Mild synthesis of diboryldiborenes by diboration of B-B triple bonds.

ABSTRACT: A set of diboryldiborenes are prepared by the mild, catalyst-free, room-temperature diboration of the B-B triple bonds of doubly base-stabilized diborynes. Two of the product diboryldiborenes are found to be air- and water-stable in the solid state, an effect that is attributed to their high crystallinity and extreme insolubility in a wide range of solvents.

Project description:A nitrogen-based analogue of the Schrock and Clark "yl-ene-yne" complex, W(CBu t )(CHBu t )(CH2Bu t )(dmpe), has been prepared. The new complex is the nitrido, imido, amido anion [NCr(NPh)(NPri2)2]-, which was structurally characterized with the [K(crypt-2.2.2)]+ counterion. The "Cr-N 1-2-3" complex was prepared from NCr(NHPh)(NPri2)2, which exists as this nitrido-amido tautomer, rather than the bis(imido) Cr(NH)(NPh)(NPri2)2. By selection of electrophile, the nitrido-imido salt K[NCr(NPh)(NPri2)2] can undergo reaction at either the imido or the nitrido to form unusual examples of nitrido or bis(imido) complexes.

Stabilization of Boron-Boron Triple Bonds by Mesoionic Carbenes.

Project description:Density functional theory-based computations are carried out to analyze the electronic structure and stability of B2(MIC)2 complexes, where MIC is a mesoionic carbene, viz., imidazolin-4-ylidenes, pyrazolin-4-ylidene, 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene, tetrazol-5-ylidene, and isoxazol-4-ylidene. The structure, stability, and the nature of bonding of these complexes are further compared to those of the previously reported B2(NHC)2 and B2(cAAC)2. A thorough bonding analysis via natural bond order, molecular orbital, and energy decomposition analyses (EDA) in combination with natural orbital for chemical valence (NOCV) reveals that MICs are suitable ligands to stabilize B2 species in its (3)1∑g + excited state, resulting in an effective B-B bond order of 3. Their high dissociation energy and endergonicity at 298 K for the dissociations L-BB-L → 2 B-L and L-BB-L → BB + 2 L (L = Ligand) indicate their viability at ambient condition. The donor property of MICs is comparable to that of NHCMe. The orbital interaction plays a greater role than the coulombic interaction in forming the B-L bonds. The EDA-NOCV results show that the sum of the orbital energies associated with the (+, +) and (+, -) L→[B2]←L σ-donations is far larger than that of L←[B2]→L π-back donation. It also reveals that cAACMe possesses the largest σ-donation and π-back donation abilities among the studied ligands, and the σ-donation and π-back donation abilities of MICs are comparable to those of NHCMe. Therefore, the present study shows that MICs would also be an excellent choice as ligands to experimentally realize new compounds having a strong B-B triple bond.

A Biocompatible, Stimuli-Responsive, and Injectable Hydrogel with Triple Dynamic Bonds.

Project description:Injectable hydrogels have attracted growing interests as promising biomaterials for clinical applications, due to their minimum invasive implanting approach and easy-handling performance. Nevertheless, natural biomaterials-based injectable hydrogels with desirable nontoxicity are suffering from limited functions, failing to fulfill the requirements of clinical biomaterials. The development of novel injectable biomaterials with a combination of biocompatibility and adequate functional properties is a growing urgency toward biomedical applications. In this contribution, we report a simple and effective approach to fabricate multi-functional CMC-OSA-DTP hydrogels. Two kinds of natural polysaccharide derived polymers, carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) and oxidized alginate (OSA) along with 3,3'-dithiopropionic acid dihydrazide (DTP) were utilized to introduce three dynamic covalent bonds. Owing to the existence of triple dynamic bonds, this unique CMC-OSA-DTP hydrogel possessed smart redox and pH stimuli-responsive property, injectability as well as self-healing ability. In addition, the CCK-8 and live/dead assays demonstrated satisfying cytocompatibility of the CMC-OSA-DTP hydrogel in vitro. Based on its attractive properties, this easy-fabricated and multi-functional hydrogel demonstrated the great potential as an injectable biomaterial in a variety of biomedical applications.

Urea-Catalyzed Vinyl Carbocation Formation Enables Mild Functionalization of Unactivated C-H Bonds.

Project description:Herein we report the 3,5-bistrifluoromethylphenyl urea-catalyzed functionalization of unactivated C-H bonds. In this system, the urea catalyst mediates the formation of high-energy vinyl carbocations that undergo facile C-H insertion and Friedel-Crafts reactions. We introduce a new paradigm for these privileged scaffolds where the combination of hydrogen-bonding motifs and strong bases affords highly active Lewis acid catalysts capable of ionizing strong C-O bonds. Despite the highly Lewis-acidic nature of these catalysts that enables triflate abstraction from sp2 carbons, these newly found reaction conditions allow for the formation of heterocycles and tolerate highly Lewis-basic heteroaromatic substrates. This strategy showcases the potential utility of dicoordinated vinyl carbocations in organic synthesis.

Nativity of lignin carbohydrate bonds substantiated by biomimetic synthesis.

Project description:The question of whether lignin is covalently linked to carbohydrates in native wood, forming what is referred to as lignin-carbohydrate complexes (LCCs), still lacks unequivocal proof. This is mainly due to the need to isolate lignin from woody materials prior to analysis, under conditions leading to partial chemical modification of the native wood polymers. Thus, the correlation between the structure of the isolated LCCs and LCCs in situ remains open. As a way to circumvent the problematic isolation, biomimicking lignin polymerization in vivo and in vitro is an interesting option. Herein, we report the detection of lignin-carbohydrate bonds in the extracellular lignin formed by tissue-cultured Norway spruce cells, and in modified biomimetic lignin synthesis (dehydrogenation polymers). Semi-quantitative 2D heteronuclear singular quantum coherence (HSQC)-, 31P -, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy were applied as analytical tools. Combining results from these systems, four types of lignin-carbohydrate bonds were detected; benzyl ether, benzyl ester, γ-ester, and phenyl glycoside linkages, providing direct evidence of lignin-carbohydrate bond formation in biomimicked lignin polymerization. Based on our findings, we propose a sequence for lignin-carbohydrate bond formation in plant cell walls.

Native functionality in triple catalytic cross-coupling: sp³ C-H bonds as latent nucleophiles.

Project description:The use of sp(3) C-H bonds--which are ubiquitous in organic molecules--as latent nucleophile equivalents for transition metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions has the potential to substantially streamline synthetic efforts in organic chemistry while bypassing substrate activation steps. Through the combination of photoredox-mediated hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and nickel catalysis, we have developed a highly selective and general C-H arylation protocol that activates a wide array of C-H bonds as native functional handles for cross-coupling. This mild approach takes advantage of a tunable HAT catalyst that exhibits predictable reactivity patterns based on enthalpic and bond polarity considerations to selectively functionalize ?-amino and ?-oxy sp(3) C-H bonds in both cyclic and acyclic systems.

Single and double activation of acetone by isolobal B[triple bond, length as m-dash]N and B[triple bond, length as m-dash]B triple bonds.

Project description:B[triple bond, length as m-dash]N and B[triple bond, length as m-dash]B triple bonds induce C-H activation of acetone to yield a (2-propenyloxy)aminoborane and an unsymmetrical 1-(2-propenyloxy)-2-hydrodiborene, respectively. DFT calculations showed that, despite their stark electronic differences, both the B[triple bond, length as m-dash]N and B[triple bond, length as m-dash]B triple bonds activate acetone via a similar coordination-deprotonation mechanism. In contrast, the reaction of acetone with a cAAC-supported diboracumulene yielded a unique 1,2,3-oxadiborole, which according to DFT calculations also proceeds via an unsymmetrical diborene, followed by intramolecular hydride migration and a second C-H activation of the enolate ligand.

Pentavalent lanthanide nitride-oxides: NPrO and NPrO<sup>-</sup> complexes with N≡Pr triple bonds.

Project description:The neutral molecule NPrO and its anion NPrO- are produced via co-condensation of laser-ablated praseodymium atoms with nitric oxide in a solid neon matrix. Combined infrared spectroscopy and state-of-the-art quantum chemical calculations confirm that both species are pentavalent praseodymium nitride-oxides with linear structures that contain Pr≡N triple bonds and Pr=O double bonds. Electronic structure studies show that the neutral NPrO molecule features a 4f0 electron configuration and a Pr(v) oxidation state similar to that of the isoelectronic PrO2+ ion, while its NPrO- anion possesses a 4f1 electron configuration and a Pr(iv) oxidation state. The neutral NPrO molecule is thus a rare lanthanide nitride-oxide species with a Pr(v) oxidation state, which follows the recent identification of the first Pr(v) oxidation state in the PrO2+ and PrO4 complexes (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 2016, 55, 6896). This finding indicates that lanthanide compounds with oxidation states of higher than +IV are richer in chemistry than previously recognized.

Substituent Effects on the Stability of Thallium and Phosphorus Triple Bonds: A Density Functional Study.

Project description:Three computational methods (M06-2X/Def2-TZVP, B3PW91/Def2-TZVP and B3LYP/LANL2DZ+dp) were used to study the effect of substitution on the potential energy surfaces of RTl?PR (R = F, OH, H, CH?, SiH?, SiMe(SitBu?)?, SiiPrDis?, Tbt (=C?H?-2,4,6-(CH(SiMe?)?)?), and Ar* (=C?H?-2,6-(C?H?-2, 4,6-i-Pr?)?)). The theoretical results show that these triply bonded RTl?PR compounds have a preference for a bent geometry (i.e., ?R?Tl?P ? 180° and ?Tl?P?R ? 120°). Two valence bond models are used to interpret the bonding character of the Tl?P triple bond. One is model [I], which is best described as TlP. This interprets the bonding conditions for RTl?PR molecules that feature small ligands. The other is model [II], which is best represented as TlP. This explains the bonding character of RTl?PR molecules that feature large substituents. Irrespective of the types of substituents used for the RTl?PR species, the theoretical investigations (based on the natural bond orbital, the natural resonance theory, and the charge decomposition analysis) demonstrate that their Tl?P triple bonds are very weak. However, the theoretical results predict that only bulkier substituents greatly stabilize the triply bonded RTl?PR species, from the kinetic viewpoint.

Effects of double and triple bonds on the spatial representations of odorants in the rat olfactory bulb.

Project description:Many naturally occurring volatile chemicals that are detected through the sense of smell contain unsaturated (double or triple) carbon-carbon bonds. These bonds can affect odors perceived by humans, yet in a prior study of unsaturated hydrocarbons we found only very minor effects of unsaturated bonds. In the present study, we tested the possibility that unsaturated bonds affect the recognition of oxygen-containing functional groups, because humans perceive odor differences between such molecules. We therefore compared spatial activity patterns across the entire glomerular layer of the rat olfactory bulb evoked by oxygen-containing odorants differing systematically in the presence, position, number, and stereochemistry of unsaturated bonds. We quantified activity patterns by mapping [(14)C]2-deoxyglucose uptake into anatomically standardized data matrices, which we compared statistically. We found that the presence and number of unsaturated bonds consistently affected activity patterns, with the largest effect related to the presence of a triple bond. Effects of bond saturation included a loss of activity in glomeruli strongly activated by the corresponding saturated odorants and/or the presence of activity in areas not stimulated by the corresponding saturated compounds. The position of double bonds also affected patterns of activity, but cis vs. trans configuration had no measurable impact in all five sets of stereoisomers that we studied. These results simultaneously indicate the importance of interactions between carbon-carbon bond types and functional groups in the neural coding of odorant chemical information and highlight the emerging concept that the rat olfactory system is more sensitive to certain types of chemical differences than others.
