Custom Design of Packaging through Advanced Technologies: A Case Study Applied to Apples.

ABSTRACT: In the context of food packaging design, customization enhances the value of a product by meeting consumer needs. Personalization is also linked to adaptation, so the properties of the packaging can be improved from several points of view: functional, aesthetic, economic and ecological. Currently, functional and formal properties of packaging are not investigated in depth. However, the study of both properties is the basis for creating a new concept of personalized and sustainable product. In accordance with this approach, a conceptual design procedure of packaging with personalized and adapted geometries based on the digitization of fresh food is proposed in this work. This study is based on the application of advanced technologies for the design and development of food packaging, apples in this work, in order to improve the quality of the packaging. The results obtained show that it is possible to use advanced technologies in the early stages of product design in order to obtain competitive products adapted to new emerging needs.

Project description:Ischemia occurs when blood flow is reduced or restricted, leading to a lack of oxygen and nutrient supply and removal of metabolites in a body part. Critical limb ischemia (CLI) is a severe clinical manifestation of peripheral arterial disease. Atherosclerosis serves as the main cause of CLI, which arises from the deposition of lipids in the artery wall, forming atheroma and causing inflammation. Although several therapies exist for the treatment of CLI, pharmacotherapy still has low efficacy, and vascular surgery often cannot be performed due to the pathophysiological heterogeneity of each patient. Gene and cell therapies have emerged as alternative treatments for the treatment of CLI by promoting angiogenesis. However, the delivery of autologous, heterologous or genetically modified cells into the ischemic tissue remains challenging, as these cells can die at the injection site and/or leak into other tissues. The encapsulation of these cells within hydrogels for local delivery is probably one of the promising options today. Hydrogels, three-dimensional (3D) cross-linked polymer networks, enable manipulation of physical and chemical properties to mimic the extracellular matrix. Thus, specific biostructures can be developed by adjusting prepolymer properties and encapsulation process variables, such as viscosity and flow rate of fluids, depending on the final biomedical application. Electrostatic droplet extrusion, micromolding, microfluidics, and 3D printing have been the most commonly used technologies for cell encapsulation due to their versatility in producing different hydrogel-based systems (e.g., microgels, fibers, vascularized architectures and perfusable single vessels) with great potential to treat ischemic diseases. This review discusses the cell encapsulation technologies associated with hydrogels which are currently used for advanced therapies applied to limb ischemia, describing their principles, advantages, disadvantages, potentials, and innovative therapeutic ideas.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Positive psychological interventions for children have typically focused on direct adaptations of interventions developed for adults. As the community moves toward designing positive computing technologies to support child well-being, it is important to use a more participatory process that directly engages children's voices. OBJECTIVE:Our objectives were, through a participatory design study, to understand children's interpretations of positive psychology concepts, as well as their perspectives on technologies that are best suited to enhance their engagement with practice of well-being skills. METHODS:We addressed these questions through a content analysis of 434 design ideas, 51 sketches, and 8 prototype and videos, which emerged from a 14-session cooperative inquiry study with 12 child "happiness inventors." The study was part of a summer learning camp held at the children's middle school, which focused on teaching the invention process, teaching well-being skills drawn from positive psychology and related areas (gratitude, mindfulness, and problem solving), and iterating design ideas for technologies to support these skills. RESULTS:The children's ideas and prototypes revealed specific facets of how they interpreted gratitude (as thanking, being positive, and doing good things), mindfulness (as externally representing thought and emotions, controlling those thoughts and emotions, getting through unpleasant things, and avoiding forgetting something), and problem solving (as preventing bad decisions, seeking alternative solutions, and not dwelling on unproductive thoughts). This process also revealed that children emphasized particular technologies in their solutions. While desktop or laptop solutions were notably lacking, other ideas were roughly evenly distributed between mobile apps and embodied computing technologies (toys, wearables, etc). We also report on desired functionalities and approaches to engagement in the children's ideas, such as a notable emphasis on representing and responding to internal states. CONCLUSIONS:Our findings point to promising directions for the design of positive computing technologies targeted at children, with particular emphases on the perspectives, technologies, engagement approaches, and functionalities that appealed to the children in our study. The dual focus of the study on teaching skills while designing technologies is a novel methodology in the design of positive computing technologies intended to increase child well-being.

Project description:OBJECTIVE:Health information technology could provide valuable support for inter-professional collaboration to address complex health issues, but current HIT systems do not adequately support such collaboration. Existing theoretical research on supporting collaborative work can help inform the design of collaborative HIT systems. Using the example of supporting collaboration between child development service providers, we describe a deductive approach that leverages concepts from the literature and analyzes qualitative user-needs data to aid in collaborative system design. MATERIALS AND METHODS:We use the Collaboration Space Model to guide the deductive qualitative analysis of interviews focused on the use of information technology to support child development. We deductively analyzed 44 interviews from two separate research initiatives and included data from a wide range of stakeholder groups including parents and various service providers. We summarized the deductively coded interview excerpts using quantitative and qualitative methods. RESULTS:The deductive analysis method provided a rich set of design data, highlighting heterogeneity in work processes, barriers to adequate communication, and gaps in stakeholder knowledge in supporting child development work. DISCUSSION:Deductive qualitative analysis considering constructs from a literature-based model provided useful, actionable data to aid in design. Design implications underscore functions needed to adequately share data across many stakeholders. More work is needed to validate our design implications and to better understand the situations where specific system features would be most useful. CONCLUSIONS:Deductive analysis considering model constructs provides a useful approach to designing collaborative HIT systems, allowing designers to consider both empirical user data and existing knowledge from the literature. This method has the potential to improve designs for collaborative HIT systems.
