Project description:The present study performed the proteomic and biological activities of Peruvian Crotalus durissus, an endangered species reported to cause neuro and myotoxic symptoms. Due to the severity of its envenomation and to its geographical location, Peruvian Crotalus durissus is considered of public health importance in Peru. Snakebite treatment depends on rapid administration of appropriate antivenom. In this sense, the recognition of Peruvian Crotalus durissus venom (PCdV) by Brazilian and Peruvian antivenoms was tested. The results of this study increase the scarce knowledge about PCdV composition and demonstrate antivenom recognition of PCdV proteins, indicating a possible efficiency of these antivenoms to treat Peruvian Crotalus durissus accidents
Project description:Most hepatocellular carcinomas in younger patients from Peru arise from non-cirrhotic livers. Histological examination of the non-tumor liver tissues highlights the presence of clear cell foci in a significant fraction of Peruvian patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. We used microarrays to compare gene expression between non-tumor liver tissues with and without clear cell foci and identified ontologies that are distinctively differentially expressed between subsets.
Project description:To understand the molecular basis of distinct pork quality in Chinese indigenous and Western breed, longissimus dorsi samples were collected from three adult Northeastern Indigenous and from three adult Large White. Total RNA was extracted and subjected to porcine Affymetrix Genechip. The study helps to elucidate the genetic mechnism of divergent pork quality and provide the theory basis for selection and genetic improvement of meat quality traits in porcine. Six longissimus dorsi samples were collected from three Northeastern Indigenous and from three Large White. Three Large White were control samples. Total RNA was extracted from each sample.Gene-expression profiling was performed for each RNA sample separately on the GeneChip® Porcine Genome Array at CapitalBio Corporation (Beijing, China).

Project description:Due to its high altitude and extreme climate conditions, the Tibetan plateau is a region vulnerable to the impact of climate changes and anthropogenic perturbation, thus understanding how its microbial communities function may be of high importance. Here, we report a study to profile soil microbial structural genes, which infers functional roles of microbial communities, aiming to explore potential microbial responses to climate changes and anthropogenic perturbation. Using a microarray-based metagenomics tool named GeoChip 4.0, we showed that microbial communities in treatment site were distinct, compared with those in control site, e.g. shrubland vs grassland, grazing site vs ungrazing site, or warmer site vs colder site. Substantial variations were apparent in stress, N and C cycling genes, but they were in line with the functional roles of these genes.
