Project description:Analysis of transcript abundance estimates as a function generalized purpose in life and work-related dimensions of meaning. Gene expression profiling was conducted on peripheral blood samples collected from adult male employees of a Japanese technology firm. In addition to health-relevant background characteristics (age, indcome, body mass index/BMI, smoking history, heavy alcohol consumption history), participants were also assessed for hedonic and eudaimonic dimensions of generalized well-being (assesed by the Short Flourishing Scale, Keyes, C (2006). The Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (MHC-SF) for adults) and work-specific variables including job evaluation (assessed by a12-item scale tapping both perceived significance of the firmâs work, through items such as âI am proud of my companyâ and âI think my company is really good,â as well as perceived significance of oneâs own contribution to the firm's work, through items such as, âI think other employees within my company respect my workâ), and workplace interdependence and independence of the self and coworkers (using the Singelis Self-Construal Scale, Singelis, T. M. (1994). The Measurement of Independent and Interdependent Self-Construals. Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, 20(5), 580â591). Higher values of each scale score indicate greater levels of well-being, job satisfaction, etc. Dichotomous variables were coded 0=no/absent and 1=yes/present. Valid gene expression data are available for 106 participants.

Project description:Height loss starting in middle age is reported to be associated with increased all-cause and cardiovascular mortality later in life. However, the mechanisms underlying this association are unclear. Hypoxia and oxidative stress, which are known causes of cardiovascular disease, could be reduced by hemoglobin. Therefore, hemoglobin could be inversely associated with height loss. However, high body mass index (BMI) is a known risk factor for intervertebral disc disorder, a known cause of height loss in adults. High BMI might confound the association between hemoglobin and height loss. Therefore, we performed analyses stratified by BMI status. To clarify the association between hemoglobin and height loss, we conducted a retrospective study of Japanese workers (6,471 men and 3,180 women) aged 40-74 years. Height loss was defined as being in the highest quintile of height decrease per year. In men overall and men with BMI <25 kg/m2, hemoglobin was significantly inversely associated with height loss; but no association was observed for men with high BMI (BMI ≥25 kg/m2) and for women. For men, after adjusting for known cardiovascular risk factors, adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for height loss with each 1 standard deviation (SD) increase in hemoglobin (1.0 g/dL for men and 0.8g/dL for women) were 0.89 (0.83, 0.95) for men overall, 0.82 (0.75, 0.89) for men who do not have high BMI, and 1.01 (0.92, 1.12) for men with high BMI. For women, the corresponding values were 0.97 (0.89, 1.06), 0.98 (0.89, 1.09), and 0.93 (0.75, 1.15) respectively. Hemoglobin is significantly inversely associated with height loss in men who do not have high BMI, but not in men with high BMI or women. These results help clarify the mechanisms underlying height loss, which has been reported to be associated with a higher risk of mortality in adults.

Project description:Low testosterone concentrations are associated with disrupted sleep, and high levels of cortisol, which is elevated in response to stress, lead to insomnia. This study aimed to investigate the associations of testosterone and cortisol concentrations with sleep quality and to examine potential interactions between them in Japanese working men. This study was a cross-sectional design, and testosterone and cortisol concentrations in blood were the exposure variables and sleep parameters were the outcome variables. The Japanese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to measure sleep quality, and it included the total duration of sleep, time in bed (TIB), and sleep efficacy. We included 178 men (mean age = 49.1 years, standard deviation = 9.0) who completed all components in the questionnaire related to sleep and provided blood samples. Testosterone and cortisol concentrations were negatively associated with TIB (standardized beta = -0.15 and -0.24, p < 0.05, respectively), while only testosterone concentrations were positively associated with sleep efficacy (standardized beta = 0.15, p < 0.05). An interaction effect of testosterone and cortisol was significant for TIB and sleep efficacy (standardized beta for interaction term = 0.40, p < 0.001 and -0.22, p = 0.012, respectively). When stratified by cortisol concentrations, the associations between testosterone concentrations and sleep parameters were modified. Our findings suggest that associations between testosterone concentrations and sleep parameters are stronger at low cortisol concentrations, but not at high cortisol concentrations. High cortisol concentrations may diminish associations between low testosterone concentrations and diminished sleep efficacy.

Project description:A pseudo cohort study using national cross-sections (2001, 2004, 2007, and 2010) was conducted to examine differences in smoking prevalence under different smoking ban policies such as a complete workplace indoor smoking ban (early or recent implementation) and a partial smoking ban among male public workers and husbands of female nonsmoking public workers. The effectiveness of smoking bans was estimated by difference-in-differences (DID) with age group stratification. The results varied considerably by age and implementation period. Although DID estimates (positive value of DID estimate represents smoking cessation percentage) for both smoking bans on total male smoking were not significant, the over-40 age group indicated a significant DID estimate of 5.0 (95% CI: 0.2, 9.8) for the recent smoking ban. For female workers' husbands' smoking, the over-40 age group indicated positive, but not significant, DID estimates for the early and recent smoking bans of 7.2 (-4.7, 19.2) and 8.4 (-2.0, 18.7), respectively. A complete indoor workplace smoking ban, particularly one recently implemented among public office workers aged over 40, may reduce male workers' smoking and female workers' husbands' smoking compared with a partial smoking ban, but the conclusion remains tentative because of methodological weaknesses in the study.

Project description:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the associations among procrastination (time inconsistency), work environment and obesity-related factors in Japanese male workers. DESIGN:Cross-sectional study. SETTING:Data were collected at two work sites of Japanese electronics manufacturing company in 2015. PARTICIPANTS:795 full-time male workers in a Japanese electric company, aged 35-64 years, who underwent health checkups in 2015. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:Body mass index (BMI), adult weight change, obesity (BMI ?25?kg/m2), adult weight gain over 10?kg (AWG10) and metabolic syndrome (MetS). Multivariable linear and logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the associations of procrastination assessed by using a one-item questionnaire and white-collar and blue-collar work with obesity-related factors. RESULTS:White-collar workers with high procrastination levels showed positive associations with BMI (B: 0.75, 95% CI 0.06 to 1.44) and adult weight change (B: 1.77, 95%?CI 0.26 to 3.29), and had increased odds of AWG10 (OR: 1.85, 95%?CI 1.04 to 3.29) and MetS (OR: 2.29 95%?CI 1.18 to 4.44) after adjustment for age, education, work-related factors and lifestyle factors. However, such positive associations were not observed among blue-collar workers. CONCLUSIONS:Procrastination and white-collar work might have a joint effect on weight gain during adulthood and consequential obesity.

Project description:AimTo determine the optimal cut-off value of serum total adiponectin for managing the risk of developing metabolic syndrome (MetS) in male Japanese workers.MethodsA total of 365 subjects without MetS aged 20-60 years were followed up prospectively for a mean of 3.1 years. The accelerated failure-time model was used to estimate time ratio (TR) and cut-off value for developing MetS.ResultsDuring follow-up, 45 subjects developed MetS. Age-adjusted TR significantly declined with decreasing total adiponectin level (≤ 4.9, 5.0-6.6, 6.7-8.8 and ≥ 8.9 μg/ml, P for trend = 0.003). In multivariate analyses, TR of MetS was 0.12 (95% CI 0.02-0.78; P = 0.03) in subjects with total adiponectin level of 5.0-6.6 μg/ml, and 0.15 (95% CI 0.02-0.97; P = 0.047) in subjects with total adiponectin level ≤ 4.9 μg/ml compared with those with total adiponectin level ≥ 8.9 μg/ml. The accelerated failure-time model showed that the optimal cut-off value of total adiponectin for managing the risk of developing MetS was 6.2 μg/ml. In the multivariate-adjusted model, the mean time to the development of MetS was 78% shorter for total adiponectin level ≤ 6.2 μg/ml compared with > 6.2 μg/ml (TR 0.22, 95% CI: 0.08-0.64, P = 0.005).ConclusionOur findings suggest that the cut-off value for managing the risk of developing MetS is 6.2 μg/ml in male Japanese workers. Subjects with total adiponectin level ≤ 6.2 μg/ml developed MetS more rapidly than did those with total adiponectin level > 6.2 μg/ml.
