Colorectal Cancer Screening Intervention for Family Members of Colorectal Cancer Patients

ABSTRACT: This proposed study will use previous study results to guide the development and evaluation of interventions to improve CRC screening acceptance. The proposed study will evaluate the impact of three interventions to promote CRC screening among siblings in this increased-risk group, who are not currently compliant with CRC screening guidelines: 1) a generic print intervention; 2) a tailored print intervention, and; 3) a tailored print plus tailored telephone counseling intervention.

Project description:The proposed study seeks to investigate the impact of a culturally targeted print educational intervention on rates of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening via colonoscopy among Hispanics. If, as expected, the addition of culturally targeted materials to best clinical practices as compared to a) best clinical practices plus standard materials or b) best clinical practices alone leads to higher rates of CRC screening via colonoscopy then the culturally targeted print educational materials can be easily disseminated among this rapidly growing minority group who have low rates of CRC screening and whose disease is detected at later, less curable stages.

Tools for Improving Colorectal Cancer Screening Rates: Multimedia Versus Print

Project description:The objective of this study is to compare the effectiveness of multimedia and print tools designed to provide patients at safety-net clinics with comprehensible information about colorectal cancer screening and motivate them to complete screening.The print and multimedia interventions were constructed with parallel content to allow valid comparison of format-related effects on knowledge and screening rates.These easy to use tools will provide under served patients at community health centers with clear and consistent messages about colorectal Cancer(CRC) and CRC screening, delivered immediately before the patients see a doctor. Specific Aims 1. To determine if multimedia and print interventions that provide patients with information and motivational messages about CRC screening increase screening rates above usual care. 2. Determine whether showing patients a multimedia program achieves higher CRC screening rates than does a print booklet with equivalent messages. 1. Examine if the effects of these multimedia and print interventions on CRC screening rates differ with literacy level. 2. Examine if the effects of these multimedia and print interventions on CRC screening differ with race/ethnicity 3. Examine if these multimedia and print interventions have differential effects on knowledge relevant to CRC screening.

Population testing of an internet-based Personalised Decision Support system for Colorectal Cancer screening

Project description:Interventions: Participants in the intervention conditions receive ONE of ethier an internet-based tailored decision support intervention, or internet-based non-tailored decision support intervention. In each intervention, participants answer questions concerning their perceived susceptibility to Colorectal cancer (CRC) and attitudes towards CRC screening. Tailored responses are then generated for the ‘tailored group’ which are designed to correct misaprehensions where they exist. For the non-tailored group participants do not receive tailored messages but rather generic information brochures concerning Colorectal cancer. This intervention is accessed once only and participants work through it at their own pace. The overall duration of the study will be approximately 12 months. Primary outcome(s): Number of participants completing a colorectal cancer screening test per group. All participants receive a free Colorectal Cancer screening test and the number of kits returned per study arm is recorded upon return of the kit[approximately one year after randomisation] Study Design: Purpose: Prevention; Allocation: Randomised controlled trial

Project description:Qualitative data were collected from 5 General Practionners (GPs) focus groups, 24 patient interviews and 35 recorded consultations from 9 GPs to explore colorectal cancer (CRC) screening in France The qualitative data indicated that improvement was needed in patient-centered communication. A Physician-Based Trial to Increase Colorectal Cancer Screening in Chinese

Project description:The objective of this study is to test whether a culturally-tailored in-office based intervention have impact on increasing Chinese physician’s recommendation of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening to their nonadherent Chinese patients. Special aims are to: 1. Evaluate the efficacy of a culturally-tailored physician intervention on increasing non-adherent Chinese American’s patients’ CRC screening rate. 2. Identify factors that mediate or moderate the intervention effects. For example, patients who hold an eastern cultural view or are less acculturated will be more likely to benefit from the intervention than patients who hold a western view or who are more acculturated.

Comparing Interventions to Increase Colorectal Cancer Screening

Project description:The purpose of this study is to test different approaches to help people understand the purpose of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, two screening test options available, and the barriers to screening so they can make informed decisions about CRC screening. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: (1) one group will receive a tailored digital video disc (DVD) in the mail; (2) another group will receive the mailed DVD plus telephone calls from a patient navigator; and (3) the third group will receive the care normally provided by the healthcare system’s endoscopy department. The investigators hypothesize the following: (1) participants who receive the tailored DVD plus the patient navigation intervention will have higher rates of CRC screening with the fecal immunochemical test (FIT), colonoscopy, or either screening test compared to those who receive the tailored DVD alone; (2) participants who receive either intervention (DVD only or DVD plus patient navigation) will have higher rates of CRC screening with FIT, colonoscopy, or either screening test than those who receive usual care; and (3) participants who receive either intervention who complete colonoscopy will have better quality of bowel preparation, less anxiety about the procedure, and greater satisfaction with the colonoscopy experience than those who receive usual care.

Family Colorectal Cancer Awareness and Risk Education Project (Family CARE Project)

Project description:The Family Colorectal Cancer Awareness and Risk Education Project (Family CARE Project) is designed to determine whether a personalized telephone plus mailed print cancer risk assessment and behavior change counseling intervention is more effective than a targeted mailed print intervention in promoting risk appropriate screening in individuals with a family history of the disease. The project targets people residing in both rural and urban areas, allowing an examination of differential intervention effects with regard to place of residence.
