CentralAfricanCMC_Pemberton

ABSTRACT: The CentralAfricanCMC_Pemberton dataset encompasses 153,798 SNPs from the Illumina Cardio-MetaboChip (Voight et al. 2012) genotyped in 406 individuals from 19 Central African Populations from Gabon, Cameroon, Centralafrican Republic and Uganda). Individual phenotypic and cultural information at the individual level for this data set encompass gender, lifestyle (hunter-gatherer or farmer), and, when available, stature phenotype (standing height in cm, sitting-height in cm, and weight in kg). Other cultural, linguistic, and geographical location information about the sampled populations can be found in Pemberton et al. , Human Genetics, 2018 (https://doi.org/10.1007/s00439-018-1902-3).This dataset can only be accessed and used for non-commercial research purposes with a finality complying with the informed consent provided by Central African donors for the study of human evolutionary history only.

Project description:B. napus, a widely cultivated oilseed crop spanning roughly 35 million hectares world-wide (Faostat , 2022), faces various stress factors including salt stress which reduces plant height, size, and yield (Shahza d et al., 2022; Naheed et al., 2021). Endophytic microorganisms are known to promote plant growth and biomass production (Rho et al., 2018, Azad et al., 2016, Zhang et al., 2019). In this study, inoculation with endophyte Acremonium alternatum increased both fresh and dry weight under salt stress conditions. Further molecular analyses provided insights into potential mechanisms involved, highlighting a putative role of abscisic acid in mediating ROS metabolism and ion sequestering. These findings contribute to our understanding of plant-fungi interactions and offer promising leads for developing novel biological agents to improve crop production under the challenges posed by climate change.

A genome scan for genes underlying adult body size differences between Central African hunter-gatherers and farmers.

Project description:The evolutionary and biological bases of the Central African pygmy phenotype, a characteristic of rainforest huntergatherers defined by reduced body size compared with neighboring farmers, remain largely unknown. Here, we perform a joint investigation in Central African hunter-gatherers and farmers of adult standing height, sitting height, leg length, and body mass index (BMI), considering 358 hunter-gatherers and 169 farmers with genotypes for 153,798 SNPs. In addition to reduced standing heights, hunter-gatherers have shorter sitting heights and leg lengths and higher sitting/standing height ratios than farmers and lower BMI for males. Standing height, sitting height, and leg length are strongly correlated with inferred levels of farmer genetic ancestry, whereas BMI is only weakly correlated, perhaps reflecting greater contributions of non-genetic factors to body weight than to height. Single- and multi-marker association tests identify one region and eight genes associated with hunter-gatherer/farmer status, and 24 genes associated with the height-related traits. Many of these genes have putative functions consistent with roles in determining their associated traits and the pygmy phenotype, and they include three associated with standing height in non-Africans (PRKG1, DSCAM, MAGI2). We find evidence that European height-associated SNPs or variants in linkage disequilibrium with them contribute to standing- and sitting-height determination in Central Africans, but not to the differential status of hunter-gatherers and farmers. These findings provide new insights into the biological basis of the pygmy phenotype, and they highlight the potential of cross-population studies for exploring the genetic basis of phenotypes that vary naturally across populations. Learning what encourages people and what keeps people from getting colorectal cancer screening may help researchers develop an educational tool for colorectal cancer screening that addresses colorectal cancer knowledge, beliefs, and cultural factors in underserved populations.

Genome wide evidence of Austronesian-Bantu admixture and cultural reversion in a hunter-gatherer group of Madagascar

Project description:Linguistic and cultural evidence suggests that Madagascar was the final point of two major dispersals of Austronesian and Bantu speaking populations. Today, Mikea are described as the last known Malagasy population reported to be still practising a hunter-gatherer life-style. It is unclear, however, whether Mikea descend from a remnant population that existed before the arrival of Austronesian and Bantu agriculturalists or whether it is only their life-style that separates them from the other contemporary populations of South Madagascar. In order to address these questions we have performed a genome wide analysis of >700,000 SNP markers on 21 Mikea, 24 Vezo and 24 Temoro individuals together with 50 individuals from Bajo and Lebbo populations from Indonesia. Our analyses of these data in the context of data available from other Southeast Asian and African populations reveal that all three Malagasy populations are derived from the same admixture event involving Austronesian and Bantu sources. In contrast to the fact that most of the vocabulary of the Malagasy speakers is derived from the Barito group of the Austronesian language family we observe that only one third of their genetic ancestry is related to the populations of Java-Kalimantan-Sulawesi area. Because no additional ancestry components distinctive to for the Mikea were found, it is likely that they have adopted their hunter-gatherer way of life by through cultural reversion. 69 samples were analysed with the Illumina platform OmniExpress BeadChips and are described herein.
