Project description:Soil microorganisms play an irreplaceable role in agricultural production, however, an understanding of response of soil microorganisms to slow-release and common fertilizer applications is limited. In this study, different amounts of slow- release fertilizer were used to overwintering Chinese chives growing area in a plastic greenhouse to investigate the effects of on rhizosphere soil physicochemical properties and soil microbial communities (bacteria and fungi) of Chinese chives. The result displayed that application of slow-release fertilizer significantly improved soil nutrients, soil enzyme activity, and soil microbial community structure and diversity compared to conventional fertilizer application. Compared with T1 treatment, the content of total nitrogen (TN) and available phosphorus (AP), and the SU-E activity in the soil of T2 (NPK: 62.8 kg · 667 m-2) increased by 42.58%, 16.67%, and 9.70%, respectively, showing the best effects. In addition, soil bacterial diversity index and soil microbial community structure were improved as indicated by increased relative abundance of each species, such as Byssovorax, Sandaracinus, and Cellvibrio. Oppositely, the both soil fungal diversity and the number of species decreased after fertilizationthe relative abundance of Ascomycota increased in each fertilization treatment detected by ITS sequencing. Further, the relative abundance of pathogenic fungi such as Pezizomycetes, Cantharellales, and Pleosporales decreased in the T2 treatment. Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA) showed that both the amount of fertilizer applied and the type of fertilizer applied affected the soil microbial community structure. RDA evidenced that soil bacteria, Proteobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes, were closely correlated with soil AN, SOM, and AK. Acidobacteria were closely correlated with soil pH, TN, and AP. Ascomycota was closely correlated with soil pH and TN. In conclusion, the application of slow-release fertilizers and reduced fertilizer applicationcould improve soil physical and chemical properties as well as soil microbial community structure and diversity, contributing to sustainable soil development. The recommended fertilization rate for overwintering Chinese chives is NPK: 62.8 kg · 667 m−2.

Project description:Fertilizer input is one of the effective forest management practices, which improves soil nutrients and microbial community compositions and promotes forest productivity. However, few studies have explored the response of rhizosphere soil microbial communities to various fertilization regimes across seasonal dynamics. Here, we collected the rhizosphere soil samples from Phoebe bournei plantations to investigate the response of community assemblages and microbial interactions of the soil microbiome to the short-term application of four typical fertilizer practices (including chemical fertilizer (CF), organic fertilizer (OF), compound microbial fertilizer (CMF), and no fertilizer control (CK)). The amendments of organic fertilizer and compound microbial fertilizer altered the composition of rhizosphere soil bacterial and fungal communities, respectively. The fertilization regime significantly affected bacterial diversity rather than fungal diversity, and rhizosphere fungi responded more sensitively than bacteria to season. Fertilization-induced fungal networks were more complex than bacterial networks. Stochastic processes governed both rhizosphere soil bacterial and fungal communities, and drift and dispersal limitation dominated soil fungal and bacterial communities, respectively. Collectively, these findings demonstrate contrasting responses to community assemblages and interactions of rhizosphere bacteria and fungi to fertilizer practices. The application of organic fertilization strengthens microbial interactions and changes the succession of key taxa in the rhizosphere habitat. Project description:The application of phosphorus (P) fertilizer effectively improves soil P availability, but it also affects soil microbial communities. However, the responses of soil bacterial communities and P forms to long-term P fertilization, and the relationships of bacterial communities with soil P forms remain unclear in P-deficient field. In this study, the impacts of different P fertilization treatments (chemical nitrogen and potassium (NK); chemical N, P and K (NPK); and NPK plus straw (NPKS)) on the bacterial communities and P forms in sugarcane rhizosphere (RS) and bulk soils (BS) were evaluated. Compared with the NK, the NPK and NPKS treatments significantly (P<0.05) increased the yield and quality characters of sugarcane, especially under NPKS. Additionally, P fertilization significantly increased the available P (AP), soluble inorganic P (Pi) and retained Pi in both the RS and BS, but they significantly increased the Chao1 and Shannon index only in the BS; and almost all these indices were significantly higher in the RS than in the BS. The bacterial community compositions were also significantly altered by P fertilization, with major changes in the RS and minor changes in the BS. The bacterial genera that were enriched in the sugarcane rhizosphere mainly included Bradyrhizobium, Rhodanobacter, Pseudolabrys, Conexibacter, and Burkholderia-Caballeronia-Paraburkholderia, some of which potentially promote the plant growth. Compared to NK, functional groups involved in the cycling of carbon, N, and sulfur significantly increased or decreased with fertilizer P application. Moreover, the relative abundances of many bacterial species were significantly correlated with the soil P forms. In conclusion, long-term P fertilization altered bacterial structure and functions in P-deficient sugarcane soil, which could help the soil P cycling and suppling. The results provide useful information to stimulate the power of the microbes by fertilization measures to improve soil nutrients and crop production.

Project description:Phosphate fertilization is a common practice in agriculture worldwide, and several commercial products are widely used. Triple superphosphate (TSP) is an excellent soluble phosphorus (P) source. However, its high cost of production makes the long-term use of crude rock phosphate (RP) a more attractive alternative in developing countries, albeit its influence on plant-associated microbiota remains unclear. Here, we compared long-term effects of TSP and RP fertilization on the structure of maize rhizosphere microbial community using next generation sequencing. Proteobacteria were dominant in all conditions, whereas Oxalobacteraceae (mainly Massilia and Herbaspirillum) was enriched in the RP-amended soil. Klebsiella was the second most abundant taxon in the RP-treated soil. Burkholderia sp. and Bacillus sp. were enriched in the RP-amended soil when compared to the TSP-treated soil. Regarding fungi, Glomeromycota showed highest abundance in RP-amended soils, and the main genera were Scutellospora and Racocetra. These taxa are already described as important for P solubilization/acquisition in RP-fertilized soil. Maize grown on TSP and RP-treated soil presented similar productivity, and a positive correlation was detected for P content and the microbial community of the soils. The results suggest changes of the microbial community composition associated to the type of phosphate fertilization. Whilst it is not possible to establish causality relations, our data highlights a few candidate taxa that could be involved in RP solubilization and plant growth promotion. Moreover, this can represent a shorter path for further studies aiming the isolation and validation of the taxa described here concerning P release on the soil plant system and their use as bioinoculants.
