Project description:Green hydra (Hydra viridissima) harbors endosymbiotic Chlorella and have established a mutual relation. To identify the host hydra genes involved in the specific symbiotic relationship, transcriptomes of intact H. viridissima colonized with symbiotic Chlorella strain A99, aposymbiotic H.viridissima and H. viridissima artificially infected with other symbiotic Chlorella were compared by microarray analysis. The results indicated that genes involved in nutrition supply to Chlorella were upregulated in the symbiotic hydra. In addition, it was induced by supply of photosynthates from the symbiont to the host, suggesting cooperative metabolic interaction between the host and the symbiotic algae.

Project description:The ability of chickpea to obtain sufficient nitrogen via its symbiotic relationship with Mesorhizobium ciceri is of critical importance in supporting growth and grain production. A number of factors can affect this symbiotic relationship including abiotic conditions, plant genotype, and disruptions to host signalling/perception networks. In order to support improved nodule formation in chickpea, we investigated how plant genotype and soil nutrient availability affect chickpea nodule formation and nitrogen fixation. Further, using transcriptomic profiling, we sought to identify gene expression patterns that characterize highly nodulated genotypes.
Project description:Whole-genome transcriptome assays were performed with isolated serosa from A. gambiae embryos. These assays identified a large number of genes implicated in the production of the larval cuticle. In D. melanogaster, these genes are activated just once during embryogenesis, during late stages where they are used for the production of the larval cuticle. Evidence is presented that the serosal cells secrete a dedicated serosal cuticle, which protects A. gambiae embryos from desiccation.
