Project description:In this study, the relative effect of consuming five different commercial feeds (Feed B-F) and and frozen fish (control; Feed A) for two months on our selected juvenile Asian seabass (77.3g ± 22.4g) were investigated. The growth performance, the biochemical analysis of their flesh, the histology of their midgut and the transcriptome of their midgut and liver were compared to each other and controls. Our customised agilent microarray platform (GPL17855), were used to investigate the liver transcriptomic expression of the different Groups fed with different Feeds. No differential expression were detected between commerical Feeds (B, C, E and F). A total of 397 differentially expressed transcripts (Foldchange cutoff: -1.5≤ or ≥1.5, Pvalue with FDR (<0.05) were detected between Feed D and control Feed A.

Management Practices Affecting Lesser Mealworm Larvae (<i>Alphitobius diaperinus</i>) Associated Microbial Community in a Broiler House and After Relocating With the Litter Into Pastureland.

Project description:Lesser mealworms are often found infesting production houses used to raise broiler chickens. Previous studies have investigated pathogenic microorganisms associated with the larvae, but a more thorough study relating total microbiome changes due to management procedures and flock rotations was needed. Additionally, there is a question of what microbiota are transferred into the environment when the litter, in which larvae reside, is piled in pastureland for use as fertilizer and where interactions with the soil and other fauna can occur. This study chronicled, by the 16S rRNA sequencing, the bacterial community profile of larvae in a broiler grow-out house synchronizing to when birds were added to and removed from the house over 2.5 years. The profile was found to be relatively constant despite 11 flock rotations and management disruptions, specifically litter cleanout procedures and the addition of new birds or bedding. In contrast, once removed from the controlled broiler house environment and placed into open pastureland, the substantial microbial diversity brought with the larvae showed greater fluctuation in structure with environmental conditions, one of which was rainfall. Surprisingly, these larvae survived at least 19 weeks, so the potential for moving larval-associated microbes into the environment needs further assessment to minimize the risk of relocating foodborne pathogens and also to assess those bacteria-generating metabolites that have benefits to plant growth when using the litter as a fertilizer. The characterization of their microbiome is the first step to investigating the influences of their microbes on the manmade and environmental ecosystems.

Addition of Olive Pomace to Feeding Substrate Affects Growth Performance and Nutritional Value of Mealworm (Tenebrio Molitor L.) Larvae.

Project description:The well-recognized efficiency of Tenebrio molitor larvae to convert low quality organic matter into a nutritionally valuable biomass was exploited to manage solid wastes coming from the olive oil industry, which represent a severe environmental challenge in the Mediterranean area. Three organic pomace-enriched substrates (mixtures middlings/pomace 3:1, 1:1, and 1:3) were assessed, together with 100% organic wheat flour and 100% organic middlings as control feeds. A feeding substrate made up of 25% olive pomace and 75% wheat middlings appeared to be the best compromise between growth performance (larval and pupal weights, survival rate, development time) and nutritional properties of mealworm larvae. In fact, larvae fed the 3:1 feed showed the highest dry matter (DM) yield (38.05%), protein content (47.58% DM), and essential/non-essential amino acids ratio (1.16). Fat content (32.14% DM) and fatty acid composition were not significantly different than those of larvae fed more pomace-enriched feeds.
