Project description:Water availability is a key determinant of terrestrial plant productivity. Many climate models predict that water stress will increasingly challenge agricultural yields and exacerbate projected food deficits. To ensure food security and increase agricultural efficiency, crop water productivity must be increased. Research over past decades has established that the phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) is a central regulator of water use and directly regulates stomatal opening and transpiration. In this study, we investigated whether the water productivity of wheat could be improved by increasing its ABA sensitivity. We show that overexpression of a wheat ABA receptor increases wheat ABA sensitivity, which significantly lowers a plant’s lifetime water consumption. Physiological analyses demonstrated that this water-saving trait is a consequence of reduced transpiration and a concomitant increase in photosynthetic activity, which together boost grain production per liter of water and protect productivity during water deficit. Our findings provide a general strategy for increasing water productivity that should be applicable to other crops because of the high conservation of the ABA signaling pathway.

Project description:Drought is an intermittent disturbance of the water cycle that profoundly affects the terrestrial carbon cycle. However, the response of the coupled water and carbon cycles to drought and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here we provide the first global synthesis of the drought effect on ecosystem water use efficiency (WUE?=?gross primary production (GPP)/evapotranspiration (ET)). Using two observational WUE datasets (i.e., eddy-covariance measurements at 95 sites (526 site-years) and global gridded diagnostic modelling based on existing observation and a data-adaptive machine learning approach), we find a contrasting response of WUE to drought between arid (WUE increases with drought) and semi-arid/sub-humid ecosystems (WUE decreases with drought), which is attributed to different sensitivities of ecosystem processes to changes in hydro-climatic conditions. WUE variability in arid ecosystems is primarily controlled by physical processes (i.e., evaporation), whereas WUE variability in semi-arid/sub-humid regions is mostly regulated by biological processes (i.e., assimilation). We also find that shifts in hydro-climatic conditions over years would intensify the drought effect on WUE. Our findings suggest that future drought events, when coupled with an increase in climate variability, will bring further threats to semi-arid/sub-humid ecosystems and potentially result in biome reorganization, starting with low-productivity and high water-sensitivity grassland.

Project description:Water use efficiency (WUE) measures the trade-off between carbon gain and water loss of terrestrial ecosystems, and better understanding its dynamics and controlling factors is essential for predicting ecosystem responses to climate change. We assessed the magnitude, spatial patterns, and trends of WUE of China's terrestrial ecosystems and its responses to drought using a process-based ecosystem model. During the period from 2000 to 2011, the national average annual WUE (net primary productivity (NPP)/evapotranspiration (ET)) of China was 0.79?g C kg(-1) H2O. Annual WUE decreased in the southern regions because of the decrease in NPP and the increase in ET and increased in most northern regions mainly because of the increase in NPP. Droughts usually increased annual WUE in Northeast China and central Inner Mongolia but decreased annual WUE in central China. "Turning-points" were observed for southern China where moderate and extreme droughts reduced annual WUE and severe drought slightly increased annual WUE. The cumulative lagged effect of drought on monthly WUE varied by region. Our findings have implications for ecosystem management and climate policy making. WUE is expected to continue to change under future climate change particularly as drought is projected to increase in both frequency and severity.

Project description:<p>The intensity and frequency of precipitation events are predicted to change over the coming decades. For many areas, longer periods without rainfall are expected. We investigated the importance of irrigation frequency under water deficit conditions for growth, physiology and chemistry of wheat (<em>Triticum aestivum</em>). Drought-stressed plants received 40% of the water provided for control plants and were either watered every other day (continuous drought, cd) or every eight days (pulsed drought, pd). Maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm), aboveground biomass, applied water use efficiency (WUEapl) and the flag leaf metabolome were assessed twice during development. Fv/Fm was not affected by irrigation. Drought-exposed plants produced less biomass, but had higher WUEapl than control plants. More metabolic features responded to the pd compared to the cd treatment and more features were increased than decreased in pool size in flag leaves. Salicylic acid glucoside was generally decreased under drought. In pd plants, two benzoxazinoid glucosides were enhanced at the first time point and concentrations of several flavonoid glycosides were modulated. This study extends our knowledge about drought effects on wheat; it highlights that the frequency of watering determines how plant growth, physiology and metabolism are affected by drought.</p>

Project description:Irregular precipitations are likely to affect maize production in the future. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) have been reported to increase maize resistance to drought, but their role on the short-term inorganic phosphorus (Pi) uptake, leaf gas exchange parameters and water content during recovery after drought remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated these parameters in maize plants colonized or not by Rhizophagus irregularis MUCL 41833. The mycorrhizal (M) and non-mycorrhizal (NM) plants were grown for a 3-week period in a circulatory semi-hydroponic cultivation system and were submitted to well-, moderately-, or poorly-watered conditions (WW, MW, and PW, respectively), the two latter conditions corresponding to moderate and severe droughts. The plants were then watered at field capacity for 42 h with a Pi impoverished Hoagland nutrient solution and the dynamic of Pi depletion in the nutrient solution, corresponding to Pi uptake/immobilization by the maize-AMF associates, was evaluated at 0, 9, 21, and 42 h. The CO2 assimilation rate (A), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration (E), and instantaneous water use efficiency (WUEi) were also assessed at 0 and 42 h of circulation. Plant biomass, plant water content, phosphorus concentration and content, and leaf relative water content were evaluated at harvest. During recovery, Pi uptake was significantly higher in M versus NM plants whatever the water regime (WR) applied before recovery. AMF did not affect leaf gas exchange parameters before recovery but modulated gs and E, and improved WUEi after 42 h of recovery. At harvest, no significant difference in dry biomass was found between M and NM plants but shoot fresh weight was significantly higher in M plants. This resulted in an increased shoot water content in M plants grown in the MW and PW treatments. Surprisingly, leaf relative water content was significantly lower in M plants when compared with NM plants. Finally, P content and concentration were significantly higher in roots but not in shoots of M plants. Our results suggested that AMF can play a role in drought resistance of maize plants by increasing the Pi uptake and WUEi during recovery after drought stress.
