Complete chloroplast genome sequence of <i>Hedychium coronarium</i>.

Project description:The first complete chloroplast genome of Hedychium coronarium (Zingiberaceae) was reported in this study. The H. coronarium chloroplast genome was 163,949 bp in length and comprised a pair of inverted repeat (IR) regions of 29,780 bp each, a large single-copy (LSC) region of 88,581 bp and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 15,808 bp. It encoded 141 genes, including 87 protein-coding genes (79 PCG species), 46 tRNA genes (28 tRNA species), and eight rRNA genes (four rRNA species). The nucleotide composition was asymmetric (31.68% A, 18.35% C, 17.74% G, 32.23% T) with an overall AT content of 63.92%. Phylogenetic analysis showed that H. coronarium was classified into a monophyletic group within the genus Hedychium in family Zingiberaceae.

Chemical composition, antifungal and insecticidal activities of Hedychium essential oils.

Project description:The antimicrobial properties of essential oils have been documented, and their use as "biocides" is gaining popularity. The aims of this study were to analyze the chemical composition and assess the biological activities of Hedychium essential oils. Oils from 19 Hedychium species and cultivars were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) techniques. The antifungal and insecticidal activities of these oils were tested against Colletotrichum acutatum, C. fragariae, and C. gloeosporioides, and three insects, the azalea lace bug (Stephanitis pyrioides), the yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti), and the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta). Hedychium oils were rich in monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, especially 1,8-cineole (0.1%-42%), linalool (<0.1%-56%), a-pinene (3%-17%), b-pinene (4%-31%), and (E)-nerolidol (0.1%-20%). Hedychium oils had no antifungal effect on C. gloeosporioides, C. fragariae, and C. acutatum, but most Hedychium oils effectively killed azalea lace bugs. The oils also show promise as an adult mosquito repellent, but they would make rather poor larvicides or adulticides for mosquito control. Hedychium oils acted either as a fire ant repellent or attractant, depending on plant genotype and oil concentration.

Cytotoxic Labdane Diterpenes from Hedychium ellipticum Buch.-Ham. ex Sm.

Project description:In order to reveal the constituents and their biological activities, we carried out a phytochemical study on Hedychium ellipticum Buch.-Ham. ex Sm. (Zingiberaceae). Ten labdane diterpenoids (1-10) were isolated from the rhizomes of H. ellipticum for the first time. Their structures were identified on the basis of spectroscopic analyses including two-dimensional NMR and comparison with literature data. All of these compounds were evaluated for their antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and cytotoxicity against KB, MCF7, NCI-H187 and Vero cells. The result showed that compounds 1 and 7 exhibited moderate activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and compounds 4, 6 and 7 displayed remarkable cytotoxic activity. This is the first report on the presence of all compounds in H. ellipticum and the first time that their structure activity relationship has been discussed.
