ABSTRACT: RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as capecitabine and oxaliplatin, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well giving capecitabine together with oxaliplatin works in treating older patients with metastatic colorectal cancer.

Giving bevacizumab together with capecitabine may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well giving bevacizumab together with capecitabine works as first-line therapy in treating older patients with metastatic colorectal cancer.

Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill tumor cells. Oxaliplatin may make tumor cells more sensitive to radiation therapy. Giving capecitabine and oxaliplatin together with radiation therapy before surgery may shrink the tumor so it can be removed. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well giving capecitabine and oxaliplatin together with radiation therapy works in treating patients who are undergoing surgery for stage I rectal cancer.

Selenomethionine may slow the growth of tumor cells. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill tumor cells. Giving combination chemotherapy together With selenomethionine and radiation therapy may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well selenomethionine works when given together with capecitabine, oxaliplatin, and radiation therapy in treating patients undergoing surgery for newly diagnosed stage II or stage III rectal cancer.

Giving more than one drug (combination chemotherapy) may kill more tumor cells. Monoclonal antibodies, such as cetuximab, can block tumor growth in different ways. Some block the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Others find tumor cells and help kill them or carry tumor-killing substances to them. Cetuximab may also stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. It is not yet known whether giving capecitabine and oxaliplatin together with cetuximab is more effective than capecitabine and oxaliplatin in treating colorectal cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized phase II trial is studying how well giving capecitabine and oxaliplatin together with cetuximab works compared to capecitabine and oxaliplatin in treating patients with metastatic colorectal cancer that cannot be removed by surgery.

Monoclonal antibodies, such as bevacizumab, can block tumor growth in different ways. Some block the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Others find tumor cells and help kill them or carry tumor-killing substances to them. Giving bevacizumab together with combination chemotherapy may be a better way to block tumor growth. It is not yet known whether combination chemotherapy is more effective when given together with or without bevacizumab in treating patients with colorectal cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized phase II trial is studying the side effects of giving bevacizumab together with first-line chemotherapy and to see how well it works in treating older patients with metastatic colorectal cancer.

PURPOSE: This phase I/II trial is studying the side effects and best dose of gemcitabine when given together with capecitabine and oxaliplatin as second-line therapy and to see how well it works in treating patients with advanced colorectal cancer previously treated with irinotecan.
