A Convenient Synthesis of Pentaporphyrins and Supramolecular Complexes with a Fulleropyrrolidine.

ABSTRACT: A simple and straightforward synthesis of diporphyrins and pentaporphyrins is reported here. The supramolecular interactions of the new porphyrin derivatives with C60 and PyC60 (a pyridyl [60]fulleropyrrolidine) were evaluated by absorption and fluorescence titrations in toluene. While no measurable modifications of the absorption and fluorescence spectra were observed upon addition of C60 to the porphyrin derivatives, the addition of PyC60 to the corresponding mono-Zn(II) porphyrins resulted in the formation of Zn(porphyrin)-PyC60 coordination complexes and the binding constants were calculated. Results show that the four free-base porphyrin units in pentaporphyrin 6 have a significant contribution in the stabilization of the 6-PyC60 complex. The crystal and molecular features of the pentaporphyrin Zn5 were unveiled using single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies.

Project description:A pair of novel dipicolylamine ligands bearing isothiocyanate groups were used as conjugation reagents to prepare multivalent molecules with anionic recognition capability. The isothiocyanates were reacted with two classes of dendritic scaffolds bearing primary amines, squaraine rotaxanes and PAMAM dendrimers, and the products were converted into water soluble zinc(II) coordination complexes. The multivalent squaraine rotaxanes exhibit high fluorescence quantum yields in water and are very well suited for biological imaging applications.

Convenient Synthesis of Deuterosilanes by Direct H/D Exchange Mediated by Easily Accessible Pt(0) Complexes.

Project description:Easily accessible, simple phosphino-platinum(0) complexes catalyze (0.1-1 mol % equivalent) the deuteration of silanes in good yields under mild conditions (60 °C, 1 atm). The catalysis is mediated by platinum(II) deuteride/hydride complexes that are in equilibrium with the precursor Pt(0) complexes. The Pt(II) complexes can also be inserted into the Si-H bond of silanes to give intermediate Pt(IV) complexes. The proposed mechanism for catalysis is supported by density functional theory calculations.

A Convenient Synthesis of Diketopyrrolopyrrole Dyes.

Project description:Diketopyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrroles (DPP) are high-performance organic optoelectronic materials. They have applications in solar cells, fluorescent probes, bioimaging, photodynamic/photothermal therapy, and in many other areas. This article reports a convenient two-step synthesis of various DPP dyes from Pigment Red 254, an inexpensive commercial pigment. The synthesis includes a Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of a bis(4-chlorophenyl)DPP derivative with aryl and hetaryl boronic acids under mild reaction conditions. The new dyes show large Stokes shifts and high fluorescence quantum yields, important features for their potential use in technical and biological applications.

Supramolecular allosteric cofacial porphyrin complexes.

Project description:Nature routinely uses cooperative interactions to regulate cellular activity. For years, chemists have designed synthetic systems that aim toward harnessing the reactivity common to natural biological systems. By learning how to control these interactions in situ, one begins to allow for the preparation of man-made biomimetic systems that can efficiently mimic the interactions found in Nature. To this end, we have designed a synthetic protocol for the preparation of flexible metal-directed supramolecular cofacial porphyrin complexes which are readily obtained in greater than 90% yield through the use of new hemilabile porphyrin ligands with bifunctional ether-phosphine or thioether-phosphine substituents at the 5 and 15 positions on the porphyrin ring. The resulting architectures contain two hemilabile ligand-metal domains (RhI or CuI sites) and two cofacially aligned porphyrins (ZnII sites), offering orthogonal functionalities and allowing these multimetallic complexes to exist in two states, "condensed" or "open". Combining the ether-phosphine ligand with the appropriate RhI or CuI transition-metal precursors results in "open" macrocyclic products. In contrast, reacting the thioether-phosphine ligand with RhI or CuI precursors yields condensed structures that can be converted into their "open" macrocyclic forms via introduction of additional ancillary ligands. The change in cavity size that occurs allows these structures to function as allosteric catalysts for the acyl transfer reaction between X-pyridylcarbinol (where X = 2, 3, or 4) and 1-acetylimidazole. For 3- and 4-pyridylcarbinol, the "open" macrocycle accelerates the acyl transfer reaction more than the condensed analogue and significantly more than the porphyrin monomer. In contrast, an allosteric effect was not observed for 2-pyridylcarbinol, which is expected to be a weaker binder and is unfavorably constrained inside the macrocyclic cavity.

A Convenient Synthesis of 3,7'-Bisindole Derivatives.

Project description:An efficient and convenient method to synthesize highly functionalized 3,7'-bisindole derivatives has been developed via a Michael addition and cyclic condensation reaction of heterocyclic ketene aminals (HKAs) with 2-(1H-indol-3-yl)cyclohexa-2,5-diene-1,4-dione derivatives in ethanol-based solvents at room temperature. This strategy provides an efficient, environmentally friendly approach for easy access to various novel 3,7'-bisindole derivatives in moderate to good yields.

Vancomycin forms ligand-mediated supramolecular complexes.

Project description:The emergence of resistance to vancomycin and related glycopeptide antibiotics is spurring efforts to develop new antimicrobial therapeutics. High-resolution structural information about antibiotic-ligand recognition should prove valuable in the rational design of improved drugs. We have determined the X-ray crystal structure of the complex of vancomycin with N-acetyl-D-Ala-D-Ala, a mimic of the natural muramyl peptide target, and refined this structure at a resolution of 1.3 A to R and R(free) values of 0.172 and 0.195, respectively. The crystal asymmetric unit contains three back-back vancomycin dimers; two of these dimers participate in ligand-mediated face-face interactions that produce an infinite chain of molecules running throughout the crystal. The third dimer packs against the side of a face-face interface in a tight "side-side" interaction that involves both polar contacts and burial of hydrophobic surface. The trimer of dimers found in the asymmetric unit is essentially identical to complexes seen in three other crystal structures of glycopeptide antibiotics complexed with peptide ligands. These four structures are derived from crystals belonging to different space groups, suggesting that the trimer of dimers may not be simply a crystal packing artifact and prompting us to ask if ligand-mediated oligomerization could be observed in solution. Using size-exclusion chromatography, dynamic light scattering, and small-angle X-ray scattering, we demonstrate that vancomycin forms discrete supramolecular complexes in the presence of tripeptide ligands. Size estimates for these complexes are consistent with assemblies containing four to six vancomycin monomers.

Supramolecular Assemblies of Dipyrrolyldiketone CuII Complexes.

Project description:Dipyrrolyldiketones are essential building units of anion-responsive π-electronic molecules and ion-pairing assemblies. Here, we demonstrated that they form complexes with CuII characterized by planar geometries. The solid-state stacking assembled structures, as revealed by single-crystal X-ray analysis, were modulated by the substitution of pyrrole units. The rectangular shapes of the CuII complexes resulted in the formation of mesophases upon introduction of aliphatic chains.

Convenient and Efficient Synthesis of Functionalized 2-Sulfenylindoles.

Project description:A simple, efficient, and practical sulfenylation at the C2 position of N-tosylindoles under mild conditions was developed. The designed transformation is based on the reaction of N-tosylindoles with BuLi and S-alkyl, and S-aryl phosphorodithioates or thiotosylates to produce 2-sulfenylindoles in moderate to high yields. The presence of additional hydroxy, carboxy, or amino functionalities did not disturb the formation of products.

Photoresponsive supramolecular complexes as efficient DNA regulator.

Project description:Two supramolecular complexes of trans-1?CB[8] and trans-2?CB[8] were successfully achieved by the controlled selective complexation process of cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) with hetero-guest pair containing azobenzene and bispyridinium moieties in aqueous solution, exhibiting the reversibly light-driven movements of CB[8] upon the photocontrollable isomerization of azophenyl axle components. Significantly, the obtained bistable supramolecular complexes and their corresponding [2]pseudorotaxanes could act as a promising concentrator and cleavage agent to regulate the binding behaviors with DNA molecules.
