Hydrogen-bonding chain and dimer motifs in pyridinium and morpholinium hydrogen oxalate salts.

ABSTRACT: We present here three compounds consisting of pyridinium or morpholinium hydrogen oxalates, each displaying different hydrogen-bonding motifs, resulting in chains for 4-(dimethylamino)pyridinium hydrogen oxalate 0.22-hydrate, C7H11N2 +·C2HO4 ?·0.22H2O (1), dimers for 4-tert-butylpyridinium hydrogen oxalate, C9H14N+·C2HO4 ? (2), and chains for morpholinium hydrogen oxalate, C4H10NO+·C2HO4 ? (3).

Project description:In the non-centrosymetric title compound, C(5)H(6)N(3)O(2) (+)·C(2)HO(4) (-), the hydrogen oxalate anions form corrugated chains parallel to the c axis, linked by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The 2-amino-3-nitro-pyridinium cations are anchored between theses chains by N-H⋯O and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds and van der Waals and electrostatic inter-actions, creating a three-dimensional network.

Project description:In the cation of the title mol-ecular salt, C5H6N3O2 (+)·C2HO4 (-), the dihedral angle between the aromatic ring and the nitro group is 3.5 (3)°; in the anion, the dihedral angle between the CO2 and CO2H planes is 10.5 (2)°. In the crystal, the anions are linked into [100] chains by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The cations cross-link the chains by way of N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds and the structure is consolidated by C-H⋯O inter-actions.

Project description:In the title compound, 2C(5)H(7)N(2) (+)·2C(2)HO(4) (-)·H(2)O, the asymmetric unit consists of an amino-pyridinium cation, an oxalic actetate anion and a half-molecule of water, which lies on a two-fold rotation axis. The crystal packing is consolidated by inter-molecular O-H⋯O, N-H⋯O and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The mol-ecules are linked into an infinite one dimensional chain along [010].

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, 2C(5)H(8)N(3) (+)·2C(2)HO(4) (-)·H(2)O, contains two crystallographically independent 2,6-diamino-pyridinium cations, a pair of hydrogen oxalate anions and a water mol-ecule. Both 2,6-diamino-pyridinium cations are planar, with maximum deviations of 0.011 (2) and 0.015 (1) Å, and are protonated at the pyridine N atoms. The hydrogen oxalate anions adopt twisted conformations and the dihedral angles between the planes of their carboxyl groups are 31.01 (11) and 63.48 (11)°. In the crystal, the cations, anions and water mol-ecules are linked via O-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional network.

Supramolecular Self-Sorting Networks using Hydrogen-Bonding Motifs.

Project description:A current objective in supramolecular chemistry is to mimic the transitions between complex self-sorted systems that represent a hallmark of regulatory function in nature. In this work, a self-sorting network, comprising linear hydrogen motifs, was created. Selecting six hydrogen-bonding motifs capable of both high-fidelity and promiscuous molecular recognition gave rise to a complex self-sorting system, which included motifs capable of both narcissistic and social self-sorting. Examination of the interactions between individual components, experimentally and computationally, provided a rationale for the product distribution during each phase of a cascade. This reasoning holds through up to five sequential additions of six building blocks, resulting in the construction of a biomimetic network in which the presence or absence of different components provides multiple unique pathways to distinct self-sorted configurations.

Evidence for C-H hydrogen bonding in salts of tert-butyl cation.

Project description:Environmentally sensitive: A combination of C-H anion hydrogen bonding and hyperconjugative charge delocalization explains the sensitivity of the IR spectrum of the tert-butyl cation to its anion (see high-resolution X-ray structure with a CHB(11)Cl(11)(-) counterion). The ?CH vibration of the cation scales linearly with the basicity of carborane anions on the ?NH scale. The same also holds for the C(6)H(7)(+) benzenium ion.

Hydrogen Bonding and Polymorphism of Amino Alcohol Salts with Quinaldinate: Structural Study.

Project description:Three amino alcohols, 3-amino-1-propanol (abbreviated as 3a1pOH), 2-amino-1-butanol (2a1bOH), and 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (2a2m1pOH), were reacted with quinoline-2-carboxylic acid, known as quinaldinic acid. This combination yielded three salts, (3a1pOHH)quin (1, 3a1pOHH+ = protonated 3-amino-1-propanol, quin- = anion of quinaldinic acid), (2a1bOHH)quin (2, 2a1bOHH+ = protonated 2-amino-1-butanol), and (2a2m1pOHH)quin (3, 2a2m1pOHH+ = protonated 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol). The 2-amino-1-butanol and 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol systems produced two polymorphs each, labeled 2a/2b and 3a/3b, respectively. The compounds were characterized by X-ray structure analysis on single-crystal. The crystal structures of all consisted of protonated amino alcohols with NH3+ moiety and quinaldinate anions with carboxylate moiety. The used amino alcohols contained one OH and one NH2 functional group, both prone to participate in hydrogen bonding. Therefore, similar connectivity patterns were expected. This proved to be true to some extent as all structures contained the NH3+∙∙∙-OOC heterosynthon. Nevertheless, different hydrogen bonding and π∙∙∙π stacking interactions were observed, leading to distinct connectivity motifs. The largest difference in hydrogen bonding occurred between polymorphs 3a and 3b, as they had only one heterosynton in common.

Characterization of hydrogen bonding motifs in proteins: hydrogen elimination monitoring by ultraviolet photodissociation mass spectrometry.

Project description:Determination of structure and folding of certain classes of proteins remains intractable by conventional structural characterization strategies and has spurred the development of alternative methodologies. Mass spectrometry-based approaches have a unique capacity to differentiate protein heterogeneity due to the ability to discriminate populations, whether minor or major, featuring modifications or complexation with non-covalent ligands on the basis of m/z. Cleavage of the peptide backbone can be further utilized to obtain residue-specific structural information. Here, hydrogen elimination monitoring (HEM) upon ultraviolet photodissociation (UVPD) of proteins transferred to the gas phase via nativespray ionization is introduced as an innovative approach to deduce backbone hydrogen bonding patterns. Using well-characterized peptides and a series of proteins, prediction of the engagement of the amide carbonyl oxygen of the protein backbone in hydrogen bonding using UVPD-HEM is demonstrated to show significant agreement with the hydrogen-bonding motifs derived from molecular dynamics simulations and X-ray crystal structures.

On the Hydrogen Oxalate Binding Motifs onto Dinuclear Cu and Ag Metal Phosphine Complexes.

Project description:We report the binding geometries of the isomers that are formed when the hydrogen oxalate ((CO2 )2 H=HOx) anion attaches to dinuclear coinage metal phosphine complexes of the form [M1 M2 dcpm2 (HOx)]+ with M=Cu, Ag and dcpm=bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)methane, abbreviated [MM]+ . These structures are established by comparison of isomer-selective experimental vibrational band patterns displayed by the cryogenically cooled and N2 -tagged cations with DFT calculations of the predicted spectra for various local minima. Two isomeric classes are identified that feature either attachment of the carboxylate oxygen atoms to the two metal centers (end-on docking) or attachment of oxygen atoms on different carbon atoms asymmetrically to the metal ions (side-on docking). Within each class, there are additional isomeric variations according to the orientation of the OH group. This behavior indicates that HOx undergoes strong and directional coordination to [CuCu]+ but adopts a more flexible coordination to [AgAg]+ . Infrared spectra of the bare ions, fragmentation thresholds and ion mobility measurements are reported to explore the behaviors of the complexes at ambient temperature.
