lesions (standardized uptake value > 1.0) counted, and compared with histologic findings. Whole-mount pathology slides from 6 VPAC1 PET imaged patients, 3 benign prostatic hyperplasia patients, 1 malignant and 1 benign lymph node underwent digital autoradiography (DAR) after (64)Cu-TP3805 incubation and were compared to hematoxylin- and eosin-stained slides.In 25 patients who underwent PET imaging, 212 prostate gland lesions had SUVmax > 1.0 vs 127 lesions identified by histology of biopsy tissues. The status of the additional 85 PET identified prostate lesions remains to be determined. In 68 histologic slides from 6 PET imaged patients, DAR identified 105 of 107 PC foci, 19 of 19 high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasias, and ejaculatory ducts and verumontanum involved with cancer. Additionally, DAR found 9 PC lesions not previously identified histologically. The positive and negative lymph nodes were correctly identified, and in 3 of 3 benign prostatic hyperplasia patients and 5 of 5 cysts, DAR was negative.This feasibility study demonstrated that (64)Cu-TP3805 delineates PC in vivo and ex vivo, provided normal images for benign masses, and is worthy of further studies.

To test or not to test: Preliminary assessment of normality when comparing two independent samples.

Project description:BackgroundStudent's two-sample t test is generally used for comparing the means of two independent samples, for example, two treatment arms. Under the null hypothesis, the t test assumes that the two samples arise from the same normally distributed population with unknown variance. Adequate control of the Type I error requires that the normality assumption holds, which is often examined by means of a preliminary Shapiro-Wilk test. The following two-stage procedure is widely accepted: If the preliminary test for normality is not significant, the t test is used; if the preliminary test rejects the null hypothesis of normality, a nonparametric test is applied in the main analysis.MethodsEqually sized samples were drawn from exponential, uniform, and normal distributions. The two-sample t test was conducted if either both samples (Strategy I) or the collapsed set of residuals from both samples (Strategy II) had passed the preliminary Shapiro-Wilk test for normality; otherwise, Mann-Whitney's U test was conducted. By simulation, we separately estimated the conditional Type I error probabilities for the parametric and nonparametric part of the two-stage procedure. Finally, we assessed the overall Type I error rate and the power of the two-stage procedure as a whole.ResultsPreliminary testing for normality seriously altered the conditional Type I error rates of the subsequent main analysis for both parametric and nonparametric tests. We discuss possible explanations for the observed results, the most important one being the selection mechanism due to the preliminary test. Interestingly, the overall Type I error rate and power of the entire two-stage procedure remained within acceptable limits.ConclusionThe two-stage procedure might be considered incorrect from a formal perspective; nevertheless, in the investigated examples, this procedure seemed to satisfactorily maintain the nominal significance level and had acceptable power properties.

Cloning, purification, crystallization and preliminary X-ray crystallographic analysis of the N-terminal domain of DEAD-box RNA helicase from Staphylococcus aureus strain Mu50.

Project description:DEAD-box helicases are enzymes with an ATP-dependent RNA-unwinding function that are involved in a variety of cellular processes including RNA splicing, ribosome biogenesis and RNA degradation. In this study, the N-terminal domain of DEAD-box RNA helicase from Staphylococcus aureus strain Mu50 was overexpressed in Escherichia coli, purified and crystallized. Diffraction data were collected to 2.60?Å resolution using a synchrotron-radiation source. The crystal belonged to space group P1, with unit-cell parameters a=70.81, b=80.23, c=86.25?Å, ?=69.54, ?=66.54, ?=87.32°. The unit cell contained six molecules, with a corresponding VM of 2.91?Å3?Da(-1) and a solvent content of 56.1%.

Risk factors for colorectal cancer in man induce aberrant crypt foci in rats: Preliminary findings.

Project description:Epidemiological studies have demonstrated clear associations between specific dietary and environmental risk factors and incidence of colorectal cancer, but the mechanisms responsible for these associations are not known. An animal model could facilitate such an understanding. Both genotoxic and nongenotoxic carcinogens induce aberrant crypt foci (ACF) in the colons of F344 rats. F344 rats were provided with diets that contained putative risk factors for CRC: low calcium and low vitamin D, high iron, high fructose, and decreased light (UV) exposure or a control diet for 14 wk. The rats were then assessed with biochemical measures and by topological examination for evidence of colon abnormalities. Circulating ionized calcium was decreased from 2.85 to 1.69 mmol/L, and ACF were increased from 0.7 to 13.6 lesions/colon (both P < 0.001). Rats exposed to the multiple environmental conditions associated with colon cancer, developed ACF similar to the heterogeneous or ill-defined ACF in the human colon. Heterogeneous ACF are the most frequently seen in humans and are also seen in rats shortly after exposure to the non-genotoxic colon carcinogen, dextransulfate sodium. The rodent model could be used to assess the pathways from diet and environment to colon cancer and to provide guidance for clinical studies.

Splitting test experimental dataset of hollow concrete blocks.

Project description:Masonry structures are widely used nowadays for their advantages like low-cost workmanship, efficiency and fast construction techniques. The compressive strength of the materials that compose masonry (block and mortar) is very important to the behavior of the system, but the tensile strength is even more significant for the standards and building codes. In this work, a dataset for indirect tensile tests of hollow concrete blocks is obtained. Splitting tests as described in ASTM C-1006-13 are applied. Two sets of blocks were tested, one with medium compressive strength and the other with high compressive strength. The first set was tested in three directions named A, B, and C; the second one was tested in two directions, A and B. The data was collected with a servo-hydraulic machine. The data is presented in tables and can be used by material researchers, as well as in numerical modeling.
