ABSTRACT: RATIONALE: A screening questionnaire may help doctors plan better treatment for older patients with cancer. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying a questionnaire in screening older patients with cancer.

Computer-Based Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment in Oncology for Individuals 70 or Older With Gastrointestinal Malignancies

Project description:Older individuals account for one-third of new cancer cases and cancer-related deaths in the United States. Older individuals are more susceptible to having a decrease in physical and mental function following chemotherapy treatment. Geriatric assessment may provide a way to identify those older individuals at greatest risk of functional decline before treatment starts and during the period of treatment. Geriatric assessment includes a set of screening questions and tests designed to determine the physical and mental status of the individual at a point in time. Geriatric assessment also includes review of medications and other medical conditions the individual may have that may affect function. The investigators are conducting this study to determine if older individuals are able to complete the geriatric assessment using a computer format and how that corresponds to their treating physician’s assessment of their functional status before and after starting a new chemotherapy treatment for colon, rectal, breast or lung cancer. The investigators will also evaluate the usefulness of a computerized form of geriatric assessment.

E-MOSAIC Electronic Tool to Monitor Symptoms

Project description:RATIONALE: A hand held electronic tool used to monitor symptoms and assess quality of life may improve communication between patients and their doctors and improve the ability to plan treatment for patients with advanced cancer receiving palliative care. It is not yet known whether symptoms are better controlled with or without use of this electronic tool. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying an electronic tool to see how well it records cancer symptoms in patients with advanced cancer receiving palliative care.

Searching for Clinically Relevant Biomarkers in Geriatric Oncology.

Project description:Ageing, which is associated with a progressive decline and functional deterioration in multiple organ systems, is highly heterogeneous, both inter- and intraindividually. For this, tailored-made theranostics and optimum patient stratification become fundamental, when decision-making in elderly patients is considered. In particular, when cancer incidence and cancer-related mortality and morbidity are taken into account, elderly patient care is a public health concern. In this review, we focus on oncogeriatrics and highlight current opportunities and challenges with an emphasis on the unmet need of clinically relevant biomarkers in elderly cancer patients. We performed a literature search on PubMed and Scopus databases for articles published in English between 2000 and 2017 coupled to text mining and analysis. Considering the top insights, we derived from our literature analysis that information knowledge needs to turn into knowledge growth in oncogeriatrics towards clinically relevant biomarkers, cost-effective practices, updated educational schemes for health professionals (in particular, geriatricians and oncologists), and awareness of ethical issues. We conclude with an interdisciplinary call to omics, geriatricians, oncologists, informatics, and policy-makers communities that Big Data should be translated into decision-making in the clinic.

Toward Modernization of Geriatric Oncology by Digital Health Technologies.

Project description:The number of older adults with cancer is increasing. Over the past 3 decades, geriatric oncology research has focused on improving the assessment of frailty and fitness of older adults with cancer as well as methods of improving their outcomes. At the same time, advances in digital health technologies have opened new frontiers for reaching this goal. Digital health technologies encompass a variety of solutions, from electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROs) to Big Data and wireless sensors. These solutions have the potential to further advance our understanding of patients' experiences during cancer treatment. Whereas the data on the feasibility and utility of such solutions in the care of older adults with cancer are limited, interest from digital health oncology researchers to further explore the benefits of these products is increasing. In this article, we describe the focus of geriatric oncology, the rationale behind the need to explore digital health technologies in this setting, and emerging data and ongoing studies, as well as provide guidelines for proper selection, implementation, and testing of digital health solutions in the context of geriatric oncology.
