ABSTRACT: The data presented here represent estimates of the phosphorus content of crop production, phosphorus use efficiency (PUE) and agricultural phosphorus inputs associated with it across the contiguous United States. Net Anthropogenic Phosphorus Input (NAPI) estimates and related data are also provided. Data are presented at county, sub-regional and regional scales. Here, subregions refer to multi-county areas delineated with the goal of obtaining more uniform reporting areas than individual counties. Regions refer to the USDA Farm Resource Regions. The data are reported for 6 agricultural census years, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002, 2007 and 2012. Estimates of the variables were derived originally from USDA agricultural census data, US population census data, and other sources, using version 3.1 of the NANI/NAPI calculator toolbox (Hong et al.,2011).

Temporal and spatial variations of net anthropogenic nitrogen inputs (NANI) in the Pearl River Basin of China from 1986 to 2015.

Project description:Human activities have greatly influenced the natural nitrogen cycle, causing dramatic degradation of ecosystem function. Net anthropogenic nitrogen input (NANI) is an important factor contributing to the impact of human activities on the regional nitrogen cycle. Here, we analyzed the temporal and spatial variation of NANI in the Pearl River Basin of China between 1986 to 2015, and found that the total amount of NANI significantly increased from 3,362.25 kg N km-2 yr-1 to 8,071.15 kg N km-2 yr-1. Application of nitrogen fertilizers was the largest component of NANI in the Basin, accounting for 55.53% in the total NANI, followed by food/feed net nitrogen input (21.26%), atmospheric nitrogen deposition (12.95%), and crop nitrogen fixation (10.26%). Over the last three decades, nitrogen inputs from atmospheric nitrogen deposition have become the second largest source of NANI due to rapid industrialization and urbanization in the region. Regression analysis showed that the rapid growth of both GDP and population density were the main contributors to the increase of NANI. In addition, the increase in the number of red tides in the Pearl River Estuary was strongly correlated with NANI discharge (R2 = 0.90, p<0.01), suggesting the NANI's eutrophication effect. In total, this study provides a quantitative understanding of the temporal and spatial variations of NANI in the Pearl River Basin as well as the effects of NANI on estuarine waters, and offered key information for developing an integrated strategy for watershed nitrogen management.

Hotspots for Nitrogen and Phosphorus Losses from Food Production in China: A County-Scale Analysis.

Project description:Food production in China results in large losses of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) to the environment. Our objective is to identify hotspots for N and P losses to the environment from food production in China at the county scale. To do this, we used the NUFER (Nutrient flows in Food chains, Environment and Resources use) model. Between 1990 and 2012, the hotspot area expanded by a factor of 3 for N, and 24 for P. In 2012 most hotspots were found in the North China Plain. Hotspots covered less than 10% of the Chinese land area, but contributed by more than half to N and P losses to the environment. Direct discharge of animal manure to rivers was an important cause of N and P losses. Food production was found to be more intensive in hotspots than in other counties. Synthetic fertilizer use and animal numbers in hotspots were a factor of 4-5 higher than in other counties in 2012. Also the number of people working in food production and the incomes of farmers are higher in hotspots than in other counties. This study concludes with suggestions for region-specific pollution control technologies for food production in China.

Effects of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Inputs on Soil Bacterial Abundance, Diversity, and Community Composition in Chinese Fir Plantations.

Project description:Nutrient inputs to forest ecosystems significantly influence aboveground plant community structure and ecosystem functioning. However, our knowledge of the influence of nitrogen (N) and/or phosphorus (P) inputs on belowground microbial communities in subtropical forests is still unclear. In this study, we used quantitative polymerase chain reaction and Illumina Miseq sequencing of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene to investigate bacterial abundance, diversity, and community composition in a Chinese fir plantation. The fertilization regimes were as follows: untreated control (CK), P amendment (P), N amendment (N), and N with P amendment (NP). Additions of N decreased soil pH and bacterial 16S rRNA gene abundance by 3.95 (from 4.69 to 3.95) and 3.95 × 109 copies g-1 dry soil (from 9.27 × 109 to 3.95 × 109 g-1 dry soil), respectively. Bacterial richness and diversity decreased with N addition (N and NP) rather than only P input. Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Actinobacteria were the major phylum across all treatments. Nitrogen addition increased the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria by 42.0 and 10.5%, respectively, while it reduced that of Acidobacteria by 26.5%. Bacterial community structure in the CK and P treatments was different from that in the N and NP treatments upon principle coordinates analysis. Phosphorus addition did not significantly affect soil bacterial communities, and no interactions between N and P inputs on microbial traits were observed. Soil pH and mineral N availability appeared to have a cooperative effect on bacterial abundance and community structure, with soil pH being the key influencing factor by canonical correspondence analysis. These results indicate that inorganic N rather than P fertilization affected both bacterial abundance and community composition in subtropical forests.

Plant stoichiometric responses to elevated CO2 vary with nitrogen and phosphorus inputs: Evidence from a global-scale meta-analysis.

Project description:Rising levels of atmospheric CO2 have been implicated in changes in the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) content of terrestrial vegetation; however, questions remain over the role of C, N and P interactions in driving plant nutrient stoichiometry, particularly whether N and P additions alter vegetation responses to CO2 enrichment singly. Here we use meta-analysis of 46 published studies to investigate the response of plant N and P to elevated CO2 alone and in combination with nutrient (N and P) additions across temperate vs. tropical biomes. Elevated CO2 reduces plant N concentrations more than plant P concentrations in total biomass pools, resulting in a significant decline in vegetation N/P. However, elevated CO2 treatments in combination with N additions increase plant P concentrations, whereas P additions have no statistical effect on plant N concentrations under CO2 enrichment. These results point to compensatory but asymmetrical interactions between N, P and CO2; that changes in N rapidly alter the availability of P, but not the converse, in response to increased CO2. Our finding implies widespread N limitation with increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations alone. We also suggest that increased anthropogenic N deposition inputs could enhance plant N and P in a progressively CO2-enriched biosphere.

Differential mechanisms underlying responses of soil bacterial and fungal communities to nitrogen and phosphorus inputs in a subtropical forest.

Project description:Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition and phosphorus (P) addition both can change soil bacterial and fungal community structure with a consequent impact on ecosystem functions. However, which factor plays an important role in regulating responses of bacterial and fungal community to N and P enrichments remains unclear. We conducted a manipulative experiment to simulate N and P inputs (10 g N · m-2 · yr-1 NH4NO3 or 10 g P · m-2 · yr-1 NaH2PO4) and compared their effects on soil bacterial and fungal species richness and community composition. The results showed that the addition of N significantly increased NH4 + and Al3+ by 99.6% and 57.4%, respectively, and consequently led to a decline in soil pH from 4.18 to 3.75 after a 5-year treatment. P addition increased Al3+ and available P by 27.0% and 10-fold, respectively, but had no effect on soil pH. N addition significantly decreased bacterial species richness and Shannon index and resulted in a substantial shift of bacterial community composition, whereas P addition did not. Neither N nor P addition changed fungal species richness, Shannon index, and fungal community composition. A structural equation model showed that the shift in bacterial community composition was related to an increase in soil acid cations. The principal component scores of soil nutrients showed a significantly positive relationship with fungal community composition. Our results suggest that N and P additions affect soil bacterial and fungal communities in different ways in subtropical forest. These findings highlight how the diversity of microbial communities of subtropical forest soil will depend on future scenarios of anthropogenic N deposition and P enrichment, with a particular sensitivity of bacterial community to N addition.

Transcriptome data of Prorocentrum donghaiense Lu under nitrogen and phosphorus limitation.

Project description:Prorocentrum donghaiense Lu is one of the most frequently occurred harmful algae in the coastal waters of China. The growth of P. donghaiense can be limited by nitrogen or phosphorus in marine environment. However, molecular mechanism of P. donghaiense in response to nitrogen and phosphorus limitation is poorly understood. In this study, we summarized the transcriptome datasets of P. donghaiense in response to nitrogen or phosphorus depletion. Raw data of approximately 19 GB in size were generated from IlluminaHiSeqTM 4000 sequencer. From 250, 539, 604 raw reads, 211, 394, 052 clean reads were obtained. The raw data were deposited into SRA database with the BioProject ID 436946. Our dataset will provide more scientific and valuable information for analyses of gene expression related to metabolic processes in P. donghaiense.

Data Augmentation for a Virtual-Sensor-Based Nitrogen and Phosphorus Monitoring.

Project description:To better control eutrophication, reliable and accurate information on phosphorus and nitrogen loading is desired. However, the high-frequency monitoring of these variables is economically impractical. This necessitates using virtual sensing to predict them by utilizing easily measurable variables as inputs. While the predictive performance of these data-driven, virtual-sensor models depends on the use of adequate training samples (in quality and quantity), the procurement and operational cost of nitrogen and phosphorus sensors make it impractical to acquire sufficient samples. For this reason, the variational autoencoder, which is one of the most prominent methods in generative models, was utilized in the present work for generating synthetic data. The generation capacity of the model was verified using water-quality data from two tributaries of the River Thames in the United Kingdom. Compared to the current state of the art, our novel data augmentation-including proper experimental settings or hyperparameter optimization-improved the root mean squared errors by 23-63%, with the most significant improvements observed when up to three predictors were used. In comparing the predictive algorithms' performances (in terms of the predictive accuracy and computational cost), k-nearest neighbors and extremely randomized trees were the best-performing algorithms on average.

On the fate of anthropogenic nitrogen.

Project description:This article provides a synthesis of literature values to trace the fate of 150 Tg/yr anthropogenic nitrogen applied by humans to the Earth's land surface. Approximately 9 TgN/yr may be accumulating in the terrestrial biosphere in pools with residence times of ten to several hundred years. Enhanced fluvial transport of nitrogen in rivers and percolation to groundwater accounts for approximately 35 and 15 TgN/yr, respectively. Greater denitrification in terrestrial soils and wetlands may account for the loss of approximately 17 TgN/yr from the land surface, calculated by a compilation of data on the fraction of N(2)O emitted to the atmosphere and the current global rise of this gas in the atmosphere. A recent estimate of atmospheric transport of reactive nitrogen from land to sea (NO(x) and NH(x)) accounts for 48 TgN/yr. The total of these enhanced sinks, 124 TgN/yr, is less than the human-enhanced inputs to the land surface, indicating areas of needed additional attention to global nitrogen biogeochemistry. Policy makers should focus on increasing nitrogen-use efficiency in fertilization, reducing transport of reactive N to rivers and groundwater, and maximizing denitrification to its N(2) endproduct.

Nitrogen in black phosphorus structure.

Project description:Group V elements in crystal structure isostructural to black phosphorus with unique puckered two-dimensional layers exhibit exciting physical and chemical phenomena. However, as the first element of group V, nitrogen has never been found in the black phosphorus structure. Here, we report the synthesis of the black phosphorus–structured nitrogen at 146 GPa and 2200 K. Metastable black phosphorus–structured nitrogen was retained after quenching it to room temperature under compression and characterized in situ during decompression to 48 GPa, using synchrotron x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. We show that the original molecular nitrogen is transformed into extended single-bonded structure through gauche and trans conformations. Raman spectroscopy shows that black phosphorus–structured nitrogen is strongly anisotropic and exhibits high Raman intensities in two Ag normal modes. Synthesis of black phosphorus–structured nitrogen provides a firm base for exploring new type of high-energy-density nitrogen and a new direction of two-dimensional nitrogen.
