Enlightenment beats prejudice: The reversibility of stereotype-induced memory distortion.

ABSTRACT: Social stereotypes impact how we remember people, but how stable is this influence? Inspired by the reversibility of the eyewitness misinformation effect through postwarnings about the planting of misinformation ('enlightenment'), we explored if stereotype influence on person memory can be similarly reversed. Participants read person self-descriptions and subsequently answered memory test questions either with or without stereotype labels, establishing sizeable stereotype-induced memory distortion. One week later, the participants answered the same questions again, but half were enlightened about the earlier stereotype manipulation. This eliminated the stereotype effect and restored memory for the original information, whereas memory remained distorted without enlightenment. We discuss implications for memory distortion research and for (undermining) the self-perpetuation of stereotypes in society.

Motion-induced distortion of shape.

Project description:Motion, position, and form are intricately intertwined in perception. Motion distorts visual space, resulting in illusory position shifts such as flash-drag and flash-grab effects. The flash-grab displaces a test by up to several times its size. This lets us use it to investigate where the motion-induced shift operates in the processing stream from photoreceptor activation to feature activation to object recognition. We present several canonical, highly familiar forms and ask whether the motion-induced shift operates uniformly across the form. If it did, we could conclude that the effect occurred after the elements of the form are bound. However, we find that motion-induced distortion affects not only the position, but also the appearance of briefly presented, canonical shapes (square, circle, and letter T). Features of the flashed target that were closest to its center were shifted in the direction of motion more than those further from its center. Outline shapes were affected more than filled shapes, and the strength of the distortion increased with the contrast of the moving background. This not only supports a nonuniform spatial profile for the motion-induced shift but also indicates that the shift operates before the shape is established, even for highly familiar shapes like squares, circles, and letters.

How Does Gender Stereotype Affect the Memory of Advertisements? A Behavioral and Electroencephalography Study.

Project description:Previous studies have shown equivocal results about whether atypical or unusual events, compared with typical ones, facilitate or inhibit memory. We suspect that the indefinite findings could be partly due to the recall task used in these studies, as the participants might have used inference instead of recall in their responses. In the present study, we tested the recognition memory for real (Experiment 1) and fabricated (Experiment 2) advertisements, which could be congruent or incongruent with gender stereotypes. In congruent advertisements, a female endorser presented a traditionally considered feminine product or a male endorser presented a traditionally considered masculine product, whereas the gender-product type matching reversed in incongruent advertisements. The results of both behavioral experiments revealed that the participants' memory performance for stereotype-incongruent advertisements was higher than for congruent ones. In the event-related potential (ERP) recordings in Experiment 3, larger positive amplitudes were found for stereotype-incongruent advertisements than for congruent advertisements on the left parietal sites, suggesting a deeper encoding process for stereotype-incongruent information than for stereotype-congruent information.

Silicon-induced reversibility of cadmium toxicity in rice.

Project description:Silicon (Si) modulates tolerance to abiotic stresses, but little is known about the reversibility of stress effects by supplementing previously stressed plants with Si. This is surprising since recovery experiments might allow mechanisms of Si-mediated amelioration to be addressed. Rice was exposed to 10 µM CdCl2 for 4 d in hydroponics, followed by 0.6mM Si(OH)4 supplementation for 4 d. Si reversed the effects of Cd, as reflected in plant growth, photosynthesis, elemental composition, and some biochemical parameters. Cd-dependent deregulation of nutrient homeostasis was partially reversed by Si supply. Photosynthetic recovery within 48h following Si supply, coupled with strong stimulation of the ascorbate-glutathione system, indicates efficient activation of defense. The response was further verified by transcript analyses with emphasis on genes encoding members of the stress-associated protein (SAP) family. The transcriptional response to Cd was mostly reversed following Si supply. Reprogramming of the Cd response was obvious for Phytochelatin synthase 1, SAP1 , SAP14, and the transcription factor genes AP2/Erf020, Hsf31, and NAC6 whose transcript levels were strongly activated in roots of Cd-stressed rice, but down-regulated in the presence of Si. These findings, together with changes in biochemical parameters, highlight the significance of Si in growth recovery of Cd-stressed rice and indicate a decisive role for readjusting cell redox homeostasis.

Stereotype-based priming without stereotype activation: A tale of two priming tasks.

Project description:An extensive literature has demonstrated stereotype-based priming effects. What this work has only recently considered, however, is the extent to which priming is moderated by the adoption of different sequential-priming tasks and the attendant implications for theoretical treatments of person perception. In addition, the processes through which priming arises (i.e., stimulus and/or response biases) remain largely unspecified. Accordingly, here we explored the emergence and origin of stereotype-based priming using both semantic- and response-priming tasks. Corroborating previous research, a stereotype-based priming effect only emerged when a response-priming (vs. semantic-priming) task was used. A further hierarchical drift diffusion model analysis revealed that this effect was underpinned by differences in the evidential requirements of response generation (i.e., a response bias), such that less evidence was needed when generating stereotype-consistent compared with stereotype-inconsistent responses. Crucially, information uptake (i.e., stimulus bias, efficiency of target processing) was faster for stereotype-inconsistent than stereotype-consistent targets. This reveals that stereotype-based priming originated in a response bias rather than the automatic activation of stereotypes. The theoretical implications of these findings are considered.

Non-linear Functional Brain Co-activations in Short-Term Memory Distortion Tasks.

Project description:Recent works shed light on the neural correlates of true and false recognition and the influence of time of day on cognitive performance. The current study aimed to investigate the modulation of the false memory formation by the time of day using a non-linear correlation analysis originally designed for fMRI resting-state data. Fifty-four young and healthy participants (32 females, mean age: 24.17 ± 3.56 y.o.) performed in MR scanner the modified Deese-Roediger-McDermott paradigm in short-term memory during one session in the morning and another in the evening. Subjects' responses were modeled with a general linear model, which includes as a predictor the non-linear correlations of regional BOLD activity with the stimuli, separately for encoding and retrieval phases. The results show the dependence of the non-linear correlations measures with the time of day and the type of the probe. In addition, the results indicate differences in the correlations measures with hippocampal regions between positive and lure probes. Besides confirming previous results on the influence of time-of-day on cognitive performance, the study demonstrates the effectiveness of the non-linear correlation analysis method for the characterization of fMRI task paradigms.

Rate-distortion theory of neural coding and its implications for working memory.

Project description:Rate-distortion theory provides a powerful framework for understanding the nature of human memory by formalizing the relationship between information rate (the average number of bits per stimulus transmitted across the memory channel) and distortion (the cost of memory errors). Here, we show how this abstract computational-level framework can be realized by a model of neural population coding. The model reproduces key regularities of visual working memory, including some that were not previously explained by population coding models. We verify a novel prediction of the model by reanalyzing recordings of monkey prefrontal neurons during an oculomotor delayed response task.

The Creative Stereotype Effect.

Project description:Because of its fundamental relevance to scientific innovation, artistic expression, and human ingenuity, creativity has long been the subject of systematic psychological investigation. Concomitantly, the far-reaching effects of stereotypes on various cognitive and social processes have been widely researched. Bridging these two literatures, we show in a series of two studies that stereotypes related to creativity can both enhance and diminish individuals' performance on a divergent thinking task. Specifically, Study 1 demonstrated that participants asked to take on a stereotypically uninhibited perspective performed significantly better on a divergent thinking task than those participants who took on a stereotypically inhibited perspective, and a control group. Relatedly, Study 2 showed that the same effect is found within-subjects, with divergent thinking significantly improving when participants invoke an uninhibited stereotype. Moreover, we demonstrate the efficacy of Latent Semantic Analysis as an objective measure of the originality of ideas, and discuss implications of our findings for the nature of creativity. Namely, that creativity may not be best described as a stable individual trait, but as a malleable product of context and perspective.

Modulating heme redox potential through protein-induced porphyrin distortion.

Project description:Hemoproteins are ubiquitous in biology and are commonly involved in critical processes such as electron transfer, oxidative phosphorylation, and signal transduction. Both the protein environment and the heme cofactor contribute to generate the range of chemical properties needed for these diverse functions. Using the heme nitric oxide/oxygen binding (H-NOX) protein from the thermophilic bacterium Thermoanaerobacter tengcongensis, we have shown that heme electronic properties can be modulated by porphyrin distortion within the same protein scaffold without changing the heme ligation state or heme environment. The degree of heme distortion was found to be directly correlated to the electron density at the heme iron, as evidenced by dramatic changes in the heme redox potential and pK(a) of the distal ligand ((-)OH vs H(2)O). Protein-induced porphyrin distortion represents a new strategy to rationally tune the electronic properties of protein-bound porphyrins and could be used to engineer proteins with desired reactivity or functionality.

Resonance Raman Spectroscopic Examination of Ferrochelatase-induced Porphyrin Distortion.

Project description:Ferrochelatase, the terminal enzyme of the heme biosynthetic pathway, catalyzes the insertion of ferrous iron into protoporphyrin IX to give heme. Resonance Raman spectroscopy has been instrumental in defining the distortion (mode and extent) of the porphyrin substrate, which is a critical step in the catalytic mechanism of ferrochelatase. Saddling is the predominant porphyrin out-of-plane deformation induced upon binding to ferrochelatase. Our analysis demonstrated that the intensity of the ?(15) line, which is assigned to an out-of-plane porphyrin vibration, in resonance Raman spectra obtained for wild-type- and variant ferrochelatase-bound porphyrin, correlates with the saddling deformation undergone by the porphyrin substrate. Further analysis of the three dimensional X-ray structures of bacterial, human and yeast ferrochelatases and the type and extent of distortion of the protein-bound porphyrin substrate and inhibitors using normal structure decomposition, support the view that ferrochelatase catalysis involves binding of a distorted porphyrin substrate and releasing of a flatter, metalated porphyrin.

Susceptibility-induced distortion correction in hyperpolarized echo planar imaging.

Project description:PurposeEcho planar imaging is an attractive rapid imaging readout that can image hyperpolarized compounds in vivo. By alternating the sign of the phase encoding gradient waveform, spatial offsets arising from uncertain frequency shifts can be determined. We show here that blip-reversed echo planar imaging can also be used to correct for susceptibility and B0 inhomogeneity effects that would otherwise produce image-domain distortion in the heart.MethodsPreviously acquired blip-reversed cardiac 3D-Spectral-Spatial echo planar imaging volumetric timecourses of hyperpolarized [1-13 C]pyruvate were distortion corrected by a deformation field estimated by reconstructing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)-weighted progressively subsampled temporally summed images of each metabolite.ResultsReconstructing blip-reversed data as proposed produced volumetric timecourses that overlaid with proton reference images more consistently than without such corrections.ConclusionThe method proposed may form an attractive method to correct for image-domain distortions in hyperpolarized echo planar imaging experiments.
