Surgery With or Without Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy in TreatingPatients With Stage I Rectal Cancer

ABSTRACT: RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Combining surgery with chemotherapy and radiation therapy may kill more tumor cells and prevent recurrence of the cancer. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of surgery with or without chemotherapy and radiation therapy in treating patients who have stage I rectal cancer.
