Project description:The agroindustry generates a large amount of waste. In postharvest, food losses can reach up to 50%. This waste represents a source of contamination of soil, air, and bodies of water. This represents a problem for the environment as well as for public health. However, this waste is an important source of bioactive compounds, such as phenolic compounds, terpenes, and ?-glucans, among others. Several biological activities have been attributed to these compounds; for example, antioxidant, antimicrobial, gut microbiota, and immune system modulators. These properties have been associated with improvements in health. Recently, the approach of using these bioactive compounds as food additives for aquaculture have been addressed, where it is sought that organisms, in addition to growing, preserve their health and become disease resistant. The exploitation of agro-industrial waste as a source of bioactive compounds for aquaculture has a triple objective-to provide added value to production chains, reduce pollution, and improve the well-being of organisms through nutrition. However, to make use of the waste, it is necessary to revalue them, mainly by determining their biological effects in aquaculture organisms. The composition of bioactive compounds of agro-industrial wastes, their biological properties, and their application in aquaculture will be addressed here.

Project description:On a worldwide scale, food demand is increasing as a consequence of global population growth. This makes companies push their food supply chains' limits with a consequent increase in generation of large amounts of untreated waste that are considered of no value to them. Biorefinery technologies offer a suitable alternative for obtaining high-value products by using unconventional raw materials, such as agro-industrial waste. Currently, most biorefineries aim to take advantage of specific residues (by either chemical, biotechnological, or physical treatments) provided by agro-industry in order to develop high-value products for either in-house use or for sale purposes. This article reviews the currently explored possibilities to apply biorefinery-known processes to banana agro-industrial waste in order to generate high-value products out of this residual biomass source. Firstly, the Central and Latin American context regarding biomass and banana residues is presented, followed by advantages of using banana residues as raw materials for the production of distinct biofuels, nanocellulose fibers, different bioplastics, and other high-value products Lastly, additional uses of banana biomass residues are presented, including energy generation and water treatment.

Project description:Blueberry pruning waste (BPw), sourced as residues from agroforestry operations in Chile, was used to produce added-value products, including platform chemicals and materials. BPw fractionation was implemented using biobased solvents (γ-valerolactone, GVL) and pyrolysis (500 °C), yielding solid fractions that are rich in phenols and antioxidants. The liquid fraction was found to be enriched in sugars, acids, and amides. Alongside, filaments and 3D-printed meshes were produced via wet spinning and Direct-Ink-Writing (DIW), respectively. For the latter purpose, BPw was dissolved in an ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([emim][OAc]), and regenerated into lignocellulose filaments with highly aligned nanofibrils (wide-angle X-ray scattering) that simultaneously showed extensibility (wet strain as high as 39%). BPw-derived lignocellulose filaments showed a tenacity (up to 2.3 cN dtex-1) that is comparable to that of rayon fibers and showed low light reflectance (R ES factor <3%). Meanwhile, DIW of the respective gels led to meshes with up to 60% wet stretchability. The LCF and meshes were demonstrated to have reliable performance in marine environments. As a demonstration, we show the prospects of replacing plastic cords and other materials used to restore coral reefs on the coast of Mexico.

Project description:Antimicrobial resistant (AMR) infections are a leading health threat globally. Previous literature has underscored the farm-to-fork continuum as a potential focal point for the emergence and spread of AMR. In the present study, date (Phoenix dactylifera L.) seed oil was investigated for its chemical composition and antimicrobial activity against common foodborne pathogens including Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella enteritidis, Salmonella typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus in vitro, and in ultra-high-temperature (UHT) milk as a food model at storage temperatures of 37 °C (24 h) and 10 °C (7 days). GC-MS analysis of the seed oil revealed 20 compounds, with octadecane (52.2-55.4%) as the major constituent, and the fatty acid analysis revealed 17 fatty acids, with oleic acid (42.3-43.1%) as the main constituent, followed by lauric acid (19.8-20.3%). The antimicrobial activity of date seed oil was determined using the microdilution method. A significant inhibition against gram-negative bacteria was noted in microbiological media and UHT milk, with a log reduction ranging from 4.3 to 6.7 (at 37 °C/24 h) and 5.7 to 7.2 (at 10 °C/7 days), respectively, at oil concentrations ranging between 10 and 15 µl/ml. The oil showed a similar significant inhibitory effect against St. aureus in the microbiological media (2.0-6.0 log reduction), whereas the inhibitory effect against L. monocytogenes was not statistically significant, with a maximum log reduction of 0.64 achieved at a concentration of 10 µl/ml. AFM imaging of the bacteria showed that oil treatment led to morphological changes in the bacteria including the formation of distorted shapes, surface blebs, indentations, stiffness, and swelling. Present findings suggest that date seed oil can be a promising by-product with potential antimicrobial activity and a food preservative.

Project description:A halotolerant fungal isolate Aspergillus tubingensis GR1 was isolated from the man-made solar saltern located at Khambhat, Gujarat, India, and identified using 28S rDNA partial genome sequencing. This isolate was studied for β-galactosidase production under solid state fermentation using wheat bran and deproteinized acid cheese whey. The influence of various agro-industrial wastes, nitrogen source and other growth conditions on β-galactosidase production was investigated using 'one-factor-at-a-time' approach. Among various variables screened along with wheat bran and deproteinized acid cheese whey as major growth substrate, corn steep liquor and MgSO4 were found to be most significant. The optimum concentrations of these significant parameters were determined employing the response surface central composite design, revealing corn steep liquor concentration (2 mL) and magnesium sulphate (50 mg) per 5 g of wheat bran and 20 mL of deproteinized acid cheese whey for highest enzyme production (15,936 U/gds). These results suggest the feasibility of industrial large-scale production of β-galactosidase known to be valuable in whey hydrolysis and removal of galactosyl residue from polysaccharide.
