Crystal structure of a second monoclinic polymorph of 3-meth-oxy-benzoic acid with Z' = 1.

ABSTRACT: A new polymorphic form of the title compound, C8H8O3, is described in the centrosymmetric monoclinic space group P21/c with Z' = 1 as compared to the first polymorph, which crystallizes with two conformers (Z' = 2) in the asymmetric unit in the same space group. In the crystal of the second polymorph, inversion dimers linked by O-H?O hydrogen bonds occur and these are linked into zigzag chains, propagating along the b-axis direction by C-H?O links. The crystal structure also features a weak ?-? inter-action, with a centroid-to-centroid distance of 3.8018?(6)?Å. The second polymorph of the title compound is less stable than the reported first polymorph, as indicated by its smaller calculated lattice energy.

Project description:Recently, we reported the first monoclinic [Kuai & Cheng (2011). Acta Cryst., E67, o2787] and the ortho-rhom-bic polymorph [Kuai & Cheng (2011). Acta Cryst., E67, o3014] of the title compound, C(15)H(12)N(2)O(2). Another monoclinic polymorph was obtained accidentally by the hydro-thermal reaction of the title compound with manganese chloride in the presence of potassium hydroxide at 413 K. The asymmetric unit consists of four independent mol-ecules. In the crystal, O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds link the independent mol-ecules into four separate chains parallel to the b axis.

Crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of a third polymorph of 2,6-di-meth-oxy-benzoic acid.

Project description:A third crystalline form of the title compound, C9H10O4, crystallizing in the centrosymmetric monoclinic space group P21/c, has been identified during screening for co-crystals. The asymmetric unit comprises a non-planar independent mol-ecule with a synplanar conformation of the OH group. The sterically bulky o-meth-oxy substituents force the carb-oxy group to be twisted away from the plane of the benzene ring by 74.10 (6)°. The carb-oxy group exhibits the acidic H atom disordered over two sites between two O atoms. A similar situation has been found for the second tetra-gonal polymorph reported [Portalone (2011 ▸). Acta Cryst. E67, o3394-o3395], in which mol-ecules with the OH group in a synplanar conformation form dimeric units via strong O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. In contrast, in the first ortho-rhom-bic form reported [Swaminathan et al. (1976 ▸). Acta Cryst. B32, 1897-1900; Bryan & White (1982 ▸). Acta Cryst. B38, 1014-1016; Portalone (2009 ▸). Acta Cryst. E65, o327-o328], the mol-ecular components do not form conventional dimeric units, as an anti-planar conformation adopted by the OH group favors the association of mol-ecules in chains stabilized by linear O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

Monoclinic polymorph of 4-[(1H-benz-imidazol-1-yl)meth-yl]benzoic acid.

Project description:Three polymorphs of the title compound, C(15)H(12)N(2)O(2), were obtained accidentally as single crystals in the hydro-thermal reaction of the title compound with manganese bromide in the presence of N,N'-dimethyl-formamide at 373?K. Here we report the structure of the first polymorph. The benzimidazole ring is almost planar, the maximum deviation from the mean plane being 0.016?(1)?Å. The benzimidazole and benzene rings are approximately perpendicular, making a dihedral angle 85.56?(7)°, which is a reflection of the axial rotation of the flexible benzimidazolyl arm. In the crystal, adjacent mol-ecules are connected through O-H?N hydrogen bonds into a chain along [100], and neighboring chains are further linked by via weak C-H?O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions, forming a two-dimensional network.

A second monoclinic polymorph for 3-amino-1-(4-meth-oxy-phen-yl)-9,10-dihydro-phenanthrene-2,4-dicarbonitrile.

Project description:The title compound, C(23)H(17)N(3)O, has been previously described in a monoclinic P2(1)/c polymorph with Z = 4 [Asiri, Al-Youbi, Faidallah, Ng & Tiekink (2011). Acta Cryst. E67, o2449]. In the new monoclinic P2(1)/n form, with Z = 8, there are two independent mol-ecules, A and B, in the asymmetric unit. In both mol-ecules, the cyclo-hexa-1,3-diene ring has a screw-boat conformation, whereas it is a distorted half-chair in the original polymorph. There is a fold in each mol-ecule, as indicated by the dihedral angle between the benzene rings of the 1,2-dihydro-naphthalene and aniline residues of 33.19?(10)° (mol-ecule A) and 30.6?(10)° (mol-ecule B). The meth-oxy-benzene ring is twisted out of the plane of the aniline residue to which it is connected [dihedral angles = 49.22?(10) and 73.27?(10)°, in A and B respectively]. In the crystal, the two independent mol-ecules self-associate via N-H?N hydrogen bonds, generating a 12-membered {?HNC(3)N}(2) synthon. These are connected into a supra-molecular tape in the (-101) plane by N-H?O(meth-oxy) inter-actions. In the P2(1)/c polymorph, supra-molecular layers are formed by N-H?N and N-H?O inter-actions.

A third monoclinic polymorph of 3,4,5-trihy-droxy-benzoic acid monohydrate.

Project description:The title compound, C(7)H(6)O(5)·H(2)O, is a new polymorph of the structures reported by Jiang et al. (2000 ?) [Acta Cryst. C56, 594-595] and Okabe et al. (2001 ?) [Acta Cryst. E57, o764-o766]. The gallic acid mol-ecule is essentially planar (r.m.s. deviation = 0.550?Å). An intra-molecular O-H?O hydrogen bond occurs in the gallic acid mol-ecule, which is linked to the water mol-ecule by a further O-H?O hydrogen bond. In the crystal, the components are linked by O-H?O hydrogen bonds. The hydrogen-bonding pattern differs from those reported for the previous polymorphs.

Project description:In the crystal of the title vanilline derivative, 2C15H15NO4·H2O, the secondary amine mol-ecule is accompanied by half equivalent of water. The mol-ecule is non-planar, with torsion angle Car-yl-CH2-NH-Car-yl of -83.9?(2)°. In the crystal, the system of O-H?O hydrogen bonds, including bridging water mol-ecules residing on crystallographic twofold axes, results in a two-dimensional layered structure. Within the layers, there are also weak N-H?? inter-actions involving the vanilline benzene ring.

Project description:The title compound, C(22)H(18)N(2)O(3) is the second monoclinic polymorph (P2(1)/c) of the compound, the first being reported in space group P2(1) [Bertolasi et al. (1993 ▶). J. Chem. Soc. Perkin Trans. 2, pp. 2223-2228]. In the mol-ecular structure of the title compound, the inter-planar angle between the benzoyl units is 80.04 (5)°, while the corresponding angles between the phenyl-hydrazinyl-idene and benzoyl groups are 36.11 (5) and 55.77 (2)°. A strong resonance-assisted intra-molecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bond is found. In the crystal, the entire supra-molecular structure is constructed by weak inter-molecular C-H⋯O inter-actions and an inter-ring π-π inter-action [centroid-centroid distance = 3.6088 (8) Å].

Project description:The title compounds, C10H11BrO4, (I), and C9H9BrO4, (II), are derivatives of bromo-hy-droxy-benzoic acids. Compound (II) crystallizes with two independent mol-ecules (A and B) in the asymmetric unit. In both (I) and (II), the O-CH2-O-CH3 side chain is not in its fully extended conformation; the O-C-O-C torsion angle is 67.3 (3) ° in (I), and -65.8 (3) and -74.1 (3)° in mol-ecules A and B, respectively, in compound (II). In the crystal of (I), mol-ecules are linked by C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming C(5) chains along [010]. The chains are linked by short Br⋯O contacts [3.047 (2) Å], forming sheets parallel to the bc plane. The sheets are linked via C-H⋯π inter-actions, forming a three-dimensional architecture. In the crystal of (II), mol-ecules A and B are linked to form R 2 (2)(8) dimers via two strong O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. These dimers are linked into ⋯A-B⋯A-B⋯A-B⋯ [C 2 (2)(15)] chains along [011] by C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The chains are linked by slipped parallel π-π inter-actions [inter-centroid distances = 3.6787 (18) and 3.8431 (17) Å], leading to the formation of slabs parallel to the bc plane.

Project description:Crystals of the title compound, C(16)H(12)N(2)O(4), were obtained accidentally by the hydro-thermal reaction of 5-[(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)meth-yl]isophthalic acid with manganese chloride tetra-hydrate in the presence of KOH as alkaline reagent for the deprotonation. A triclinic polymorph of this structure has been reported previously from a similar reaction [Cheng (2011 ?). Acta Cryst. E67, o3299]. The benzimidazole ring system is almost planar, with a maximum deviation from the mean plane of 0.020?(4)?Å. The benzimidazole unit and benzene ring are inclined at a dihedral angle of 68.17?(4)°, reflecting the axial rotation of the flexible benzimidazolyl arm. In the crystal, pairs of O-H?O hydrogen bonds link adjacent mol-ecules into inversion dimers. O-H?N contacts connect these dimers into zigzag chains along [010].
