Quality of Life of Patients Over 75 Yars Undergoing Palliative Chemotherapy

ABSTRACT: The aim of this research is to evaluate the quality of life of patients over 75 years of age undergoing palliative chemotherapy for digestive cancer. It is a non-interventional study that evaluates the quality of life before and after a cycle of chemotherapy with a composite criterion including: a standardized questionnaire "Cancer specific quality of Life questionnaire" (QLQC30), an assessment of autonomy by "Activity of daily living" questionnaire (ADL), and the number of days of hospitalization.

Effect of iodine on early stage thyroid autonomy

Project description:Thyroid autonomy is a frequent cause of thyrotoxicosis in regions with iodine deficiency. Epidemiological data suggest that the prevalence of thyroid autonomy is not only inversely correlated with the ambient iodine supply, but that iodide may also influence the course of pre-existing thyroid autonomy with possibly different effects on thyroid growth and function. Iodine slows TSH effects on thyroid growth stimulation and this effect is more pronounced in thyrocytes with constitutive cAMP activation i.e. in thyroid autonomy. Iodine induced growth alteration in early stage thyroid autonomy is conferred by induction of apoptosis and G2/M arrest. Transcriptome analysis revealed significant modulation of gene networks relevant to cell adhesion, cadherin signalling and ion binding with more pronounced effects in constitutively active FRTL-5 cells compared to normal FRTL-5 cells. The aim was to study iodide-induced changes in global gene expression in an in vitro model of thyroid autonomy. This model makes use of FRTL-5 cells with stable expression of a constitutively activating TSH receptor mutation or wild type TSHR as a control.

Growth Signaling Autonomy in Circulating Tumor Cells Aids Metastatic Seeding

Project description:Self-sufficiency (autonomy) in growth signaling, the earliest recognized hallmark of cancer, is fuelled by the tumor cell’s ability to ‘secrete-and-sense’ growth factors; this translates into cell survival and proliferation that is self-sustained by auto-/paracrine secretion. Using breast cancer cells that are either endowed or impaired in growth signaling autonomy, here we reveal how autonomy impacts cancer progression. Autonomy is associated with enhanced molecular programs for stemness, immune evasiveness, proliferation, and epithelial-mesenchymal plasticity (EMP). Autonomy is both necessary and sufficient for anchorage-independent growth factor-restricted proliferation and resistance to anti-cancer drugs and is required for metastatic progression. Transcriptomic and proteomic studies show that autonomy is associated with self-sustained EGFR/ErbB signaling. A gene expression signature is derived (a.k.a., autonomy signature) which revealed that autonomy is induced in circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and particularly CTC clusters, the latter of which carry higher metastatic potential. Autonomy in CTCs tracks therapeutic response and prognosticates outcome. Autonomy is preserved during reversible (but not stable) EMT. These data support a role for growth signaling autonomy in multiple processes essential for the blood-borne dissemination of human breast cancer.

These data support a role for growth signaling autonomy in the blood-borne dissemination of human breast cancer.

Feet deformities are correlated with impaired balance and postural stability in seniors over 75.

Project description:ObjectiveUnderstanding the factors and mechanisms that determine balance in seniors appears vital in terms of their self-reliance and overall safety. The study aimed to determine the relationship between the features of feet structure and the indicators of postural stability in the elderly.MethodsThe study group comprised 80 seniors (41F, 39M; aged 75-85 years). CQ-ST podoscope and the CQ-Stab 2P two-platform posturograph were used as primary research tools. The data were analyzed based on Spearman's rank correlation and forward stepwise regression.ResultsAnalysis of forward stepwise regression identified the left foot length in females and Clarke's angle of the left foot in men as significant and independent predictors of postural up to 30% of the variance of dependent variables.ConclusionsLonger feet provide older women with better stability, whereas in men, the lowering of the longitudinal arch results in postural deterioration. In the elderly, the left lower limb shows greater activity in the stabilizing processes in the standing position than the right one. In gerontological rehabilitation special attention should be paid to the individually tailored, gender-specific treatment, with a view to enhancing overall safety and quality of seniors' lives.

Circulating microRNA as potential diagnostic biomarkers for sleep disorder

Project description:Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) was carried out on subjects who visited an oriental medicine clinic due to recurrent sleep disturbance, and 40 individuals (17 male and 23 female) were set as the sleep diorder (SD) group based on their scores on the sleep distrurbance questionnaire of Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI). The control group consisted of 40 healthy individuals (20 males and females each), as assessed by both subjective diagnosis and test for metabolic syndrome factors.Ten individuals (five males and females each) from the SD and the control group, respectively, were allocated for NGS analysis.
