Stoma Neuro Linguistic Programming Stoma Adaptation Quality of Life

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to examine the effect of NLP techniques on stoma compliance and quality of life in patients with stoma. The study will be conducted using a prospective randomized controlled single-blind clinical trial model. The research will consist of patients with temporary or permanent colostomy/ileostomy, who are hospitalized in Mersin City Training and Research Hospital. Research data will be obtained with demographic questionnaire, Adjustment Scale for Individuals with Ostomy and Stoma Quality of Life Scale. Analysis of the study data will be done through the IBM SPSS Statistics 26 package program. While evaluating the study data, frequencies (number, percentage) for categorical variables and descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation) for numerical variables will be given. Statistical significance in the analyzes will be interpreted at the 0.05 level.

To do this data will be retrieved from the Swedish Patient Register to identify all patients with a diagnosis of colorectal cancer and a stoma construction procedure during two previous calender years. To collect data on stoma function and quality of life a specific questionnaire will be sent to the cohort approximately within 2 years of the procedure.

A Randomized Trial on the Technical Aspects of Stoma Construction.

Project description:An investigation on the difference in stoma hernia frequency related to surgical technique when incising the fascia. All patients planned for elective colostomy formation are to be included. Patients undergoing rectal resection with a TME and a colostomy (Hartmann’s procedure) for rectal cancer, abdominoperineal resection for rectal cancer or diverting colostomy for any reason are all included. The three groups for randomization are: A. circular incision in the abdominal wall fascia B. cruciate incision in the abdominal wall fascia C. mesh enforced cruciate incision in the abdominal wall fascia Primary endpoint is the parastomal hernia rate within 12 months from index surgery. Secondary end-points include clinical variables, re-admission and/or re-operation due to any stoma complication, quality of life and health economy analyses, at 12 months.

Project description:Background and study aims Ileostomy is a procedure where the small intestine is diverted to an opening in the abdomen. The waste products are collected through an opening called a stoma in the tummy. With the loss of an important body function and a distortion in body image, stoma patients experience physical, psychological and social challenges. Nurses have an important role in helping patients make a smooth transition to living with their stoma. Limited studies have tested psychosocial interventions (methods) on the improvement of patients stoma-related health concerns. The aim is to find out if a psychosocial intervention leads to a significant reduction in days to stoma proficiency, length of hospital stay, anxiety and depression, as well as improvement in their ability to care for themselves, acceptance of the stoma, and quality of life for patients with a newly formed stoma. Who can participate? Patients undergoing elective colorectal resections who require formation of a permanent stoma. What does the study involve? Eligible patients will be randomly allocated to either a control group or an intervention group. Patients in the control group will receive routine care, where they will receive education on care of stoma after the operation. Patients in the intervention group will receive the STOMA psychosocial intervention programme in addition to routine care. The STOMA psychosocial intervention programme includes an individual psychoeducation face-to-face session (before the operation) with a booklet provided, and five telephone follow-up sessions (one before the operation and four after).

Peripheral blood transcriptome profiles in Nepali child soldiers and civilians.

Project description:Analysis of transcript abundance estimates as a function of child soldier status, PTSD symptoms, and psychological resilience. Gene expression profiling was conducted on dried blood spot (DBS) samples collected from community dwelling adolescents and young adults in Nepal. Approximatley half of the sample were former child soldiers in the Nepal People's War and the other half were demographically similiar civilian non-combatants. In addition to basic demographic characteristics (age, sex, ethnic minority status, social caste status, education level), participants were also assessed on syptoms of post-traumatic stress (PTS, assessed by a culturally adapted version of The Child PTSD Symptom Scale; Kohrt BA, et al. (2011) Validation of cross-cultural child mental health and psychosocial research instruments: adapting the Depression Self-Rating Scale and Child PTSD Symptom Scale in Nepal. BMC Psychiatry 11(1):e127, with higher values indicating greater PTSD symptoms) and psychological resilience (assessed by a culturally adapted version of the Resilience Scale; Wagnild GM & Young HM (1993) Development and psychometric evaluation of the Resilience Scale.
