In vivo assessment of long-distance axon growth ability in the developing mammalian central nervous system.

ABSTRACT: We established a novel microsurgical approach to investigate long-distance axon growth ability of corticospinal neurons (CSN). CSN axons lose their long-distance growth ability in a segmentally distinct manner such that this ability is intact at some spinal levels but completely abolished at other levels at the same developmental time. Since these segmentally distinct responses are already evident 72h after microlesions, we performed unbiased transcriptomics of the spinal cord after different microlesions, to identify potential underlying reasons for these distinct long-distance growth responses.
