Innovation to Dissemination Workshop: Selecting Outcome Measures to Translate Educational Innovations Into Scholarship.

ABSTRACT: Introduction:Curricular innovations are invaluable to the improvement of medical education programs, and thus, their dissemination to broader audiences is imperative. However, medical educators often struggle to translate innovative ideas into scholarly pursuits due to a lack of experience or expertise in selecting outcome measures that demonstrate impact. A recent national call for increased focus on outcome measures for medical education research highlights the need for more training in this area. Methods:We developed a 2-hour interactive workshop to improve educator ability to identify outcome measures for educational innovations. This workshop was delivered at a national pediatrics educational conference and at three local institutional faculty development sessions. Results:Participants were diverse in terms of experience, expertise, and roles within their educational programs. Participants rated the workshop positively in each setting and identified next steps in developing their own products of educational scholarship. Discussion:This workshop can provide faculty and faculty developers with a template for developing a skill set in identifying outcome measures and pairing them with educational innovations.

Project description:The purpose of this article is to describe the design of a unique, bilingual (English and French) Master of Applied Sciences (M.Sc.) in Anatomical Sciences Education (ASE) program at a Canadian postsecondary institution. Anatomy is a core foundational discipline that is essential to many undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs in the health sciences. However, the number of new individuals with the necessary knowledge base and the pedagogical training to teach cadaveric anatomy are in short supply and cannot satisfy the number of openings for trained educators in the field. The M.Sc. in ASE was created to meet the increasingly critical need for instructors trained in human anatomy. The program is designed to prepare students for a career teaching human anatomy to students in the health sciences, emphasizing hands-on cadaveric dissection. Moreover, this program aims to develop educational scholarship skills in trainees by leveraging faculty expertise in medical education research, particularly in the field of anatomy education research. This focus on scholarships will make graduates more competitive for future faculty positions. During their first year of the program, learners will develop clinically relevant anatomy knowledge, teaching skills, and anatomy education scholarship. In the second year, students will benefit from an immediate, hands-on application of this acquired knowledge. In the same year, students will serve as anatomy teachers in the faculty's Medical Program and conduct their education scholarship projects, culminating in a formal research paper. Although similar programs have been developed in recent years, this article provides the first description of the creation of a graduate program in anatomy education. It includes needs assessment, program development, challenges faced, and lessons learned during the approval process. The article serves as a valuable resource for other institutions aspiring to develop similar initiatives.

Project description:BackgroundTwo of the current methodological barriers to implementation science efforts are the lack of agreement regarding constructs hypothesized to affect implementation success and identifiable measures of these constructs. In order to address these gaps, the main goals of this paper were to identify a multi-level framework that captures the predominant factors that impact implementation outcomes, conduct a systematic review of available measures assessing constructs subsumed within these primary factors, and determine the criterion validity of these measures in the search articles.MethodWe conducted a systematic literature review to identify articles reporting the use or development of measures designed to assess constructs that predict the implementation of evidence-based health innovations. Articles published through 12 August 2012 were identified through MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO and the journal Implementation Science. We then utilized a modified five-factor framework in order to code whether each measure contained items that assess constructs representing structural, organizational, provider, patient, and innovation level factors. Further, we coded the criterion validity of each measure within the search articles obtained.ResultsOur review identified 62 measures. Results indicate that organization, provider, and innovation-level constructs have the greatest number of measures available for use, whereas structural and patient-level constructs have the least. Additionally, relatively few measures demonstrated criterion validity, or reliable association with an implementation outcome (e.g., fidelity).DiscussionIn light of these findings, our discussion centers on strategies that researchers can utilize in order to identify, adapt, and improve extant measures for use in their own implementation research. In total, our literature review and resulting measures compendium increases the capacity of researchers to conceptualize and measure implementation-related constructs in their ongoing and future research.

Project description:New models of primary care include patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) to promote patient-centered care. PROMs provide information on patient functional status and well-being, can be used to enhance care quality, and are proposed for use in assessing performance. Our objective was to identify a short list of candidate PROMs for use in primary care practice and to serve as a basis for performance measures (PMs). We used qualitative and quantitative methods to identify relevant patient-reported outcome (PRO) domains for use in performance measurement (PRO-PM) and their associated PROMs. We collected data from key informant groups: patients (n = 13; one-on-one and group interviews; concept saturation analysis), clinical thought leaders (n = 9; group discussions; thematic analysis), primary care practices representatives (n = 37; six focus groups; thematic analysis), and primary care payer representatives (n = 10; 12-question survey; frequencies of responses). We merged the key informant group information with findings from environmental literature scans. We conducted a targeted evidence review of measurement properties for candidate PROMs. We used a scoping review and key informant groups to identify PROM evaluation criteria, which were linked to the National Quality Forum measure evaluation criteria. We developed a de novo schema to score candidate PROMs against our criteria. We identified four PRO domains and 10 candidate PROMs: 3 for depressive symptoms, 2 for physical function, 3 for self-efficacy, 2 for ability to participate. Five PROMs met ≥ 70% of the evidence criteria for three PRO domains: PHQ-9 or PROMIS Depression (depression), PF-10 or PROMIS-PF (physical functioning), and PROMIS Self-Efficacy for Managing Treatments and Medications (self-efficacy). The PROMIS Ability to Participate in Social Roles and Activities met 68% of our criteria and might be considered for inclusion. Existing evidence and key informant data identified 5 candidate PROMs to use in primary care. These instruments can be used to develop PRO-PMs.
