Project description:Ethiopia indigenous chicken breeds are typically divided into low and high altitude chicken breeds. Firstly, representative city of low altitude such as Awash is an altitude of around 950 meters above sea level and have a climate which is humidity and high temperature with 37℃ between May and June. Secondly, representative city of high altitude such as Addis Ababa is the capital of Ethiopia in eastern Africa and this city is an altitude of over 2,400 meters above sea level and has a climate which is generally comparable with the average annual temperature of around 16℃. These chicken breeds are adapted to the environmental (climate, temperature and altitude) on the city. Moreover, in Awash, chicken breed is more adapted to heat resistance. So we generated RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) data of Ethiopia indigenous chicken breeds such as low altitude chicken breed (adapted heat) and high altitude chicken breed (Non-adapted heat) to compare the gene expression profiling induced by heat stress (HS). Therefore, we identified 13 hub differentially expressed genes (DEGs) using cuffdiff within cufflinks, which validated by real-time quantitative-PCR (qRT-PCR) in Kenya chicken breed for biological and technical validation. These hub DEGs were subjected to pathway enrichment, protein/protein interaction, and the partial correlation coefficient with information theory (PCIT) to determine their involvement in heat stress and immune response. Our findings suggest that not only hub DEGs but also many others DEGs may play a role in heat stress and immune response.

Project description:Campylobacter jejuni is the major cause of acute gastroenteritis in the developed world. It is usually acquired through contaminated poultry as C. jejuni causes a silent asymptomatic infection of the chicken. Pathogens face different sources of stress during its transit through the gut. In this study, we describe the ability of C. jejuni to survive nitrosative stress at very low oxygen levels that reflect those in hypoxic gut environments. Specifically, we here explore an innovative model of signal recognition during colonization. We use a diffusion capsule to feed small, diffusible molecules from chicken caecal matter into a microaerobic C. jejuni culture to study the transcriptomic changes mounted as response to chemical signals present in the chicken gut. We find that in early stages of exposure to the caecal contents (10 min) the dual component colonization regulator, dccR, plays an important yet not fully understood role. Although the caecal material contains cyanide derived from plant sources, we find no role for a truncated globin (encoded by ctb), which has previously been implicated in resistance to this haem ligand.

Project description:The breeding of local chicken is an important source of animal protein and income for the rural populations of Niger, and the improvement of its productivity requires a better knowledge of production practices. Hence, a socio-economic and technical survey was undertaken from July to August 2017 in order to provide necessary information on the practice of family poultry keeping in Niger. For this purpose, two hundred and sixteen (216) producers were interviewed in the different agro-ecological zones of Niger using structured questionnaire. Results from the study revealed that 43.1% of local chicken producers are women. The most production purpose of the chicken in Niger is for selling (38.31%), self-consumption (37.74%) and donation (22.99%). Scavenging is the most dominant feeding system (92.1%). Constraints related to family poultry production as identified by the study are mainly diseases (45%), lack of housing (16%) which favors predation, lack of food (11%) and lack of training (8%). It is clear that the development of the sector necessarily involves strengthening the surveillance of avian diseases, coupled with veterinary monitoring and supervision of producers.

Project description:Cities are major drivers of environmental change at all scales and are especially at risk from the ensuing effects, which include poor air quality, flooding and heat waves. Typically, these issues are studied on a city-by-city basis owing to the spatial complexity of built landscapes, local topography and emission patterns. However, to ensure knowledge sharing and to integrate local-scale processes with regional and global scale modelling initiatives, there is a pressing need for a world-wide database on cities that is suited for environmental studies. In this paper we present a European database that has a particular focus on characterising urbanised landscapes. It has been derived using tools and techniques developed as part of the World Urban Database and Access Portal Tools (WUDAPT) project, which has the goal of acquiring and disseminating climate-relevant information on cities worldwide. The European map is the first major step toward creating a global database on cities that can be integrated with existing topographic and natural land-cover databases to support modelling initiatives.

Project description:Defining the impacts of anthropogenic climate change on biodiversity and species distributions is currently a high priority. Niche models focus primarily on predicted changes in abiotic factors; however, species interactions and adaptive evolution will impact the ability of species to persist in the face of changing climate. Our review focuses on the use of hybrid zones to monitor responses of species to contemporary climate change. Monitoring hybrid zones provides insight into how range boundaries shift in response to climate change by illuminating the combined effects of species interactions and physiological sensitivity. At the same time, the semipermeable nature of species boundaries allows us to document adaptive introgression of alleles associated with response to climate change.
