Microarray-based technologies for the discovery of selective, RNA-binding molecules.

ABSTRACT: The identification of small molecules that bind specifically to RNA is a challenge. However, the recent explosion in knowledge about the role RNA plays in a number of physiological processes apart from coding for protein sequences makes it a highly interesting target for chemical probes and therapeutics. One technology that has played an important role in the discovery of RNA-binding molecules is microarrays. Microarrays have been broadly employed to screen, profile, and quantify RNA interactions, and will likely play an important role in the discovery of new classes of ligands going forward. Here, we discuss the development of microarray technologies, including aminoglycoside, peptide, peptoid, and small molecule microarrays, and their use in studying RNA-interacting molecules.
