Project description:Metal coordination bonds are widely used as the dynamic cross-linkers to construct self-healing hydrogels. However, it remains challenging to independently improve the toughness of metal coordinated hydrogels without affecting the stretchability and self-healing properties, as all these features are directly correlated with the dynamic properties of the same metal coordination bonds. In this work, using histidine-Zn2+ binding as an example, we show that the coordination number (the number of binding sites in each cross-linking ligand) is an important parameter for the mechanical strength of the hydrogels. By increasing the coordination number of the binding site, the mechanical strength of the hydrogels can be greatly improved without sacrificing the stretchability and self-healing properties. By adjusting the peptide and Zn2+ concentrations, the hydrogels can achieve a set of demanding mechanical features, including the Young's modulus of 7-123 kPa, fracture strain of 434-781%, toughness of 630-1350 kJ m-3, and self-healing time of ~1 h. We anticipate the engineered hydrogels can find broad applications in a variety of biomedical fields. Moreover, the concept of improving the mechanical strength of metal coordinated hydrogels by tuning the coordination number may inspire the design of other dynamically cross-linked hydrogels with further improved mechanical performance.

Project description:Silicon Carbide (SiC) is a promising cladding material for accident-tolerant fuel in light water reactors due to its excellent resistance to chemical attacks at high temperatures, which can prevent severe accident-induced environmental disasters. Although it has been known for decades that radiation-induced swelling at low temperatures is driven by the formation of black spot defects with sizes smaller than 2 nm in irradiated SiC, the structure of these defect clusters and the mechanism of lattice expansion have not been clarified and remain as one of the most important scientific issues in nuclear materials research. Here we report the atomic configuration of defect clusters using Cs-corrected transmission electron microscopy and molecular dynamics to determine the mechanism of these defects to radiation swelling. This study also provides compelling evidence that irradiation-induced point defect clusters are vacancy-rich clusters and lattice expansion results from the homogenous distribution of unrecovered interstitials in the material.

Project description:Supertetrahedral chalcogenido (semi)metalate cluster-based frameworks possess high selectivity for alkali metal cations, matching the specific charge density of their inner surfaces, which enables their use as ion-exchange materials. Aggregates of the supertetrahedral chalcogenido metalate cluster offer even new perspectives for metal ion capture and separation. Herein, we report on ionothermal preparation of two corresponding model compounds, (C2C1Im)7[Cs@GeII4(GeIV4Se10)4] (1) and (C2C1Im)10[Na5(CN)6@Cu6(Ge4Se10)4(Cu)] (2). Their formation is reliant on one specific cation type each, Cs+ for 1 and Na+ for 2, thus providing promising separation potential during crystallization. Compound 1 is based on the largest discrete binary selenido germanate cluster reported to date and the first mixed-valent chalcogenido germanate(II/IV) supertetrahedron. Moreover, it adds to the few examples of chalcogenides capable of capturing Cs+ ions. Its high selectivity for Cs+ compared to that of Li+, Na+, K+, and Rb+ was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Quantum chemical studies indicate that smaller ions, K+ and Rb+, could also be embedded in an isolated cluster assembly, but as the cluster aggregate slightly distorts for crystallization, the selectivity for Cs+ becomes exclusive in the salt. The anionic substructure of compound 2 is based on a two-dimensional network of supramolecular assemblies and exhibits an exclusive preference for Na+. This work thus provides the first comprehensive insight into the selective incorporation of specific alkali metal ions into supramolecular aggregates of supertetrahedral chalcogenide clusters, as a promising basis for new ion trapping techniques─especially for heavy alkali metal ions that pose environmental challenges.

Project description:Design and synthesis of environmentally friendly adsorbents with high adsorption capacities are urgently needed to control pollution of water resources. In this work, a calcium ion-induced approach was used to synthesize sodium alginate fibroid hydrogel (AFH). The as-prepared AFH has certain mechanical strength, and the mechanical strength is enhanced especially after the adsorption of heavy metal ions, which is very convenient for the recovery. AFH exhibited excellent adsorption performances for Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ ions and displayed very high saturated adsorption capacities (Qe) of 315.92 mg·g-1 (Cu2+), 232.35 mg·g-1 (Cd2+), and 465.22 mg·g-1 (Pb2+) with optimized pH values (3.0-4.0) and temperature (303 K). The study of isotherms and kinetics indicated that adsorption processes of heavy metal ions fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the Langmuir model. Pb2+ was found to have the strongest competitiveness among the three heavy metal ions. Thus, AFH has great application prospects in the field of heavy metal ions removing from wastewater.

Project description:With electrospray ionization from aqueous solutions, trivalent metal ions readily adduct to small peptides resulting in formation of predominantly (peptide + M(T) - H)(2+), where M(T) = La, Tm, Lu, Sm, Ho, Yb, Pm, Tb, or Eu, for peptides with molecular weights below ~1000 Da, and predominantly (peptide + M(T))(3+) for larger peptides. ECD of (peptide + M(T) - H)(2+) results in extensive fragmentation from which nearly complete sequence information can be obtained, even for peptides for which only singly protonated ions are formed in the absence of the metal ions. ECD of these doubly charged complexes containing M(T) results in significantly higher electron capture efficiency and sequence coverage than peptide-divalent metal ion complexes that have the same net charge. Formation of salt-bridge structures in which the metal ion coordinates to a carboxylate group are favored even for (peptide + M(T))(3+). ECD of these latter complexes for large peptides results in electron capture by the protonation site located remotely from the metal ion and predominantly c/z fragments for all metals, except Eu(3+), which undergoes a one electron reduction and only loss of small neutral molecules and b/y fragments are formed. These results indicate that solvation of the metal ion in these complexes is extensive, which results in the electrochemical properties of these metal ions being similar in both the peptide environment and in bulk water.

Project description:Periodontitis and hypertension often occur as comorbidities. In the face of severe periodontitis patients with hypertension, periodontists often have to give priority to control the patient's blood pressure before surgical treatment, and how to use drugs also brings a lot of inconvenience for clinical treatment. In the stage of periodontal basic treatment, it is a problem that needs to be solved to treat periodontal inflammation and control blood pressure at the same time, so as to achieve “co-treatment of comorbidities”. To this issue, we proposed a controlled-release composite hydrogel approach with dual antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities as a resolution for pathogen-originated periodontitis. Specifically, chitosan (CS) with inherent antibacterial properties was crosslinked with antimicrobial peptide (AMP) modified polyethylene glycol (PEG) to form the dual antibacterial hydrogel (CS-PA). Subsequently, curcumin nanoparticles (CNP) were encapsulated in the hydrogel to impart anti-inflammatory activities. In the mouse model of periodontitis complicated with hypertension, CS-PA/CNP was applied to gingival sulcus, found that it produced a perfect therapeutic effect on periodontitis and hypertension at the same time. The antibacterial experiments showed that CS-PA/CNP had an excellent inhibitory effect on a variety of periodontal pathogens, demonstrated the potential regulatory ability of the microbiota. In addition, cytological studies revealed the molecular mechanism that CS-PA/CNP enhanced antioxidant capacity of macrophages through the glutathione metabolism pathway, while enhancing their anti-inflammatory capacity. In conclusion, CS-PA/CNP has demonstrated its superior therapeutic effect and potential clinical translational value in the treatment of periodontitis and hypertension, which also serves as a drug delivery platform to provide combinatorial therapeutic options for periodontitis with complicated pathogenesis.

Project description:The demand for rare earth metal increases rapidly in the modern high-tech industry and therefore the accumulation of rare earth metal ions from an aqueous environment becomes a significant concern worldwide. In this paper, a water-recyclable chitosan-based La3+-imprinted thermoresponsive hydrogel (CLIT) was prepared to accumulate La3+ from solution. The CLIT was characterized by DSC, FITR, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, and SEM, which revealed obvious reversible thermosensitivity and imprinted sites of La3+ ions. An adsorption capacity of 112.21 mg/g to La3+ ions was achieved on CLIT under its optimum adsorption conditions (pH 5, 50 °C, 60 min). The adsorption could be well illustrated by second-order kinetics and Freundlich isotherm models. The La3+-adsorbed CLIT could be recycled only by rinsing with 10 °C cold water, with a desorption rate of 96.72%. After ten cycles of adsorption-desorption, CLIT retained good adsorption capability. In the solution containing six ions, the adsorption coefficients kLa3+/Mn+ of CLIT were 2.04-3.51 times that of non-imprinted hydrogel, with kLa3+/Y3+, kLa3+/Gd3+, kLa3+/Al3+, kLa3+/Fe3+ and kLa3+/Cu2+ being 1.67, 2.04, 3.15, 2.72 and 4.84, respectively.

Project description:The development of simple and safe methods for recovering environmental pollutants, such as heavy metals, is needed for sustainable environmental management. Short elastin-like peptide (ELP) analogues conjugated with metal chelating agents are considered to be useful as metal sequestering agents as they are readily produced, environment friendly, and the metal binding domain can be selected based on any target metal of interest. Due to the temperature dependent self-assembly of ELP, the peptide-based sequestering agents can be transformed from the solution state into the particles that chelate metal ions, which can then be collected as precipitates. In this study, we developed a peptide-based sequestering agent, AADAAC-(FPGVG)4, by introducing the metal-binding sequence AADAAC on the N-terminus of a short ELP, (FPGVG)4. In turbidity measurements, AADAAC-(FPGVG)4 revealed strong self-assembling ability in the presence of metal ions such as Cd2+ and Zn2+. The results from colorimetric analysis indicated that AADAAC-(FPGVG)4 could capture Cd2+ and Zn2+. Furthermore, AADAAC-(FPGVG)4 that bound to metal ions could be readily recycled by treatment with acidic solution without compromising its metal binding affinity. The present study indicates that the fusion of the metal-binding sequence and ELP is a useful and powerful strategy to develop cost-effective heavy metal scavenging agents with low environmental impacts.
