The miRNAs we have identified have the potential to develop into a crucial blood-based screening tool to help monitor the development of breast cancer in benign breast tumors.

Pilot Study of Colon Cancer Screening Tests

Project description:Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in North America. These deaths are preventable with proper screening. Fecal occult blood testing, virtual colonoscopy, and standard (optical) colonoscopy are all options for colon cancer screening, but it is not known which is the best at preventing death from colon cancer. A large study comparing these three tests is desperately needed. In this pilot study, the investigators want to find out what percentage of patients will show up for their screening test once enrolled. This will provide crucial information for the successful execution of the larger study.

Study of In-home Tests for Colorectal Cancer

Project description:The objective of this study is to compare the performance characteristics or accuracy of different in-home screening tests for colorectal cancer (fecal occult blood tests), among patients without symptoms of colorectal cancer. Patients who meet study eligibility criteria and agree to participate in the study are asked to perform one guaiac and two immunochemical fecal occult blood tests at home prior to their colonoscopy. After the patient has completed and sent in the test kits, the patient then undergoes their previously scheduled colonoscopy. Accuracy and performance characteristics for each type of fecal occult blood test, including sensitivity, specificity, test positivity rate and positive predictive value for advanced colorectal neoplasia (advanced colorectal polyps) or colorectal cancer, will be estimated by comparing the fecal occult blood test results with the results of the colonoscopy.

Determining the accuracy of non-invasive biomarkers for detecting pre-cancerous colorectal neoplasia

Project description:Interventions: This study will discover and develop novel blood & stool biomarkers. Biomarkers will be evaluated for both their ability and acceptability to detect inflammation, adenomas, and cancer in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms. The development of new screening tests will help guide doctors in determining which symptomatic patients need colonoscopy. People experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms, have had a microscopic rectal bleed (by indication of a positive faecal occult blood test), or living with inflammatory bowel disease who are booked for a colonoscopy at our study sites will be pre-screened for eligibility. An invitation letter will be sent to eligible individuals, accompanied by a faecal immunochemical test (FIT) kit, questionnaire, and participant information & consent form. Participants may be met before their colonoscopy appointment by a member of the research team to have a short medical history interview & a blood sample taken. Participants may also provide a stool sample prior to their colonoscopy. Samples of tissue (biopsies) may be requested from colonoscopy by opt-in consent. Candidate biomarkers (which indicate presence of pathological change in the bowel) will be identified from molecular analyses on tissue samples. Stool and blood samples will be subsequently analysed to determine the lead biomarkers, with results compared to the findings at colonoscopy. Primary outcome(s): Blood biomarker levels (BCAT1 and IKZF1) will be assessed as a composite outcome, to indicate the presence of adenoma. Proteomic profiling of Lemna minor exposed to Atorvastatin

Project description:Lemna minor a small aquatic plant has been used extensively in ecotoxicolgical testing to elucidate substance-related effects to freshwater plants. They are free-floating freshwater macrophyte, very sensitive towards chemical exposure and easy to cultivate thus makes the plant suitable for laboratory testing. Here we present a rapid and reproducible data dependent proteomics approach for identifying growth related molecular signatures in lemna minor as an alternative to algae testing. For this, we have analyzed the proteome of lemna minor exposed to atorvastatin as a model substances for identifying growth related molecular perturbations. These fingerprints allow for a definition of potential biomarkers as tools in screening approaches and for integration in plant growth inhibition studies (OECD TG 221), for identifying suspect substances.
