Acceptance-based Intervention at Colorectal Cancer Patients

ABSTRACT: Taking into account the unavoidable effect of a major oncologic surgery commonly required for colorectal cancer patients and the recognized psychological and functional sequelae of the surgical treatment on their status, we will evaluate the influence of a psychological intervention, known as acceptance-based intervention, offered to those patients at the preoperative setting. Reduction of anxiety and assessmemt of indices of post-intervention psychological and functional recovery will be the primary goals of the study.

Project description:Intervention 1: Intervention group 1: Treatment sessions based on Unified Transdiagnostic Treatment book of Barlow & et al will be performed according to the protocol (1 session per week, each session about 90 minutes – 8 sessions during 2 months). Measurements will be performed again in three times: the middle of treatment, the end of treatment and once in two months after the end of treatment. Intervention 2: Intervention group 2: Treatment sessions based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy book of Hayes, Strosahl, & Wilson will be performed according to the protocol (1 session per week, each session about 90 minutes – 8 sessions during 2 months). Measurements will be performed again in three times: the middle of treatment, the end of treatment and once in two months after the end of treatment. Intervention 3: Control group: This group of 15 randomly selected individuals will receive no treatment for two months. However, the control group, which has been bothering to participate in the research, at the end of the study period is freely and intensively subject to one of the treatments of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or Unified Transdiagnostic Treatment. Primary outcome(s): Psychological distress. Timepoint: The middle of treatment, after treatment and two months after the end of treatment. In block randomization, the number of participants in all groups will be very close together by making blocks of sequences so that the same number of participants are assigned to study groups within each group. Project description:Individual differences in basal leukocyte gene expression profiles as a function of child's and parent's perception of family stress, and as a function of parent's psychological well-being. Gene expression profiling was carried out on peripheral blood mononuclear cell mRNA samples collected from 273 individuals (129 parent:child pairs + 15 parent-or-child) who were also assessed on their perceptions of family stress (both parent's and child's perception). Each dyad is labeled by a case ID, with p suffix indicating parent's gene expression profile and c suffix indicating child's gene expression profile. Variations in gene expression are analyzed as a function of both parent's perception of family stress and child's perception of family stress (using UCLA Life Stress Interview, as previously described: Hammen C (1991) Generation of stress in the course of unipolar depression.
