Molecular analysis of FIT interval colorectal cancers

Project description:To optimize a fecal immunochemical test-based screening program, the rate of missed colorectal cancers (CRCs), so-called FIT-interval CRCs, should be minimized. A specific molecular make-up of those CRCs could be an explanation for those interval CRCs. Knowledge of the molecular make-up of these missed lesions could facilitate more accurate detection of all precursor lesions. In this study we aimed to compare the molecular make-up of FIT-interval CRCs and screen-detected CRCs (SD-CRCs).

Project description:Early detecting and removing of colorectal advanced adenomas can reduce incidence of colorectal cancer. Because of the less bleeding of advanced adenomas, the sensitivity of existing quantitative fecal immunochemical test (qFIT) is unsatisfying. A new technology qFIT, which have a higher sensitivity in extremely low concentration of hemoglobin compared with existing commercially available qFIT, is developed and this study will prove the high diagnostic accuracy in detecting colorectal advanced adenoma.

Point of Care Faecal Immunochemical Testing for Colorectal Cancer

Project description:Blood that can be detected in stool via faecal immunochemical testing is a recognised risk factor for the presence of colorectal cancer. There are a number of point of care faecal immunochemical testing devices available. This study is to trial one of these machines into the clinical setting to see if the results are safe and accurate as a ‘rule out’ test for colorectal cancer. We will be investigating patients that present with symptoms or anaemia to their GP and are referred on the two-week rule pathway to our hospital. It has also been advocated that digital rectal examination (which is part of the routine assessment for a patient presenting to colorectal clinic) provides an opportunity to use a small sample of stool from a gloved finger to perform faecal immunochemical testing. We will be comparing a patient provided sample with a DRE sample on a standard laboratory-based machine.

This study will prove the diagnostic accuracy of us-qFIT in detecting colorectal advanced adenomas.
